MVP was hired to replace our water heater with a tankless outdoor unit, install hookups in my kitchen for a dishwasher, replumb our supply lines, and replace a leaky sewage line underneath the bathroom. They gave us a competitive price, showed up on time, and got the work done in one day. Nice guys who do good work.

If you need electrical work done, get in touch with PKS Electric. Paul's work was excellent. We had three pendant spots in the kitchen - two had stopped working and it wasn't a bulb issue. Paul arrived, checked out the lights and quickly identified the problem. I had purchased replacement spots just in case the old lights were not repairable. So Paul then removed the old lights and quickly had our new replacements installed and working beautifully. And he cleared up the rubbish into a box too. Definitely recommend him for any electrical work you need done around the house. I'll be happy to use his services again. Thanks Paul for the 5 Star job and giving us light in the kitchen again. :-)

Jeff was prompt, eager to work, and did a beautiful job repairing a broken island in a new kitchen. He also installed crown molding for a realistic price throughout the dining and living room. He worked with my budget to schedule several more projects, and I'm really looking forward to see what he can do with these upcoming projects. I would trust him with any friends, coworkers, and even my mom! Will post photos soon.

Sam and his associate came to my house on time. They emptied my garage of over 50 cardboard boxes and installed baby safety mechanisms on all kitchen cupboards. Sam also fixed our broken radio flyer, which wasn't included in the original estimate. They were friendly and competent, so I recommend this company's services.

My wife and I could not be happier! Todd Ellis orchestrated our custom kitchen remodel that was professionally installed with great care and went out of his way to make sure we were completely satisfied. The quotes we got from the bigger companies were totally outrageous not to mention we couldn't find the quality of workmanship that we were searching for. After the first time we sat down with Todd we new right away that he was genuine about making our dream kitchen come to life, afterwards we found ourselves amazed at the simplistic transformation. I'm not a great person to describe each detail that took place, and giving a review is not my forte, so I hope that this little post conveys how much we truly appreciate what Mr. Ellis did for us. 5 stars doesn't quite seem enough for how much integrity and hard work you did to make our dream come true. Thank you so much Todd.

Maks installed two new doors on our house, repaired a wall and some kitchen drawers that were broken. Overall his work was excellent and was a very fair price for the time he spent on the projects. I will definitely ask him to do some additional work on our home in the future.

I recently purchased a home and had numerous remodeling projects. Osbaldo repainted the interior of my house, installed crown molding, installed new bedroom doors, remodeled the bathroom, converted my dryer hookup to gas, remodeled my closets and installed granite and back-splash in the kitchen. Osbaldo is a good, trustworthy person. He is a hard worker and takes the time to make sure the job is done right. He really has a good eye for what looks nice in a home and had great remodeling suggestions. Plus, his prices are very fair. I will definitely be using him again for any more work I need on the house!

Jeff redid the tile in my master bedroom, installed a new tub and fixtures and put tile on the face of the tub. The only thing I wish was different is the width of the "decorative" tile strip. I would have wanted it wider and would have told Jeff if he had asked. Overall, I am extremely happy with the work.

I was impressed with Toni's concern to keep within our budget. Toni completed a whole house remodel that was beyond our dreams. Everything in our home fits our taste, is of high quality and was professionally installed. The changes in our kitchen not only are beautiful, they increased our storage and usability significantly. Paint colors are perfect in every room, the hand scraped maple hardwood is awesome and the carpeting is excellent. God bless you Toni, and thank you for the outstanding job. You truly cared for us from start to finish.

Kurt suggested instead of just doing Cabinet refinishing in the kitchen to do the cabinets throughout the entire home since they were identical throughout and all could use the upgraded look.

