Several small fix jobs; leaking outside faucet, wood gate repair, outside light fixture. Kenny arrived on time and did all the requested repairs. Will definitely hire him again. Reasonable pricing.

Tom's exceptional cabinetry was what I needed to satisfy my very demanding clients. The result is a kitchen that does justice to their restored 100 year old Craftsman home in South Pasadena.

Mike Lindsey is a superb craftsman, a hard worker, and a good guy. I couldn't recommend a carpenter more highly. We needed a fence built to replace our old one that had been damaged by a hit and run driver. We had several "fence builders" come out to talk about the job and give us an estimate. They never even called back. The excuses went on: the job was too complicated; it would entail a finish carpenter that the company didn't have; they couldn't take on the job at the time. I almost gave up, then thought to search for a carpenter instead of a fence builder. That's how we found Mike. He worked with us to create exactly what we envisioned and offered suggestions that greatly improved the look and quality of the fence. His approach and pricing strove to make the job as fair as possible for himself, for his workers, and for us. He found us the best wood possible. The skill he has shown and the care he has taken in building the fence and swinging, saloon-style gate are remarkable. At last, we will a magnificent fence that will last for years. Soon, I'll be posting photos of the finished fence and gate.

Ryan is a perfectionist. When it came to the designing of my custom entertainment center, I told him what I wanted and heade sure that it wasn't anything short of stellar. He takes his woodworking very seriously and you could see it in the quality of his work. I have no doubt that this entertainment center will stand the test of time and look good for many years to come. Highly recommend Ryan for any woodworking project.

My boss has a beautiful hardwood coffee table that she was considering getting rid of. However, we decided to turn it into a dining table and wanted to add some height to the legs, instead. I went on a search for a woodworker and Anthony was the first person to message me. He kept me up-to-date with the progress of his work and was so good at coordinating times and pricing. He picked up and dropped off the table to us, and did an amazing job on the legs! The paintwork and leg extensions were beyond what we even expected. We're so happy with the final product, and happier we chose Anthony for this job. I highly recommend him if you're looking for someone professional, punctual, and absolutely knows what they are doing. THANK YOU ANTHONY!

This guy is a real artist. He took an antique dresser a previous owner had installed as a bathroom vanity without drawers or protection of the wood and added 8 custom drawers and inlaid glass tile on the top including a beautiful backsplash in addition to refinishing the vanity. I can't imagine this vanity could look any better, and I am so happy I opted to repair it rather than replace it. It is now truly one of a kind. Jim is a perfectionist who did not give up when pieces of the vanity fell apart; he simply added new pieces that appear to have been there forever. If you want something wooden of value created or repaired, seriously, talk to Jim White. You will be amazed. I would love to attach the before an after pics but if you email him I am sure he will send you some as well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
