Scott was great to work with, he gave me suggestions that helped me to decide just what I wanted done. Scott is a hands on contractor and did most of the work himself. He drove to a previous job site so I could visually see what I was getting. I decided on a diamond pattern with broom brush in in different directions and a boarder around the edge of the driveway. The effect was assume, by using this pattern it gave the driveway the look of using different shades of concrete(no color was used). this is by far the best looking driveway in the neighborhood. his workmanship added many more dollars in value to my home. thank-you Scott. Dan Ross a happy home owner.

We hired Excel Construction (Eyal) to completely remodeling our kitchen and to design and build a large wet bar. The remodeling job that they did included the demolition of the existing spaces, the removal of several existing walls, rewiring of some electrical outlets and switches, re-plumbing the new spaces, remove and install new flooring, new upper and lower cabinets, install new marble countertops, installing new lighting fixtures, fresh interior paint, some drywall repairs and adding a new large island at the kitchen. Eyal and his working crew did a stunning remodeling job. Eyal create for us a complete design of the work based on what we wanted and needed, guided us through some space limitations of the house and presented to us some different ideas that met our needs. The remodeling job was delivered on time, within budget and with high quality. Eyal was at the house every day and made sure that the remodeling progress is on track. He was there for each and every step of the work, which was extremely important to us. We highly recommend them for anyone who is searching for high quality remodeling or construction work.

Extremely professional, reliable, personable, intelligent, and punctual. I have dealt with many contractors before, and I can say with confidence that John was the absolute best. Not only does John do the job right, but he develops a relationship that extends beyond the job itself. If you want the job done right the first time, hire John.

Oscar was amazing and went above and beyond to get the fridge installed. He had to move an outlet that was not properly placed by my contractor. Made a trip to Home Depot and stayed longer to get it done. I highly recommend him!

Joey was very understanding of the small job/low budget where other contractors were quoting 2-3x. He had one of his men, Milan, come and install cork underlay with click hardwood. Initially I was quoted $350, but it became $400 upon arrival - not a big deal, but something to consider if you’re shoestring and ran out of money on a build as I did. Milan did a pretty great job overall, very friendly and speedy. In this circumstance precision near the walls didn’t concern me as I built floor to ceiling acoustic panels, however I was a bit concerned about the lack of spacers and some not so “straight” cuts. Also, there was a misunderstanding regarding the threshold and the point the floor was to be brought up to. Luckily, after some schedule conflict, Joey was able to get him back out to correct the mistake. Overall the floor looks great, feel solid thus far, no bowing or splits, so I think it’ll hold up. The floor style itself looks spectacular. Overall I’d give them a B+

Channing was prompt, personable, and knowledgeable. I hired him to replace door hinges, which he did swiftly and carefully, and he even repaired a couple of places where I had damaged the wood. He knows a lot about all kinds of construction, and I would definitely recommend him.

I originally used Haggerty Construction a few yer ago for improvements to my rental properties. The crews always showed up on time. And were always professional. They finished on or ahead of schedule and were always able to work within my budget. Because of this I decided to use them for a small but high end bathroom in my own home. My wife and I were very pleased with the outcome. Haggerty Construction is the only contractor I will use for all my Construction needs.

I had a GREAT experience with Daniel from World Class Construction! I did not know him before, but he is now my "go to " guy. I had a smaller but very difficult job with some drainage issues and he came up with good suggestions on a repair and his cost and service were great. Also had some additional drywall work done and he was also very fair and competitive. Daniel was also very professional in every aspect, from the contract to finshing the work.

Renovating a home is one of the biggest and most stressful things that you can go through and in this market it's hard to know whom you can trust. Ezra is a man of integrity and someone that you can feel confident in working with. Ezra has a personal touch and prefers to meet and discuss things face to face. He was always reasonable and fair regarding pricing and timelines. He holds his team accountable and was able to get our house fully remodeled before our family came into town for a large gathering (they worked until 11pm the night prior to assure that our place was ready to go as soon as guests arrived). His years of experience really helped as he confidently was able to navigate several projects that other contractors were timid about (and they came out beautifully! ). Ezra and his crew are respectful, hard workers, whom I trusted and felt at ease with having them working in our house day-in day-out. Ezra has a joy to him that radiates and makes him great to work with. He is about his family and his faith and those things shine through in the way he pursues your renovation and how he treats you like family. We are so grateful for his work and hope you have the same experience with your project!