My wife and I decided to remodel our kitchen. We were looking for a company/contractor who could do the job. We met with, David Smith. Owner of WDS remodeling. We had some kind of idea what we wanted and a few days later he came back with a layout of our kitchen. The crew, consisting of Elliott and Ryan. They did an outstanding work, and it was a real pleasure to have them in our home. We couldn't be any happier with the work you guys have done. Thank you, David and crew for our brand new kitchen. We love it. I would / will recommend you guys to everyone. Thanks again, James and vicki

Mark is absolutely amazing! I wish all contractors could be like him. He is professional, friendly, very courteous, and his work is beautiful. I hired him to make custom cabinets for the bathrooms and he walked me through each step to customize my design. When he was unable to find a matching color for the countertop, he contacted a company he works with so I could look through pieces of granite and find a match. He installed the cabinets this weekend and the workmanship is beautiful. Solid wood, matching stain, and soft closing drawers. The price is on point as well. I would venture to guess that something of this size would be about the same price at Ikea, or some other cheap furniture place that uses particle board and laminate. I will be using Mark for all my custom woodwork needs - and there will be plenty.

The guys at Etan Remodeling did an excellent job on our recent kitchen remodeling. It’s always hard to find a reliable service company and we are happy we came across this one. Our kitchen was pretty much outdated, and we wanted to find a way to make it look more attractive. We called them, fixed the initial appointment and within a week our project got started. The entire process was as quick and painless as possible. Within a couple of weeks we received a brand new kitchen that is not only beautiful but also more functional than we could imagine. Thanks again for the great job! We are going to recommend your services to everyone we know.

We highly recommend ProBuilt Construction. Brent and his crew are very professional, highly skilled, and provide good value. We had Pro-Built construct a complicated pre-fab barn which we purchased from another vendor. Unfortunately, the vendor had no experience with our design, so there were numerous issues with the design/supplier. Brent was able to engineer fixes and he provided us with a product far superior than designed at a great value. Brent and his crew are an absolute pleasure to work with. You will not be disappointed in choosing this excellent company.

The project involved converting the lowest level of a tri-level home to a separate living quarters for my daughter. The bedroom, bathroom and utility room were left intact. The primary effort consisted of: closing off the open space between the main kitchen eating area and the large family room; providing a separate entrance to the family room; replacing an 8 foot window with a sliding door, landing, and steps from the eating nook; removing a wet bar, and adding a kitchenette in the family room. The kitchenette required installing: cabinets; appliances; electrical and plumbing; lighting fixtures; quartz counters; tile flooring. George Smith, owner of BMT Builders, was an integral partner of the design process, which included the home owners and a Kitchen Design specialist. George's expert experience in this process resulted in many practical improvements to the design and physical layout of the kitchen. He provided the detailed plans for the permit, and advocated for the home owners interests with the county personnel- which was critical in obtaining approval of the project. The care and dedication to the job which George and his assistants provided were commendable, they worked exclusively on this project until it was completed. The craftsmanship of the finished product adequately reflected George's perfectionist nature. His integrity was above reproach; his word was as good as gold in all aspects of this project. There were many unforeseen obstacles encountered during the project; George always provided the owner with a menu of options, explanation of the choices, and any cost ramifications. He included any suggestions offered by the owner in his recommended solution. His suggested approach was both pragmatic and artistic; but, always focused on getting the effort done the correct way- never cutting corners. As with any project of this complexity, some surprises arose; the most significant one involving relatively new code issues, which were not included in the initial plans. The electrical wiring for the new appliances and kitchen outlets originally were planned using the existing 200 amp panel. At the initial site inspection, the county agent informed us of additional code requirements that would necessitate installing a new main panel and running new electrical circuits from this panel to the new kitchenette. This change in approach had a modest impact on the schedule and cost of the project. In retrospect, this could have been mitigated by more detailed review during the permit process.

Hired hi, for a new kitchen floor. He was punctual, very knowledgeable and patient until i decided type of floor, and reviewed details with me. Guided me in the right direction. They did a great job. They discovered that part of the subfloor was water damaged and gave me a huge discount to fix it. Subsequently, they also protected the rest of the subfloor to make sure there would be no future water damage. The job was done on time and looks great! Thanks Guys!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.
