I hired for hair during my wedding & my bridesmaids were very satisfied with the way their hair turned out. I was so happy that the stylist arrived on time & they were ready to work. They were very sweet. The only issue was that after they were finished they asked for a 15% gratuity per person after I had already signed a contract stating that the service was paid in full & that the company was to distribute money to the stylists. According to the contract everything was included AND it stated in the contract that I was not to give the stylist money. It was awkward to have the stylist upset with me & demanding money. I asked her to call her company b/c I had already paid in full according to the contract for their gas, time, & styling. It was resolved but it was awkward! I'm still very happy with the final product :)

Orene is really fun to work with and made me feel at ease. I've always wanted to find the right professional to help me look and feel my best and Orene is the perfect fit for me! Her preparation and the forms she used to help me, made our time efficient. She is extremely knowledgeable about fashion, and used her tools to help me define a personal style goal, and train my eye to see what flatters my figure. We went through my closet and got rid of out of date and ill fitting items and she made a shopping list and put together outfits that I would never have thought of. Everything we worked on was organized into a binder that I can look back on and add to. I have already booked another session to go shopping with her and am really excited that Orene is helping me to achieve my goal!

Eric has been great to work with. I appreciate his systematic, and detail oriented approach, and his easy-going attitude. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of clothing and all things fashion, all the way from history to manufacture to style. He also is incredibly familiar with sources of high quality, high value clothing, and more than pays for himself on that aspect alone. I'm still in the process of updating my wardrobe, but it has already improved substantially. Eric has been very responsive and flexible both in terms of timing and in terms of approach. Based on my experiences with Eric so far, it feels more like a friend that I can get amazing style/clothing advice from than a paid consultant.

Shelley Golden is not only talented as a stylist but a delight too! On our shopping outing, her eye for colors and putting together outfits was spot on! Her suggestions gave me a fresh perspective from other stylists I've worked with in the past. Shelley brings in her unique experiences with textiles, her varied background as a stylist and world traveler living abroad. I highly recommend Shelley for any woman or man who's wanting to be seen in an updated way from the same old, same old.

I found Emilie on the website Keaton Row. I needed the help of a stylist but couldn't find anyone local. Most of the stylists on KR where either too young or had a style that was not suitable for Southern Cal hot weather. She has been a tremendous help to me, and has been super patient. I'm only 5' and not a size 2, but she has really been able to find items I could not have found after hours of searching. She has gone above and beyond what I expected from an 'online stylist'. Emilie has also been teaching me the 'basics' of how to put an outfit together when I told her I didn't have a clue :). I wish I lived closer to her so I could hire her for a full wardrobe consult. I am very pleased with Emilie's services and hope to continue working with her.

Sana is a pleasure to work with and her photography is on point. Working with her feels like you're just hanging out with a friend because she keeps every situation at ease and comfortable. I was very impressed with the final images, her impromptu creativity on the spot and collaborative process. Needless to say, she gets the job done and I look forward to hiring her again for portrait, product and fashion photography.

Brandi really listened to my needs when I was talking about my body challenges and style wants. And what was most amazing-- she executed! I have loved all the pieces she's gotten me. Not only has she gotten things that work for my body type and my lifestyle, but she's also consistently picked things that stayed true to my personality. How amazing is that! Truly she is more than a stylist. She will bring out your best and help you put your best foot forward.

