Antonio did a great job repairing my fence. He was easy to schedule with and was very accommodating. He quoted me parts and labor up front, so there were no surprises at the end. He arrived on time, offered some suggestions, confirmed what I wanted done, took quick measurements, and was off to Home Depot for supplies. He repaired the fallen, rickety fence in about 2 hours, and I'm perfectly satisfied with the work he did. Super nice guy, easy to work with, and I'd totally use him again!

While some contractors like to be diligent and safe without providing an initial quote, Sean was very confident in the picture I provided and in the work needed to help me fix my problem. He and I went back and forth on texts and emails to iron out details but at the end of the day his quote was spot on regarding labor. He knew exactly what type of material to purchase before his first and only visit. Upon first meet, he was very professional. He took the time to assess the situation, prep his work area, and got started as soon as possible. My wife really likes the way it turned out and is very satisfied with the effort Sean put in toward his work. Will be reaching out to Sean for other "handyman" requests. See pics for before, during, and after.

Dominic is very PATIENT and POLITE, prompt responses and helpful professional quotes, considering the customer`s budget more than his own profit. I`m very happy with the price and quality and will hire him every time I have such an impossible job to do like this one that his assistant Donnie (Edoc) did in installing an electric vehicle charger 240V (EVSE) with a very long and impassable route to the main panel. Edoc is also very PUNCTUAL, tidy and fast. The labor and material price for a two-day job was amazingly less than other 6 quotes/offers that I got for the same job on Thumbtack provided that he is a licensed electrician and the others mostly were only handyman. A very good A+ five-star job.Thank you; Pedram

The good: Quality work at a great price. Meticulous attention to detail. Hard worker. Knowledgeable. The bad: Travis and I agreed on a price after he spent about 15-20 minutes looking over the job site. He gave me a quote for labor and we went and I bought the supplies for him. A couple days later when he was supposed to start the job he told me that he had underbid the job and that he needed to charge me more. I told him I didn’t appreciate that and that we had already agreed and shook hands on a price. He agreed that he should honor his word but I ended up meeting him in the middle because I don’t want my contractors to do a bad job or hold a grudge. He also was unable to finish by the agreed upon end date and we had to push what was supposed to be a 7 day job out another 4 days. Travis also underestimated the amount of supplies he needed so I had to purchase more paint and primer for him to finish his job. Despite these setbacks, I would hire Travis again for future jobs. He is a good guy that does great work. He just underestimated his physical condition and his attention to detail causes him to take longer than he thought he needed. These are good qualities. I told Travis that had he quoted me the same all in cost I ended up paying and told me the actual timeframe it took him, I would have hired him and he would have a 5 Star glowing review now. I would recommend him to any other user just make sure he has sufficient time to get the job done and make sure the agreed upon price is non negotiable.

Oscar was fantastic to work with and I am so pleased with the results. He did laminate flooring in my condo and gave me an understanding of the time frame and was able to get it all done in time. He also did my baseboards with no extra charge for labor. He was responsive and prompt with communication. Fantastic experience!

Rob gave me a very reasonable quote to help move several pieces of heavy exercise equipment from a bedroom into the garage of my house. I did not need a crew or a truck or special equipment, and I had already figured out how I wanted the move to go. Rob listened to my plan and fell right in with it. Working together, we were able to get the job done efficiently in a very short time. I was more than happy to pay him what he had quoted as the price for his labor, and I will keep his name on file for the future when I may have need of his services again.

I needed an odd-sized interior door replaced and a front door repaired. Ron delivered exactly what a contractor should. He: 1) estimated at the work, 2) quoted a very competitive price for labor and materials, and 3) did excellent work on time and on budget. Ron will be the first place I look next time I need repairs made.

We hired Gary and his associate to paint, cut and install baseboards in 3 bedrooms. The work performed is EXCELLENT. The work is done with precision and is faultless. We are very pleased. We will be hiring Gary again to do some additional work. We highly recommend Gary. Phone calls were returned promptly. Appointments adhered to and were timely as arranged. Cost of labor very reasonable.

Sergio Flores was fantastic. He came to give me an estimate the same day I called. His bid was very fair and he started the repair to my bamboo flooring the very next day. His crew worked into the night to finish the job in one day. I also asked him to bid on my fence repair and the exterior painting on my home. He is working on my fence today. I like that he bids the labor and material separately. He is easy to communicate with (I don't speak Spanish). I would definitely use him for all of my future projects. I have already referred him to my neighbor for her fence repair. When you find a contractor that can handle various projects, is prompt and honest, I hold on to them. I am willing to share him once he finishes my projects. Mary Malone 760-450-6215

I explained the situation. he gave me a quote. he stuck to his quote. Labor+ parts. Came and fixed the problem. Wife happy. Garden happy. Pipes happy.. Tired of bloated plumbing estimates? I had spent over$300 just for repair estimates alone in a 2 week period. Mr.Lopez answered the call, solved my problems at a reasonable price. Thanks Carlos and Thumbtack.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
