Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

Jose, was one of four landscapers that I contacted. He was the only one to respond within 24 hours. I requested a quote on some weeding and prevention. This rain this month created a jungle in my front yard and my back yard was the Amazon rainforest. Jose called me and said he could stop by the next day and view the property to give me a quote. True to his word he showed up and did the job I requested and the price was reasonable. I am now on his monthly maintenance schedule. He was so friendly and knowledgeable and provided me some tips. I would HIGHLY recommend Jose and Ecogreen Landscaping. Try him! You will see.

This company is awesome. They came out gave me an estimate and were able to start the next day. They did such a good job I had them do more work around the house. After it was all done they completed concrete, turf, rock, gates and a wooden fence. They made sure everything was done right and fixed any issues to make sure we were happy. Will definitely use again in the future for any landscape needs. Thanks for making our yard amazing!

Awesome, Outstanding and Superb! - That’s how I would describe Rock, Turf & Landscape. Gus is professional, knowledgeable, patient, and all around terrific guy! I had him do a section of my garden and I was so thrilled, that I asked him to do the other 3/4, including the front, side and part of the back. I couldn’t be more pleased! The garden looks so fantastic that I find myself admiring it many times throughout the day! He truly has an artistic eye for selecting and arranging plants!

I am very pleased with the work George and his crew completed last week. I wanted to replace my dying lawn and two brazilian pepper trees with a landscape that conserves water yet it still has some green in it. We were able to keep most of the existing plants and added some more. George offered great suggestions regarding the outline of the yard and the choices of materials. He took the time to share his plans with me and made sure I was happy with the choices. He and his crew worked for several days to complete the work. They left the yard clean and beautiful. I was so pleased that I hired him to do my backyard.

We had nothing but a great experience working with George and his crew. First, with what we had in mind for our project, he had fantastic suggestions that we went along with, and he was flexible and detailed at the same time. He was also upfront with all the costs and estimated timeframe. When his crew got to work, they were nothing but professional and courteous, on time every day. At every step of the project, George’s communication was great as he kept us appraised of any setbacks and any changes that needed to be made. After it was all done, it came out better then we had expected. He even came back a few times to fix and adjust some things that needed it. I highly recommend you at least consult with them before you decided who you chose for your landscaping project.

Within the course of 8-9 months, I had two local gardeners flake out on me despite paying them up front each month. The work became more shoddy as time went on, until each just stopped showing up. My yard took on a shoddy appearance (a big no-no in an HOA), and then my sprinklers started having problems in August right after the last gardener left and the yard took a turn for the worse. I found Coy Land Techs on the Thumbtack app and reached out to them after reading their reviews. Matt responded the same day and arranged to come by and give an estimate, and he was honest, knowledgeable, and thorough with the information and breakdown of service; this entailed a multilayer approach to bringing the lawn back and cleaning up the landscaping. The crew worked for hours and after that first day, the yard was already looking tip top! My mom said “it was the best money we could have spent!” We are about 3 weeks past the sprinkler repair, aeration, fertilization, and reseeding of the lawn, and following Matt’s aggressive watering schedule, the lawn is successfully springing back to life. Coy Land Techs have done an amazing job, and I look forward to their monthly maintenance because I know my yard is in competent hands.

Awesome!!! Integrity, Professionalism, and Quality. I reached out to Dave Gomez (DG Construction) to inquire about re-doing my backyard landscaping due to "letting it go" like many of us during the drought season. Dave responded to my request the same day to discuss my project. He communicated very professionally and was pleasant to speak with. He was very honest with me in conveying that due to his current workload, he unfortunately wouldn't be able to get to me for 4-6 weeks. He did, however, offer a reference to another contactor and was willing to personally get involved to provide oversight even though he was not getting paid to do so. This is unheard of in this day and age! In any event, when that reference fell through (too busy), he made it a personal goal to fit me into his schedule. Within two days, he came to my home, evaluated my needs, and provided me with a quote. He even offered me a Military Discount (Marine Veteran). Once agreed upon, he dispatched his team to my home and within 1 WEEK, transformed by backyard from a dead oasis to a beautiful, park like setting where my family could enjoy and relax (See Photos). During the process, his entire team was VERY CLEAN and orderly and made it a point to check in to ensure they were not disturbing the household in any way. Part of Dave's motivation to help me out was that I am a former U.S. Marine and have a special needs child that can really benefit from the peaceful setting he's creating for us in our backyard. He took this to heart and made sure to meet his commitments every step of the way. His customer satisfaction was legendary in that he welcomed various changes to the project as they came along (from my wife and I) and wasn't too concerned about "penny pinching". To quote his words, "My focus is delivering an experience to build lifetime customers and witnessing the positive outcome with them when doing so." I have to say that Dave has earned my business and respect moving forward and I would highly recommend him. There are very few contractors out there like him.....so get him while you can! :)