Working with Nicole was a dream. I would highly recommend her as a personal stylist and plan to work with her again soon. // A bit of backstory: I'm a 5'7" slender (size 2) woman in San Francisco in her late 20s. And shopping stresses me out - too many choices, not enough guidance, and I don't want to spend the time reading through Cosmopolitan, Elle etc to figure out what style works and what doesn't. Because of the above, I've worked with a personal stylist before when I lived in New York. I walked away with many nice and expensive 'classic' pieces from Bloomingdale's, none of which really fit my style and none of which I wear today. I look at that experience as a waste. I felt very nervous trying this again, but knew I needed to give it a go. My goal was to finally nail a capsule wardrobe so that I wouldn't have to think about each individual piece anymore -- without spending hours of my life on research -- so that I could just feel comfortable and confident in my look. // Working with Nicole Nicole is very down-to-earth and very approachable. In our first phone call, she asked about my goals, my body type, my favorite stores and more. She then put together a Pinterest board and sent it over to me. And here is the PERFECT example of why I'm SO glad I worked with a personal stylist in the first place... Because I looked at the Pinterest board and thought, "Oh, how dull... these pieces are so basic and too loose to accentuate my figure." But then my boyfriend (a visual designer) took a look and said, "Actually, the length of this top would accentuate your torso," and "The cropped length of these pants would make you look taller," and "The draped look makes you appear slimmer than a tight one" and so on and so forth, enlightening me to all the fundamental principles of style that Nicole had subtly understood and applied to fit my body, that I never would have picked out for myself. With that I was sold. // Once in the Mall I love the styles in Aritzia, but the last time I went to their two story store I spent three hours but walked out empty-handed and deeply frustrated. Nothing I had picked out actually worked on my body, and I felt at once helpless and somewhat pathetic at spending all that time, trying on all those pieces, and not being able to land at something that worked for my look. With Nicole, I tried Aritzia again. She had pulled out several pieces all waiting for me when I walked in -- and they all fit like a glove and were exactly what I was looking for: chic, comfortable, casual, yet polished and with a touch of class. I was so excited at finally having found the pieces that could be a base for my wardrobe that I insisted on going through the store again together, in case we had missed something that might work just as well; and found nothing. She had picked out exactly what worked for my body type, exactly what worked for my style, and I wish I had trusted her eye and thoroughness from the beginning! // In Sum If you're looking to nail your wardrobe once and for all, and not have to spend hours stressing about it, buying pieces that you ultimately return, and just love what you wear without thinking about it, then work with Nicole. Just do it. You won't regret it and you'll have hours of your life back and compliments (and confidence) galore. Thank you, Nicole, and look forward to working together again soon.

I saw great reviews from Gabby and figured she would be a reliable fashion designer who could work with both my need to find personally stylish looks that suited my frame, while adhering to a tight budget - Gabby did not come close to disappointing. Gabby was very responsive, friendly, and downright awesome from the get go and worked with my schedule and budget to ensure I got the best experience possible. I requested 4 simple things: 1. Learn how to better dress myself and find what's fashionable 2. Completely revamp my wardrobe with multi-versatile clothing that will last for years 3. Adhere to a tight budget 4. Have an amazing shopping experience Let's just say everything was checked off that list. Within 4 hours, we were able to put together a whole new look that has most definitely transformed the way I look and feel, gather a clothing set that is comfy, durable, and versatile, as well as secure my spot as that sexy new guy on the university campus. All seriousness aside though, Gabby is a compelling wardrobe consultant that deserved nothing less than a grandeur rating of outstanding.

I was impressed by Jodie when I visited the store. We clicked right of way because of our same taste of fashion and color. Her friendly professional advice made me felt like talking to one of my best friend or sister. I have been wearing the clothes that I bought from her, each time I feel like walking in style!

My time is limited and spending hours scouring stores for “that dress” seemed a daunting and distasteful task. Jessica was not only helpful in identifying my style but was able to locate the perfect gown plus accessories that reflected my taste. It was perfect. Working with someone of Ms. Barr’s caliber is exactly what one wants in a professional stylist. I highly recommend her service, you will be delighted.

One word - fantastic. Marion did a closet "clean-up" and showed me how to put together different outfits. She created ensembles with my existing clothes, jewelry and shoes and took pictures. Not only did she create awesome compilations but she was a blast to work with. She has a knack for style. She also took me shopping and picked out a full line-up of adorable things. On top of this, she is funny, down-to-earth, and honest. What more could anyone want from a stylist?

We had the opportunity to first meet Leslie when she was styling a photoshoot and came to us for clothing. She was the ultimate in professionalism and style. Since then we have worked with her on many occasions both as a stylist and as a designer. We look forward to the next opportunity to work with her.

A++ ~ Would totally hire again! Jessie is an amazing closet cleanser / fashion advisor! After a year of personal shopping she did for me through an online service I asked if I could get help with a closet cleanse / consult. She was a blast to hang with and go through my closet with, we were laughing the whole time while choosing tons of old clothes to get rid of that didn't really fit my life anymore and I came away with a much better sense of the stuff I was missing the whole time.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

      What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

      What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

      What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.
