Houman came to evaluate my project for an IKEA kitchen installation on a short notice. He was very accommodating when scheduling an appointment, called from the road about very short delay and arrived on time. His estimate was not the lowest, but he said it was negotiable. He approached the project with professionalism and the desire to meet my needs. Even though he didn't do my project (as I chose an IKEA contractor), I was impressed by him.

Project details: Kitchen backsplash using a marble mosaic with a herringbone pattern. Many people (including me before commencing this project) are under the assumption that installing kitchen backsplash is a breeze. I soon realized that installing backsplash can be a very tedious job which sometimes requires someone with a lot of patience and attention to detail, all of which Robin has! At my first meeting with Robin, I was instantly at ease. He is very easy to talk to and was very helpful in suggesting different options in terms of materials to be used. However, we did run into a few hiccups. After inspecting my walls, he soon realized that we could not install the backsplash onto a painted surface. I was very worried that this would bring the cost of the project up, but Robin was able to find a solution very quickly and all to stay within my budget. Other issues arose, however, Robin was always able to quickly resolve them without tearing into my wallet. In addition, Robin was very respectful and mindful of the cleanliness of our home by ensuring that no dust from sanding our walls would escape the confines of his work space (he put up a really cool barrier!). Robin is an honest and hard-working individual who will never compromise the quality of his work and will never cut corners. Robin takes his time to ensure a finished product that is not only done properly, but done to perfection. Robin takes a lot of pride in his work, he is highly professional and an amazing person to work with. To be honest, he's just an amazing person (and funny too!) I will definitely hire Robin again for any future projects. Thank you so much Robin! You couldn't have made me and my family any happier with our new kitchen backsplash!

Michael and his crew did the laminate and carpet on my new home, and then 6 months later did a full kitchen remodel. Both projects were executed quickly, at the quoted price, and with a high degree of craftsmanship. Everyone who comes to my house compliments the floors and the kitchen immediately, so I'm constantly glad I chose Jizelle's Home Improvement. My kitchen remodel was a real challenge, as the guys had to take down a wall, gut the entire kitchen, and rebuild it from the ground up. They did a gorgeous job, came up with creative and tasteful solutions, and were very responsive to my feedback. I plan to hire Michael and his team again for future projects.

Our working experience with Excel Construction was a great experience. During the early stages of our meetings with Eyal, we were told that the remodeling project will take no more 4 weeks and it did. The workers that worked in our home were dependable and honest. During our meetings with Eyal, he set with us listened to our vision and ideas and made sure we were pleased with the designs of the new kitchen plan. The new kitchen is perfect and it represent exactly what we wanted to have. I would highly recommend this company to anyone.

I hired DACH Design to provide design concepts for a kitchen remodel, as well as, pull the kitchen look and feel into the living and dining rooms to create a more polished and cohesive look in the house. The project was just before the holiday season and DACH Design, working through the holiday and vacation, were very quick to turn around and present their ideas. I received a presentation binder that included floor plans for the kitchen, including tile, counter tops, back splash, floor, lighting and window coverings. Includes were also selections for furniture, rugs and lighting for the other rooms. I felt like they listened to what my tastes are, and presented some great ideas. I do wish DACH Design had the capability to create 3D renderings of the design layouts, as that was essential in making the final design decision, and I had to go elsewhere to have that done.

I chose to go with Eddie w/Skyline Construction and I'm so happy i did. He installed wood flooring throughout my house & built a beautiful outdoor patio cover . I have used other companies & handymen in the past but was never overly impressed with the timeline of the jobs and some were just plain unprofessional and unattentive to details. Where Eddie outshined & won my future business was his ability to solve issues as they presented themselves (like when my slab floor was very uneven after pulling out the carpet). There was no hesitation on solving it and presenting me options that stayed within our agreed budget. The detail in his work shows he has pride in what he does! My decision on writing this review and recommending Skyline is because people like Eddie are hard to come by... Hes not just looking to make an extra dollar wherever he can; he actually looked out for my bottom line and was very honest in his recommendations. Rafael Garcia La Habra, CA

Jesus, was incredible. I wouldn't even waste time calling anyone else. He replaced a kitchen sink facet for me. He arrived on time, completed the job with no problem, and actually ran and got a part I didn't have and cleaned up when the job was finished. Trust me just call him.

Steve responded quickly to my inquiry regarding putting in a wall mounted dog door. He arrived on the designated day and time; even arriving a few minutes early. He professionally went to work installing my very expensive “Hale” dog door. He protected my kitchen nook floor and outside area where work was to done. His attention to detail and cleanup was great. The dog door needed to be placed under a window, and he was able, with confidence, adjust electrical wires in order to accommodate the door. He is very friendly and his price for this project was very reasonable. I will definitely use him again for other projects that I need done. I am very happy with his work. My photo of this door came out horizontal, instead of vertical, but hopefully it shows how well Steve installed my double wall Hale dog door.

