Tom did a fantastic job installing and painting our new front door. He was the only contractor who came to assess the job before giving us a quote. He efficiently problem-solved an issue with the fit of the door that could have caused it to look unprofessional and messy. His finish work was impeccable, as he was careful and did not rush! He is clearly knowledgeable about a variety of home improvement projects and is easy to work with. We will be having Tom back to work on other projects around our house.

EXCELLENT experience!! If we could give Jamie 10 stars we would! My husband and I recently bought a new home and needed a new railing installed on our 3rd story outdoor patio/deck (the existing railing had dry rot and termite damage.) While in escrow we decided to get quotes for the new railing; Jamie came over the same day as I requested service and gave us a very reasonable estimate. As soon as we received the keys to our new house Jamie got to work right away. I changed my mind a few times during the construction and he was very accommodating. In addition, we have two young children, so naturally safety is a top priority for us and Jamie made sure to triple check every bolt and even suggested ways to make the railing even safer without compromising the look of the railing. He was very efficient and finished the project in a timely manner. Throughout the entire process he was very professional, was great at communicating, and executed the project to perfection. We absolutely love the way our railing looks and are very confident in it structurely. We will definitely be using Jamie again for other carpentry projects. Do yourself a favor and hire him, you won't be disappointed!

Mark is fantastic. He did several jobs at our home in Redlands, and completed them very efficiently. All work was done to the highest standards, and very quickly. Everything from start to finish in each job went exactly as planned and Mark conducts himself like a true professional. Coming from a family of contractors, I can genuinely say that Coastal Handyman Connection is the real deal. Fantastic work at a very reasonable price!

I had bought tiles for my kitchen back splash and realized that I had taken on a job too difficult to do myself. I shopped around and was most impressed by the Prosource Builders contractor, James Khatab. He took the time to listen to my wants and he offered options and ideas. We agreed on a price and he worked diligently until the work was completed to his and my satisfaction. It came out beautifully and I am very happy. He was always on time. He was very professional. My family felt very comfortable with him in the house. I will definitely hire him again for future contracting jobs in my home.

We hired Tj to redo a master bedroom that had mold issue. He took care of the mold first, cleaned everything, paint all the walls and ceiling after putting an anti mold primer, replaced a sliding glass door and put new carpet and an exhaust system in the master bath and trim down all the doors for improved airflow. Anyway he did a fantastic job. the room looks so nice. Tj is a real professional, with a great knowledge and great ideas. We were very impressed with the results. So much that we now asked him to replace the sliding glass door that is in the living room leading to the deck. Very honest and not pushy, Tj has surpassed our expectations. I definitely will keep his contact information for any other projects we may have.

Thank you, Dave and Design Plus, for installing new indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures. The new deck you built is GORGEOUS and we use it every night for drinks and to watch the sunset. The natural stone pathway that you created from the deck to the pool is elegant. You did everything you said you would, were on time and in budget. And you were right, the resin pebble pathway is lovely to walk on in bare feet. Thanks again!

Our job was to demolish and replace the existing wood patio / balcony that hangs over our garage port. Thomas Lee Cloud hauled away the old one and arranged for the purchase of the wood, the painting, and the assembly of the new deck. The best part was that he knew the city codes very well so that it would pass the city inspection. Many electrical complications arose but TLC was able to solve them.

We had just bought a new house and wanted to renovate a bedroom and bathroom that had not been permitted by the previous owner. We hired Ronald Butler and his crew because out of all the contractors we interviewed, he seemed the most knowledgeable and apt to delivering the services we were looking for. From the outset of the renovation, it was clear that our new home was going to need much more work than we anticipated. The discoveries we made when opening up walls, prompted us to change our scope of work. We were now facing new electrical, plumbing, foundation, roofing, and flooring among other things. My wife and I were nervous about the changes because of the financial ramifications, and with two small children, the impact it will have on our living conditions for the next several months. Fortunately for us, we found the right contractor. Ronald's no nonsense advice, professional guidance and expert workmanship has made this process a lot more manageable than we thought. The project included in addition to the aforementioned scope: new floor plan, new HVAC, new tankless water heater, high efficiency appliances for a new kitchen, solar tubes, new electrical sub-panels, two new bathrooms, with new tub, all new fixtures, toilets and sinks, new laundry room, energy efficient recessed lighting throughout the house, new copper piping, gas piping, new electrical conductors, recepticles and switches, new windows, interior and exterior doors, new drywall and paint, new insulation, and a new 400 square foot deck. There were many challenges throughout this project, and Ronald and his crew met and overcame each one in a timely fashion, with courtesy and professional tact. My wife and I feel very fortunate to have found Ronald. He has not only delivered us a completely renovated home, that meets all of our contemporary criteria with all the new energy efficient home options, but he has also given us peace of mind and security for us and our children in an ideal home for many years to come. ....photos coming soon.