We hired Construction Owl to complete the remodel of our kitchen, including removing a load bearing wall between our kitchen and living room to create one large open space. From the moment we started the project with Construction Owl, we were knew we were in good hands. Guy Hazan is the main designer and contractor. He came to our house, listened to our ideas, and immediately "got" what we wanted to do. In that first meeting, he provided us with specific feedback that enhanced our original idea. Guy is smart, professional, enthusiastic, and kind. He's a wonderful professional, and an even better person. Guy's crew is as wonderful and professional as he is. Guy and his brother David oversaw all the work, from the demo and framing crew, to the fabulous electrician took care of all our requests, to the various crews who came to install the floors, cabinets, counters and tile back splash. Each crew was hard working, kind, thoughtful, and clean. Every detail was attended to, and every concern or question we had was addressed, above and beyond our expectations. Guy told us the project might take about 8 weeks, but incredibly, the project was completed in just over 6 weeks. And it was on budget. We are so very grateful to have found Guy and Construction Owl. We recommend them with highest recommendations, and are so grateful to Guy and his entire crew for their care of us and our home. We love our new space, and have Guy and his team to thank.

We hired Curtis Construction Services recently To do a major remodeling project for us which involved the replacement of the old flooring, room addition (which we used as additional bedroom for our kids), new and modern kitchen and 2 bathrooms. We met and interviewed 5 contractors (after we had our blue prints of the new design) and when we met and talked to Daniel, we knew immediately that he is the best fit for our remodeling. Daniel was always reachable by phone, text messages or phone and he always was able to provide us with clear answers, solutions or even improvements to some of our items or colors for the paint. Daniel was very skilled and extremely creative in resolving problems that came up during the actual work and that we didn’t expected them. For example we always wanted to improve our design and Daniel was able to make it even better by providing better ideas to what we wanted. Many of his ideas, for sure saved us some good amount of money and we are very thankful to him. His crew were very skilled, knowledgeable and experienced people who have been with Daniel for a very long time. Overall we give all the people that were involved at our house a huge A++ for getting us thru one big remodeling project with lots of good humor and professionalism. We truly love and in love with our new house.

Oscar Morales our draftsman has been very helpful on our home remodel. He is extremely knowledgeable and created architectural plans for us to submit our project to the City as owner/builder. His fees are very fair. He is a team player who works well with others, seeks out good resources, and has helped us to move forward on our project in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Oscar for your project.

Duarte Building and Construction was a true pleasure to work with. From the very start communication was great, my messages were returned timely, my appointments were set timely to my schedule and Tony came out to see what needed to be done. Tony was professional and knowledgeable, listened to what I needed (roof repair) and didn't try to upsell or get me to do work I didn't need like a new roof. Robert, the roofer was truly a pleasure, very friendly, and knowledgeable and when he says he works fast, he is right about that. I am already preparing a list of other jobs I want done, and Duarte will very likely be the company getting those jobs. I have already referred them to friends. Great company!

We had 3 bathrooms remodeled by hillstar construction, which included 2 complete remodels (master bath and Jack/Jill) and 1 minor updating of guest bath. This is our first remodeling experience and lior and his crew made every effort to accommodate our needs and requests. We relied on lior advise for details and very happy of the outcome. lior responded promptly and communicated well, and his attention to details was really good. We also noticed that hillstar construction used higher end product than other contractors when we compared the estimates and asked specific questions. They installed frameless glass showers and completely replaced floors on two bathroom, changed countertops to quartz replaced we actually had to change painter (from different paint company) to lior crew as we did not like the original work. lior crew completely removed wall paper before painting, which original paint person could not do. Major part of renovation was completed less than 2 weeks, just couple of hours for installing glass showers later and some paint work due to change of painter along the way. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the quality of the work done and the outcome. Also, LIOR went beyond as a contractor as to helping us manage the house while we were away during renovation, and it is very much appreciated. Bottom line, he can really be trusted for the quality of work he provides.

W&W builders group recently renovated our guests and master bathroom. From initial design process to choosing out materials to the actual construction they walked us through each step and made sure we are in the loop. Most important, Magen gave us reasonable quote for the required job compared to other companies and they manage to deliver high quality. Very happy with the results and highly recommended!

I recently hired Shay and his crew to renovate the kitchen and hardwood floors throughout my house. This was undoubtedly the best experience with a contractor I have had to date. From the beginning and throughout the process he was quickly responsive to any questions or concerns I had. We did high end renovation with custom cabinets. They handled every aspect of the renovation with meticulous care, and the results prove it. The crew is professional. The head worker Iseia is extraordinarily talented and very pleasant to deal with. Expo Home is not the cheapest, but it's worth the price and wait to have excellence.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