I first met Brad Snapir in 2011 when we met to discuss adding a second story onto our house in West Los Angeles which included a master bedroom, large bath, two closets and an additional reading room in back of the bedroom. All in all we added around 900 feet or perhaps a little more. It took us many meetings over almost a year's time before my husband and I were ready and prepared to begin the building process. Throughout this whole time Brad was understanding, patient and excellent at offering suggestions as to our remodel and willing to spend hours and hours meeting with us. We began the remodel in September of 2012 and we were back in the house in March of 2013 which was extremely quick. Needless to say there were questions and problems which arose during the building process but my husband, Brad and I were always able to work out whatever the problem was to everyone's satisfaction. If something had to be altered or changed in any way, Brad did it and did it well. We were very happy with the outcome of the remodel and happily moved back into the house after only 6 months although everyone told us it would be a year at least. Well they were wrong. Brad and his crew did the work quickly and well. If anything was not done exactly as I wanted they fixed it to be the way I wanted. I so appreciated the work that when I decided to remodel my kitchen in 2015 I immediately called Brad for the job. He worked with me in designing what I needed and ordering the necessary appliances, tile and countertops. I absolutely love the kitchen and would change nothing. It is exactly what I had in mind. The one other thing I want to point out about Brad is that over the years I have had several very very small jobs at the house which Brad has been so willing to just send one or two or three of his guys in a most timely manner and get the small job done. This has been a god-send as we all know how difficult it is to get work done on small jobs. I would recommend Brad and his company to anyone who wants a remodel large or small done and done well. I hired RGB construction to do my kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, paint the interior of my home, and new floors throughout my house. My designers name was Baltazar. He was very professional and came up with great designs for my kitchen cabinets, backsplashes and bathroom tile work. The workers were polite, on time, and took good care of the house. The work came out fantastic and I would recommend them for anyone who is considering a remodel. Tanelle P. Cypress CA

Very grateful I came across thumbtack, as it connected me with different contractors. Joe gave me an exact estimate for my kitchen remodel. I choose him to remodel my kitchen, since he answered my questions in an upfront manner, without any sales pitch or feel. Plus, he was the only contractor who gave me an exact quote, unlike the other contractors who had said they could only give me an approximate estimate. Joe was always calm and in control during the remodeling process and helped me feel calm throughout the process. My kitchen is unrecognizable, and that is a good thing. A complete makeover! Ecstatic with the results. I highly recommend!

Prior to hiring Kiko to install our Ikea Kitchen, I interviewed him on the phone to see how much he knew about the process. I shared my plans by email and Kiko presented a detailed quote taking into account every detail. I had already spoken to about three other installers, and although he was not the cheapest, hiring Kiko was worth every penny. He is a perfectionist and truely cares about the final product. Among all those I had interviewed, he came out as the one who knew about IKEA Kitchens inside out. Our kitchen was pretty large and had a complex design which required creativity and thinking out of the box. Kiko took his time to work around the details and produced a beautiful kitchen. Kiko and his team assembled and installed all the parts and cabinets within the timeframe specified in the contract and in a 4-day stretch with no interruption. One job at a time. I highly recommend Kiko for your nrzt IKEA kitchen project.

We hired Construction Owl to complete the remodel of our kitchen, including removing a load bearing wall between our kitchen and living room to create one large open space. From the moment we started the project with Construction Owl, we were knew we were in good hands. Guy Hazan is the main designer and contractor. He came to our house, listened to our ideas, and immediately "got" what we wanted to do. In that first meeting, he provided us with specific feedback that enhanced our original idea. Guy is smart, professional, enthusiastic, and kind. He's a wonderful professional, and an even better person. Guy's crew is as wonderful and professional as he is. Guy and his brother David oversaw all the work, from the demo and framing crew, to the fabulous electrician took care of all our requests, to the various crews who came to install the floors, cabinets, counters and tile back splash. Each crew was hard working, kind, thoughtful, and clean. Every detail was attended to, and every concern or question we had was addressed, above and beyond our expectations. Guy told us the project might take about 8 weeks, but incredibly, the project was completed in just over 6 weeks. And it was on budget. We are so very grateful to have found Guy and Construction Owl. We recommend them with highest recommendations, and are so grateful to Guy and his entire crew for their care of us and our home. We love our new space, and have Guy and his team to thank.

Joe and his crew were very clean and professional. He would have completed our project a week ahead of time however we continue to add on additional projects. My husband and I appreciated all of the work that was completed. We had three bathrooms remodeled, ceilings scraped and retextured. We had our fireplace resurfaced and many other things done that included electricial. We are very happy and satisfied with all of the work. We will have Joe and crew back to remodel our kitchen and patio next year. Thank you Joe!!

I am writing this to say a big thank you for our kitchen. Our kitchen was not an easy remodeling job. We had quotes from other companies and had been told it was too complicated. After Mike the owner of HLS Remodeling and Design had completed my brother's kitchen (which I love) I decided to give Mike a call. Mike came to us very quickly with a quote and had some really awesome ideas with what we could do. It was really easy to just leave it up to Mike because he knew what he was doing. Mike was also great in sending us color samples to help us with choosing a color scheme. The process of installation went smoothly. Mike was in touch with us to make sure that everything was happening at the right time. We are really pleased with our new kitchen and appreciate the quality of the cabinetry. Thanks Mike and the team of HLS Remodeling and Design.

Ivan did an amazing job! He installed our Kitchen counter top, Backsplash and Master bath vanity counter top. His attention to detail was right on point. He was meticulous and guided us through the process every step of the way. He helped us make some design choices that we never would of thought of. From start to finish it only took about 3 days. It looks beautiful thanks to Ivan and his team!

I was ready for some remodeling in my home. My kitchen needed an update and so did a few of the bathrooms. Searching google I found GIM and saw that they did energy efficient remodeling and upgrades. I contacted GIM and set an appointment for a consultant to come by to show me some options. The consultant showed us many samples of flooring, tile, roofing, painting, and multiple other products they offered. They even had their own architect to take care of the drawings for me and also had a 3d design for the kitchen. All the work was done properly and my home was left clean everyday. Appreciate all the hard work.

Those guys are wonderful. As a real estate agent, I called them to give my buyer an estimate for a complete remodeling of the property. They gave us a detailed scope of job. After they completed the remodeling of the kitchen, bathroom, roof, flooring and paint, my buyer sold the house for a huge profit. Thank you so much Dan.

I can't say enough good things about DTA Green Construction. Tomer and his crew were great to work with. Not only was my project completed on time, I was able to stay within budget but my new kitchen and bathroom are gorgeous. Tomer had great design ideas and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
