I was very impressed with Keith Thompson. He was flexible and accommodating with scheduling, arrived a few minutes early, and did a very good job painting. There was some existing damage to one wall and he pointed it out to me, outlined 2 ways to repair and the pros and cons of each. I went with his suggestion and the room looks fantastic. We'll definitely use him for our painting needs in the future.

I needed a huge mirror removed from a wall, which he did quickly and kept the mess contained. Beyond that, he scraped the glue and did a quick repair of the wall so I could repaint it easily. He did the job quickly and cleaned up the area wonderfully. Fair price, fast work, no mess. Would definitely hire again.

Jeff did a fantastic job. I had several holes in the wall in a bedroom. I really thought I would need to replace the drywall however Jeff came in and fixed all the holes and painted the room. You can't tell there were holes there. Very professional man. Everything was cleaner when he left! I will use him again. I'm so happy with the job he did!

Pedros and helper did a great job for me taking care of some drywall and putting in a new landing pad wood piece under the sink. They also gave me free sealant for another issue. They were friendly, hard working and helpful and good quality work. I will use them again. Thanks Pedros!

Mario and his crew did an absolutely excellent job on our house. We purchased a house in Rocklin that had been a rental for about four years and had a lot of work to be done. One great thing about his work is that he does repair work on the surfaces as well. There were numerous horrible patch jobs from the previous owners that he touched up. Also many areas with damage to walls and corners that he made look like new. His attention to detail is obvious and you can tell that he takes a lot of pride in his work. All at a very reasonable price too! Mario does a great job keeping open communication with his customers. He always made himself available any time we had a question for him, and if he had any question at all about how we wanted some detail taken care of he didn't assume anything but he called us to make sure he took care of it exactly how we wanted it. We will have movers coming in tomorrow. Mario said to let him know when the moving is all done, so he can come and touch up the walls and staircase in case there are any scuff marks and damage from the move, even though we already paid him! I highly recommend Marz Painting Company, and would absolutely use them again. 5 stars!

Todd recently completed a dry rot repair for me on the front of my house. He did a great job and there is no doubt that that part of the house is better protected from the elements than when it was first built. He was extremely thorough, dealt with problems as they arose and kept all costs within his project bid. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Todd again. Roland. 8/4/15

We knew we had a leak in our roof and with the recent rain it quickly got worse. We reached out to Belru and spoke with Maks. He committed to coming to check the roof that same day. In torrential rain and wind Maks without hesitation went up on our roof to not only inspect the roof but repair it on the spot. Then Maks came back a few days later to ensure the sealant he put on the roof was still in place and our attic remained dry. Superior service! We would definitely hire him again.

Economy home repair saved my home from serious damage. I could see the major storm coming and I had a serious leak. I put in a request to Thumbtack and Kris was the only response. It was a small caulking job no one else would take the time with. But he and his crew were on time, efficient, and reasonable. And this morning after raining hard all night there were NO leaks! They cared more about my problem than their profit. Not found in this industry very often. A big Thanks for caring.

Rick did a great job for us in preparation for painting being done by our HOA. He did dryrot repairs, re nailing of siding, caulking, priming, and closing some gaps in trim which may have led to some pest problems if not dealt with. We will call on him again for any handyman work we need in the future.

I contacted Thumbtack looking for a contractor to install some siding along the back of my house where a deck had been removed and I got a quick response from Eddie from ER Builds & Repairs. He came out, gave me a quote and a few days later returned and did a wonderful job! He was on time, quick and very reasonable. The side of the house looks as if no deck had ever been there. I highly recommend Eddie. Eloisa M.

1. Submitted job on Thumbtack on Sunday, 10/28/2018. Vince responded the same day and came to our home to view the fence. He measured the distance fence that needed to be replaced (42 feet) and told me he would provide me with an estimate on Monday, 10/29/2018. 2. On Monday, as promised, Vince submitted his estimate, which was detailed and clear. His price to replace the fence was fair and within our budget, based on what we have paid in the recent past for a similar fence repair in our backyard. The credit card vendor with whom Vince is affiliated made it easy to pay the 10% deposit. 3. On Tuesday, 10/30/2018, Vince contacted us and told us that he and his crew of two guys would be at our home on Thursday morning, 11/1/2018. 4. Right on time Thursday morning, the crew arrived. They tore down the old fence (causing minimal disruption either to our property or the adjoining property. Tear down and sinking of new posts was completed by end of business Thursday. Vince and his crew got to work, were very courteous and professional, and seemed to enjoy the work. 5. Friday morning, 11/2/2018, the same crew returned and installed the boards. They were finished by the mid-afternoon. Everything was clean when they left. The guys left us the extra lumber, Vince came by later to collect payment (again, we could use our credit card and the transaction was seamless and very positive, professional. 6. We are very satisfied customers of Saunders Construction and will retain Vince's and his team's services to stain and protect all of our wood fences in preparation for the winter season. 7. See the before and after pictures and judge for yourselves. 8. Bottom line: Very good experience. We highly recommend Saunders Construction! Great work, guys! Jay Creighton, Sacramento, CA

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

    • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
    • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

    • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
    • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
    • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
