We were very impressed with Raquel and her training. We were at our wits end with our 8 month old lab Molly. Despite her having attended 2 group dog training courses at our local pet store, she was out of control. She had taken over our household and was creating discord by her bad behavior for all who reside here, including our 6 year old lab and our cat. Raquel worked with our family, gave us knowledge and skills on how to work with Molly to regain control of our home. Her training encompassed the whole family as we all had our own way of dealing with Molly's behavior. Molly was truly a different dog at the end of our intensive training. We know we still have much work to do but we are encouraged that we now have the skill to continue and the support and encouragement from Raquel.

Karen is amazing - she is attentive, informative, and very considerate of the concerns I have as a pet owner. She introduced training tactics to me that will help me establish a respectful relationship with my dog. It's training that is beneficial for both me and my dog. I can't wait to continue the working relationship with her and Abby!

John is very good at training my Border Collie to be more calm and socialized with other dogs. My dog also becomes more obedient. John is very patient with my dog when he received him for boarding and training for 10 days.

Denise was great with my German Shepard name Misty. When I started with her Misty was jumping and pulling me where I could not control her. After two months I was able to train with her in 4 Paws for Patriots. She is now a certified service dog. We would not have been able to complete that task without her training. Vance Myers

After reading the numerous positive reviews on Cassidy and her training techniques I felt confident. From the very beginning Cassidy was friendly, helpful, and attentive. She consistently took a personal interest in my dog, Simba. Simba's needs were extensive as he needed socialization as well as obedience. Simba is a one year old 80 pound pit bull mastif mix with tons of energy and strength. After several email exchanges we decided to speak in more detail on the phone. Cassidy listened carefully to all of my concerns and background stories about my dog. Without judgement she gave me perspectives that might be contributing to some of my dog's behaviors. I appreciated not being "scolded" for making the situation worse, and instead she comforted me by saying things like I can see why you would have thought that. This allowed me freedom to share openly about making the mistakes I may have created by being over protective and even possibly over-bearing. On our first meeting Cassidy arrived ready to take on any situation she was faced with. I explained to her that my dog had not met many new people. She calmly walked me through the steps on how to have a new person enter the house. I followed her steps and was amazed at how fast my dog was able to connect with her. Her calm demeanor throughout the entire session kept us at ease as she was able to show us a variety of techniques for each of the training components. I couldn't believe how relaxed my dog was as he laid down at her feet and stared at her as she spoke with him. I knew when she left she had already made a substantial difference. My dog was asleep shortly after her departure and remained in a deep sleep the entire night. Today I already see improvements. A few days later Simba was able to attend Camp Cassidy. I was a nervous at first just knowing he was out of my care. However Cassidy continued to send updates via text, phone, photos, and even videos. She was thorough and always made time to talk me through any of my concerns. Cassidy continues to be in touch and she offers continued support for our dog. I am grateful to have met someone with such a great heart and a true passion for what she does. Since leaving camp cassidy my dog has been neutered, and he will be ready for additional training. I look forward to working with Cassidy in the future. I woud highly recommend Cassidy to anyone who needs special assistance with their dog.

Stefanie has trained 4 of my dogs over more than 10 years and I cannot sing her praises enough! She has true compassion for all animals and has rescued and found homes for countless number of dogs. She has a real gift of "talking" to the dogs -- she can read their personalities and they bond with her. She is experienced, professional, strict but kind and understands all breeds -- purebreds and mixed. She assesses the situation, background, needs, etc. of the owner/s as well as the dog and adjusts her training method accordingly. Above and beyond her dog training skills, Stefanie is a warm, principled, caring person. I consider her a friend as much as my dogs' trainer.

I wanted to let you know how valuable the beginners obedience training was for my Airedale, Toby, and me. Tobey is 15 months old and before I brought her to you, she was out of control. I’m not sure I was ready to admit that when we started but I soon realized it was true. After just one week the difference in her was remarkable. After six weeks, she was like a new dog. She can now be controlled and no longer has the bad habits I thought were just "being a puppy". I have learned what you already know, that it is easier to train Tobey than it is to train me! Thanks again for a wonderful experience and if you ever need a reference, please don’t hesitate to call me.

Love Ur K9 saved our relationship with our puppy. Our dog went through two trainers and destroyed an endless array of items in our house when we finally found Kevin and Love Ur K9. After training with Kevin, our dog is like a whole new pet - still playful and lovely, but obedient and a joy to have in the house.

Dave was such a great help to us in training our dog (or us, really)! He really took the time to explain the process and work with Sadie to overcome her fearful reaction to other dogs. She's made great progress & we look forward to more training sessions in the future. Highly recommended! Oh, and Sadie absolutely LOVES HIM.

Alison was always a pleasure to have come to the house. Our dog Sonny just loved Alison. She helped us to teach Sonny basic obedience and he learned quite fast. She accommodated our schedules and was very flexible. She came to our home to work with Sonny twice a week. for 10 weeks. By the second week Sonny could follow commands pretty well. She gave us good advice on what kind of leach would help us because he would pull while walking. From the beginning, we could see a difference in Sonny's behavior and how well he would listen. We are very happy with the training Alison provided to Sonny and the tips she would give us on how to get him to do the things we wanted him to do. We will be calling on Alison again in the near future to assist us with future training. It was a wonderful experience and we are very happy and satisfied with the training we all received. We are so grateful for finding Dogwood K9 Training Experience and working with Ron. Our rescue dog, Jackson, was a stray with no prior training and some behavioral issues that we couldn’t address on our own. Jackson had human aggression towards males, did not listen to commands, jumped on furniture, nipping, chasing our cats, incessant barking, anxiety, the list goes on. By working with Ron we have learned how to address all of these issues through behavior modification training. The best part of working with Ron is that he makes it fun for the dog by using games as a primary means of training. Jackson loves going to Ron’s classes and surprisingly isn’t aggressive towards him in any way, probably due to Ron’s sweet and caring nature towards dogs that Jackson can sense. Ron’s training method starts with the basics and then we build upon the foundation using baby steps so that the dog progressively works up the full commands, while truly understanding them. Our dog’s behavior has done a 180 since we started training and he shows respect for us now. This is after a different trainer told us we should probably take our dog to the shelter because he is going to be too hard train (a lost cause, as they say). Ron’s ultra-positive attitude towards Jackson helped us see that although he is not a perfect dog, he is the perfect dog for us. Ron is a truly exceptional dog trainer. Don’t expect magic; it takes hard work to counter-condition a dog with bad habits like Jackson, but Ron’s expertise will equip you with all of the tools that you need to work with your dog. What I like about the classes is that Ron is training ME to work with my dog so that I can continue to use his tactics long after our classes end. Through his guidance I am creating a long-lasting bond with my dog based on respect, but mostly based on FUN! We love Dogwood!

This review is long overdue. We worked with Dave a few months back and he is fantastic! My husband and I have a 19month old Goldendoodle who has had previous training, puppy training through Petsmart and Petco but none of it compared to the training we received from Dave. He is great at what he does and explains things in a way that make total sense, like why didn't I think of this before?! He uses positive reinforcement training, which was huge for us. Dave works with your schedule and is flexible, he emails you after every session to go over what you've learned and how to continue the training when he's not around. We see a total difference in our dog after having sessions with Dave, we are looking forward to having him back in the near future to continue our training!

Jessie is knowledgeable and reliable about walking dogs. She has some training experience. My dog is very leash reactive and I'm not totally comfortable letting him go with someone without my supervision. Jessie was willing to let me do that. For now, I've postponed dog walking, but not because of Walk'n Wag'n. They seem to be a reliable and professional company. I would recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
