We had 2 guys to help us move a ground floor apartment to a 2 story townhouse and they did the job efficiently and with no damage to the stuff or our places. We had our own box truck, but the guys worked to ensure all the furniture was protected and secure for the drive. We would definitely use JP again and recommend them for anyone looking for helpful movers at a good price!

I had 1 bedroom apartment plus additional queen sized bed and furniture. Overall process was effortless. Brandon offered me with really competitive quote and it was just unbeatable. No hidden charges or anything over quoted price. I specified all the items on project and ended up adding few items after Brandon provided me with quote and yet it was unchanged. My experience was amazing. None of my friends believed movers cost and experience being so great. I would definitely hire safe moving and recommend my friends to use services. Josh and T were really hard working and friendly. Quick to load unload and assemble the furniture back. Great service.

The movers were highly professional and finished moving my 2 bed apartment after 4 hours only. I really liked how they assembled my furniture at the new house. The only thing I disliked is that the manager told me that I will pay a fixed price for the travel fee of 120$ and after the movers were on there way I discovered that I also need to pay for the way from the apt to the new house an additional 50$

=== SUMMARY === I am a software engineer in Silicon Valley living in a one-bedroom apartment. The idea of moving all my packed boxes and large pieces of furniture, like my sofa, entertainment center, and bookcases, was extremely daunting. Do I hire friends to help me move? Do I hire expensive professional movers? Do I do it myself and get one of those PODS? "Ain't nobody got time fo' dat!" Steve and Joe from Albion Moving and Storage were able to move all my items into their truck and to their final destinations safely and quickly. Their truck was extremely large, so even the largest pieces had room to be properly lifted in and carried out. What made me pick Albion Moving and Storage over other competitors at first was their cheaper hourly rate and their 2-hour minimum. Whereas most other moving companies require a 3-hour minimum, these guys only required 2 hours. In my head, I felt the job would only take 2-or-so hours, so this made the most sense. Steve and Joe worked extremely quickly and efficiently, and the job legitimately took 3 hours. And that is great. It would have taken my friends and I all day (possibly two) to do everything these guys did in 3 hours. Steve and Joe are extremely nice and awesome. They made sure they knew where each item was going (new apartment or storage) and got everything to its final destination quickly and with great care. I am for sure going to be calling these guys again next time I need to move. This was my first moving experience living on my own, so I was extremely nervous. These guys put me at ease and have gained my trust. Thanks Steve and Joe! === DETAILS === They disassembled my dining table quickly and efficiently to have it all fit in my storage unit I was moving things to. They also let me purchase a sofa cover for $5 (very cheap compared to what the storage facility I was using charges for them). I actually had two places I needed my stuff moved to: A storage unit and my new apartment. This was no problem for them. They put everything into their large truck, went to the storage unit, put in everything that went there, and then drove to my new apartment, where they moved in all the remaining items. I was afraid this "moving items to two places" thing was going to be a problem, but it was not at all. They disassembled and reassembled my bed for me, which was very nice. They brought their own doorstops, and had all the equipment they needed to move even my heaviest piece of furniture (my entertainment center). They also have their own insurance, which is a very important detail when hiring movers. The whole process with them took 3 hours. I already had all of my stuff in boxes and all the furniture empty and ready to be moved. All they had to do was move things from my apartment to the truck, and then from the truck to the new locations. They were very efficient at putting the furniture into my storage unit. Had I been charged with storing the items inside, I would have done it in such a way where it wouldn't have fit. These guys assured me they could fit everything, and were able to make everything fit perfectly on their first attempt. (No rearranging was needed, they had already planned out what would go where as soon as they saw the storage unit and the space they had to work with.) Definitely will hire again!

Professional moving and handyman company. I hired Harp and his movers when my movers did not show up. They came within 2 hours after responding my call. They moved my 750 pound piano, heavy furniture and sofa bed from 4th floor narrow stairs case to 2nd floor move in place. They also do handyman service. They also mount tvs and hang pictures at my new place. I recomend their service.

Frank Washington came through in a big way. His people were polite and careful with all our belongings. They put these pads on our doorway so that the furniture & house weren't damaged. Frank supplied wardrobe boxes to use & return. His crew were truly what their name says. We had the house all packed up but it took only 3.5 hours to move us from West Sac to Roseville--a three bedroom house. AND, they were half the price than all the other movers I looked at. Great!

