Introduction: Please note: due to the pandemic, all lessons are currently online. I teach internationally by Zoom. Your individual needs and goals are my priority. You are not just another number in a large music school. My education (BM, MM and DMA in Piano Performance from USC, plus years of vocal study), performance experience (international tours as an accompanist) and teaching experience (both university and private) give me a unique perspective. Being involved in theatre, I also emphasize the dramatic aspects of interpretation and stage deportment in vocal coaching. I use technology to work on both the audio and visual aspects of performance. Lessons are structured to include both technique and repertoire. For singing lessons, I combine the functions of three separate professionals: voice teacher, accompanist, and coach. It costs a lot less to hire one professional instead of three! I look forward to working with you!

Singing Lessons

Dr. Stephanie was great. She was very good with our younger student and the technological means that she uses to teach lessons is excellent.

Singing Lessons

My 16-year-old son has been taking vocal lessons from Dr. Stephanie for several months now. I have noticed a huge improvement in the way he sings and his overall posture. On stage, he really stands out from the other kids. I am so pleased with the progress he is making. We will be continuing lessons with Dr. Stephanie for as long as my son feels he would like to. Here are a few words from my son: “I have improved so much under the tutelage of Dr. Stephanie. She’s been very attentive as a teacher. You’ll be getting your money's worth when working with her. In only a couple of short months, I’ve improved a lot as a musician both vocally and rhythmically. I highly recommend Dr.Stephanie.”

Singing Lessons

I took four weeks of lessons with Stephanie. I feel she is one of the better teachers out there, but at the end of the day couldn’t justify the monthly cost for a hobby and what she brings to the table vs other teachers. In addition having some issues documented below. Pros: She provides a strong lesson plan with accompaniment tracks. Strong musical education background. Both technique and singing in a lesson. Cons: Expensive, weird payment structure (pay for 5 week months ahead of time). Unwilling to use solfege on exercises. Asks you to take notes, but doesn’t herself making each week a seemingly blank slate for you as a student. Pushes you into a recital mentality when that was not my goal. On my last lesson when I was struggling and angry about my performance, she made a video of me to ask me to be critical of myself compounding the problem.
Dr. Stephanie's Voice & Piano Studio's reply
Brett, thank you for your detailed review, which I will respond to, point by point, below. • First, regarding the cost: My BM, MM and DMA degrees are from USC (that’s why my students call me “Dr. Stephanie”). I provide the services of three professionals: voice teacher, vocal coach, and accompanist (I record vocal exercises and accompaniments on my own time, outside of lessons). Also, being involved in theatre, I emphasize the dramatic aspects of interpretation, as well as stage deportment. I refer you to Teresa M’s review, “Well worth cost. Would highly recommend”. And from Shelley B’s son, “I have improved so much under the tutelage of Dr. Stephanie. She’s been very attentive as a teacher. You’ll be getting your money's worth when working with her. In only a couple of short months, I’ve improved a lot as a musician both vocally and rhythmically. I highly recommend Dr. Stephanie.” My other 68 5-star reviews say the same thing. • My payment structure is the same as that of many other teachers. Students pay the same flat monthly fee, whether there are 4 or 5 weeks in the month, at the beginning of the month. In the past I had a “pay per lesson” policy but found that students would cancel 5 minutes before the lesson and I couldn’t fill their slot on such short notice. • Re: solfege, as I explained, for music theory purposes it’s best to refer to notes by their alphabet names, especially for choral rehearsals. • The reason I ask students to take notes is twofold: one, it’s their assignment for the week (what to practice), and two, the act of writing helps commit the information to memory. It doesn’t benefit the student if I take notes and they don’t. • You and I had just started lessons and the Recital is months away, so I mentioned it in case you might be interested later. My students are a community, like a family. We just had a beautiful Recital by Zoom in which old and new students connected, from the West Coast to the East Coast to Scotland to Singapore. • Re: the video, I took it to prove to you that your intonation was good, not for any critical or negative purpose. Remember, I asked you what you did well on the video. I wish you the best as you pursue your musical goals.

Singing Lessons

I am a classically trained singer, I studied Jazz-Vocal in college, but I wasn’t the best student.  I pursued music to study the craft, not to advance my career or to become famous.  Music and singing are my passion—it’s my life.  At some point, between my busy schedule and day-to-day life, I lost my way and forgot what truly made me happy.  Thanks to Stephanie, I was able to reconnect with my passion and love for signing.  Stephanie’s patience and expert instruction helped me improve my tone, pitch, and bravado.  Ultimately, she helped me refine my stage presence and confidence to take on the world.  I didn’t know what to expect when I first met Stephanie through Skype, I was pleasantly surprised.  Her warm heart and kind spirit shined through the screen.  Lessons through Skype are a convenient and easy way to access Stephanie from anywhere in the world.  It’s the perfect way to take lessons from a professional instructor.  Everyone needs a coach; she has challenged me to develop my vocals by providing honest feedback and guidance to take my singing to the next level.  I am proud what I have accomplished.  At the end of the day, singing is a therapeutic release that helps me stay focused and enjoy life.  I am thrilled I found Stephanie, she helped me find myself and my voice.

Singing Lessons

I have always wanted to learn to sing, but I never had the confidence to really give it a shot outside of the privacy of my car. I've been working with Dr. Stephanie for three months and I'm still amazed at how much I've improved in such a relatively short time. I had no training prior to working with Dr. Stephanie. No choirs, avoided karaoke like the plague. Now I can't wait to sing in front of my friends and family. Dr. Stephanie has helped me develop the confidence I didn't know I could muster. Our lessons take place in her welcoming apartment in Westwood. A typical session starts with warmup exercises that she has students record for practice throughout the week. She'll run the exercise and offer helpful instruction on anything I'm struggling with. She is kind and very patient while still pushing you to try something new. On my first lesson my range was two octaves. Now, she'll sneak in some higher notes and I keep surprising myself when I get to them. I can't emphasize enough how much my confidence has improved working with Dr. Stephanie, even outside of singing. People understand me on the phone now because I pay attention to how I enunciate. I've started swimming because I want to strengthen my lungs. I'm down 10 pounds in the last three months! I work in television production where I've told people "I'm not a creative type, I just support the creatives." I feel like learning to sing has awakened a creative part of myself that....I didn't really know I had. I'm applying for producer jobs these days and have been talking with friends about writing music for fun. It is not an overstatement to say working with Dr. Stephanie has made my life much richer. If you're reading this and hesitating because you don't think you can do it, I guarantee you working with Dr. Stephanie will fix that right up for you. Trust me, I thought the same thing three months ago and if I can do it, you can too. Go for it!

Thanks so much, Edwin, for this detailed review! I'm so glad that your progress in singing is leading to breakthroughs in other areas of your life as well! Looking forward to our Recital~

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

The first lesson may be paid separately in order to try it out; after that, payment is due for the balance of the month. The "gold standard" for adults is one 60-minute lesson per week. One 60-minute lesson=$115. Half the lesson is spent on technique and half on repertoire. One 45-minute lesson=$90. Half the lesson is spent on technique and half on repertoire. One 30-minute lesson (recommended only for young children who can't concentrate for a longer period of time) =$60.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I first ask them to sing or play something, to assess their level. If they've never sung or played before, that's OK! We also have a conversation regarding their musical goals. Once we begin training, I use technology to work on both the audio and visual aspects of performance.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My BM, MM and DMA degrees are in Piano Performance from USC. I also studied voice with noted USC professors. As a choral accompanist (university and community choirs) I've toured Europe, Canada and Australia. Being involved in theatre, I also emphasize the dramatic aspects of interpretation and stage deportment.
