I wanted to fix a broken bedroom door, and I am glad to pick David Gomes as my handyman. Seeing the number of positive reviews he has, I decided to call him on the phone to describe the problem with my door. He clarified which pieces had to be replaced, what I'd be buying at Home Depot, how much the parts would cost, and how much his labor would cost. He was very clear in his explanation, and it was obvious that he has a lot of experience in this field. After talking to him on the phone, I later asked if he'd be willing to install a bathroom door in my master room, and he gave a very fair price for both jobs. We met at Home Depot during the morning, and he quickly identified which parts I needed to buy for my 2 jobs. At my house, he skillfully installed the 2 doors I needed, ensured that they closed perfectly, seamlessly matched the old existing moulding with the new door's moulding, and I have two brand new doors now. When I asked him if there was any way he could make one of the doors quieter, he found the adhesive strips necessary for dampening the door when it was slammed. After those two jobs were done, I really liked the way my doors turned out, so I pulled out my list of home improvements while he was still around. I had him change a toilet, paint the doors he installed, fix a broken shower door handle, etc. I just asked him how much extra he would charge for each additional job I asked, and I was convinced that his rates are very good. There are a lot of people who know how to do things, but very few can perform to the detail that you would like, with the work that lasts for years to come. It's important to find the right person who knows what he's doing, and David Gomes is a plumber, electrician, and the everything-handyman whom I'll always have in my contacts for whatever problems arise with my house. I recommended him to all my friends & family who have houses, as they'll appreciate the excellent work he does for the great prices he charges. If you find someone who claims to be able to do something for much cheaper than what David Gomes is charging, you'll probably end up regretting it later.

Ricardo methodically replaced all the parts in the tank to try and figure out the problem. In the end, determined it was the toilet itself. Did a great job. He was generous enough to try and not take money for labor but it was worth paying for all the effort. He was also happy to come in, despite the heavy rain.

Mr. Hartwell demonstrated explicit knowledge and understanding of his ability to perform the job at hand. Not only did he demonstrated his ability in his work, he also demonstrated his ability to explain in explicit details the different alternatives there were in solving the problem. From the end results as well as the cost in material and labor for each method "prior to performing any work or committing to any method. His work rivals that of many contractors charging twice as much per hour. I would recommend him to anyone needing door work done.

Jasper was communicative, transparent about costs and labor, and an overall nice human being to work with! He scoped out the project with us onsite, completed our project incredibly quickly, and good-naturedly accommodated our many last minute thoughts. Hope to be able to hire him again!

Installation of a new kitchen sink faucet, dishwasher, and fridge. Gerardo and his helper were professional, clean, and took great care not to dirty my pristine new cabinets or mar my floor. They thoroughly tested the installation to ensure that I wouldn't experience leaks after they left, and Gerardo communicated quite clearly. Materials were roughly equivalent to the labor cost, so I got a little bit of sticker shock on the materials side, but that's just because I'm ignorant of how pricey plumbing materials can be. Not Gerardo's fault that plumbing materials are expensive!

Needed a garbage disposal replaced for my tenant. All questions were answered in a timely fashion within the Thumbtack app. Once the garbage disposal installation began, he discovered that a certain piece was not fitting correctly. He kept me updated with what needed to be done and if there were going to be any additional costs. Provided the store receipts for materials along with an invoice for labor to my email. Would definitely work with again!

Dan is awesome! After a plumber fixed the leaky faucet in my kitchen sink, he pointed out the rotted wood in the storage area underneath and suggested I contact a handyman to replace it. I feared this would be really expensive to fix. Through a google search for a handyman, I discovered Thumbtack, which then connected me to Daniel Ball. I was really surprised by how reasonable his original quote was and am still amazed that I ultimately didn't pay anything more, even after two hours of labor. Above all, Dan was very cooperative about setting up an appointment, arrived promptly, and worked efficiently. Plus he is super-personable and friendly. Finally, I can look at the space under my kitchen sink without having to groan. (Wish I had "before" and "after photos!) I highly recommend Dan as a handy man for your home!

I needed to replace my bathroom fan and reseal my tub. Nick had a fair enough price (not the cheapest nor most expensive bid), but he was responsive. Day of he let me know he was running late, he brings his own equipment, but he's kinda quiet and didn't really explain what he was doing or offer any options on how to fix until I asked. The work was done in his estimated amount of time and it was done well. He left the old fan in the attic though. Btw, he adds material cost at the end on top of labor.

We had a fully overgrown small backyard with a nightmarish concrete drain dominating our our area and diminishing our enjoyment options. Victor was able to help design and subsequently build a the perfect yard extension and then integrate the drain with a perfect deck and stamped concrete patio. The efforts were fun and collaborative and workmanship exceeded expectations. All of this was completed during a busy construction season and on time. We are incredibly pleased and would recommend without reservation.

I called Kevin today and he came out to my house today to take a look at my project, which is installing tile in the closet under the stairs. He thoroughly explained his plan, what he needed to complete it, the approximate time it would take and how much he expected for labor. He also estimated the cost of the materials that he agreed to pick up. He was very friendly. He will be doing the project tomorrow, but so far things are off to a good start.

Joe responded very quickly to my initial thumbtack message. We met within an hour and I had a detailed quote/bill via PayPal within 2 hours. He included the price for materials, rather than just his labor, which I appreciated. He picked up all the necessary materials for the project and had the fence and gate pictured completed the following day. He also extended some concrete to keep our dog from digging under our 8 year old front gate, and shored it up with some of the extra lumber. He could have given me the hard sell to replace it, but instead got a few more years out of it for me at no extra cost. I am very happy with the quality of materials and craftsmanship. I would hire him again. In fact, he will be installing a dog door through our garage wall into the side yard as soon as the door arrives. He has done great work!

I had Marcos install a fire safe wall with fire door in basement area, per Daly City code requirement. He knew exactly what I wanted, had his two workers at the job site on time every day. The workers were extremely professional. It was a very satisfying experience.

Very polite and professional. Had a helper with him so picking up was not an issue. We had a minor scheduling glitch when one of his prior jobs ran over in length but that was not his fault. Would use him again, My job was pretty small but his price was far and away the best. He combined loads so I wasn't charged the usual dump fees.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