Daniel was pleasant and professional to work with. Ours was his second job in the day but he came on time and set realistic expectations of how long the job would last and how much it would cost. We hired two movers and they worked as fast as they could, with the overall job lasting 6 hours. We would have probably been better off with 3 movers as it would have cost around the same as the job would have been quicker.

Keavan was professional, showed-up at the time agreed to, was efficient in the removal of all the misc items to be hauled away (items were hauled away in approximately an hour). Because it is an estimate through Thumbtack, it is understandable that the actual cost may be more. Keavan was upfront about this, so there were no surprises, and was able to provide a more accurate amount once pictures were sent to him. Very satisfied, would hire him again.

This was my first time trying to hire a professional via Thumbtack platform and it was a very good experience. After submiting the request, I received 3 quotes from different movers, and Pavel was one of them. He stood out among the three because of his responsiveness and reasonable price. Before hiring him, I was a bit concerned given that he had only one review before. But Im glad that I decided to hire him. Pavel was very careful with my stuffs, especially my computer (they also provided a small blanket to cover my table top) He was flexible as well when I asked him if he could stop by Ikea and Living Spaces store for me to pick up some furniture. Overall, I give Pavel and his crew 5 stars for their professionalism. I'll definitely contact him again for future move

Had a impressive experience with My Move. First, the sales Rep. Richard is very responsive and responsible. His quote is fair and reasonable, lower than many other movers. For moving your stuff, you don't want to go for the extremely low quote as some of your personal memories simply cannot be replaced. Richard also went beyond and forward to respond my follow-up emails during and after the move. It's quite nice to have him acting as a "case manager", I appreciate this personal touch. Their moving team is also efficient and detail-oriented. They disassemble and assemble our furnitures with care. The moving went pleasant and smoothly. No water damage, no boxes broke. Totally 5 star!

This was the first time using Thumbtack and MP Movers delivered far beyond what I expected. They were professional and had all of the tools needed to complete the job. Communication was great and they were proactive in making sure that everyone was on the same page. I specially liked that they were prepared to take payment through credit card. I would absolutely hire MP Movers again.

We had to pick up some really heavy furniture (Bed-Set) from Modesto and get it to Tracy. Gary contacted me through Thumbstack and gave a quote which was agreeable given his legitimate track record. We met at the gate of the Seller exactly at 8:30 Gary came in with James 5 min prior to me reaching the venue. They went about carefully analyzing the furniture and then taking them apart wrapping them with shrink-wrap and blankets. It took around 3 hrs to get this done and another hr to reach my place but this is where the fun started, the furniture was not just heavy but also kind of cu-to-cut with the space available to take it upstairs. Gary made some really accurate calculations and using his expertise got everything up without any kind of damage to the wall nor the furniture. This process was another 2 hrs with installation. So in all from 8:30 by the time we got done it was almost 3:10. But the best part is Gary stuck to his original estimate and did not charge even a single penny more. Above all he and his team were cautious and friendly in their approach. So if anyone wants a legit heavy movers Gary is the best choice.

Pat was great! We requested his services last minute because of issues with the moving company we had booked, and others we had looked into. Despite high ratings on Yelp, these companies had questionable practices that manifested as the moving date got closer, and further research revealed low ratings on BBB and noteworthy complaints. Unlike these companies, Pat was very transparent and very responsive. It only took an hour or two after our initial phone call for him to provide us with the requested information and a draft of the contract, which helped with our initial reservations of him as an independent mover. He even included a detailed checklist of items to be transported, and easily provided references when we inquired about where else we could find more information about his services. The references spoke of him very highly and warmly! He hired help on both ends of the move-- both nice, hardworking guys who went straight to work. Pat made sure our furniture and miscellaneous items were packed well in the trailer. Things went smoothly, and we are so happy to have found him! We were comfortable with him throughout the whole process. His rate was also the lowest among all the movers we had checked out, which seems to reflect the honesty of his work.

Of course it's easy to find cheap movers, but All in Moving Systems went beyond cheap moving for me. I can't tell you how many times I've had terrible movers. These guys were hands down the best and I couldn't ask for a better mover, period. After getting ripped off by big companies too many times I decided to go with a small company. This company is proof that small businesses are the best type of businesses that you can buy from. They moved everything from my old place to my new place and didn't scratch the walls, didn't scratch the hardwood floors, didn't dirty the carpets, and didn't leave a mess.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