FANTASTIC! Five star service! Jeff and his son did an outstanding job on my deck and installing my new doors. Jeff came when he said he would, did the jobs and completed them ahead of schedule at the price I was quoted. Great team which I would highly recommend! Outstanding craftsmanship. We contracted Jeff and Rick after getting bids from 5 other companies. We mainly dealt with Jeff for the majority of the job. He is very professional and detail-oriented, which we appreciated. He sent us an estimate and we hired him soon after- but then he told us he made a mistake and needed to charge 15% more for labor costs. We negotiated what we thought was more reasonable and he agreed. After a few more weeks of delay, he told us that Rick underestimated another portion of the job and would have to charge more as well. By this point (5 weeks after officially telling them they were hired), we were anxious to get started so we again agreed to the change. They started a week later and were done in three weeks. The good news is that we're very happy with their craftsmanship- everything looks exactly like we wanted it to. We were just disappointed with all the changes and delays. We will consider them for future jobs as their price for this project was very reasonable compared to other contractors.

January 7, 2017 To whom it may concern: It is our pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for John Duhon of Duhon Construction. John was our general contractor for an extensive remodel. The remodel included removal of first-floor interior walls, relocation of the kitchen to the back of the house, addition of two bath-rooms and an upstairs bedroom, downstairs and upstairs decks, a new roof and flooring, and plumbing and rewiring. This project, which took twenty months, involved coordinating the work of different subcontractors and work crews, consulting with a structural engineer, and working with an interior designer. For work that he did not do himself, John used knowledgeable, skilled, and competent subcontractors, who conscientiously followed project specifications. He effectively coordinated and managed the work crews, who were reliable and courteous. At the end of a day, John left everything in order. A friend commented she had never known a contractor to be so tidy. John was an expert at dealing with City Hall. His familiarity with building codes and with the permitting and inspection process, kept the project on track. When a situation arose in which work was called for that had not been foreseen in the plans, John took care of it--often without charging extra. Communicating with John at the project or by phone and email, was always easy. John was generous with his time and clear in his explanations. When requests or concerns were brought to his attention--for example, when we asked for storage space under the stairs--John willingly complied. John’s services were invaluable. We recommend John Duhon as a general contractor, highly and without reservation. William and Ana Greenberg

The job that Guillermo was hired was to remodel a wooden deck, but the job was so much more due to age and rut. Guillermo was a complete professional and a total craftsman with extreme attention to detail. The reason I hired him was because he is a hand-on contractor and was on the project every day. He involved me with every step of the remodel process. I do plan to hire Guillermo in the future for a bathroom remodel.

Ken Kuhles of Adorn Construction is not only an INCREDIBLE contractor but he is a prince among men. I've had the pleasure of working with him on two separate projects--a backyard renovation at our home and an income property renovation. Both times, he exceeded expectation. He is calm under pressure, great at coming up with smart solutions to challenges that may arise, and knows the business inside and out. You will be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable contractor. Believe me, after have being burned by negative experiences with two separate contractors, Ken has officially rejuvenated my faith in contractors. And, best of all, he is a kind man with integrity. Rare these days.

Brian Renslow is professional, creative, fast-working, conscientious, reliable, trustworthy and a very, very talented contractor. There's never been a construction problem that he was unable to solve for me, and I've given him a lot of challenges. He has built rooms onto our house, a fanciful bookcase that truly looks like a living tree growing up my daughter's wall, and his many skills include all construction, routine maintenance, plumbing, electrical, painting (including fine detail work), outdoor jobs and landscaping, and even aquarium work! If I won the lottery, I would ask Brian to be my full-time Man Friday, as there is NOTHING he cannot do, and do very well. After all that, I can also say he is the most honest contractor you'll ever meet. I'm happy to provide a personal reference. You can't do better than Brian Renslow.

Had Sergio do a bunch of odd jobs that were "too small" for other contractors in the area to waste there time with at a shopping center I manage. (Changed out some outdoor lighting, replaced a cover plate on a junction box, welded a door, broke up some concrete) I negotiated everything over the phone. He took pictures of the completed job. He's was quick, his pricing was fair and he didn't sweat me for a check 5 minutes after he finished. Great experience. Thanks Sergio, see you next time.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
