Pamela B. says, "Virgilio has completed 7 projects for us in both wood and cement...including fences, gates, railings, decking, retaining walls and stairs. Every project required demolishing old structures, then joining the new work to the existing structures, so I have been able to observe many aspects of his work and am very comfortable giving him a high recommendation. His strengths are in planning and scheduling, workmanship and attention to details plus communication and managing a crew. Virgilio is a good problem solver and takes particular pride in making the projects sturdy for the long haul and safe. He makes suggestions thoughtfully but pays attention to my wishes. His crew really respects him and follows his lead, working steadily when he is occasionally not on site. He is accurate in determining material needs, starts promptly every day and his set-up and clean-up are the best I've seen. The crew and he work extra long days if needed to meet the estimated schedule and his communication along the way is especially good. I am very proud when I look at the completed projects and have passed my recommendations on to friends. Virgilio is always trying to improve himself with new training even though he is quite skilled...plus his manner is so cordial and warm. I will definitely be calling on him for my next project in the new year."See more

Josie S. says, "I had three demolition companies give me estimates and I chose US Demo/Hauling. I have narrated below my reasons for doing so. Other companies did not leave me an impression. My project: Demolition of an in-ground pool. Location: my residence in Martinez. Marcelo, the company president of the US Demo/Hauling came for the estimate. Marcelo was prompt, professional in actions and words, and courteous. If he had a cell phone in his possession, not once did he use it during our appointment time. He managed his scheduled time with me efficiently and focused on the job at hand. With precision, he started by measuring the pool size, then explained how the demolition process would be done. He brought up several questions while simultaneously proceeding to search for the answers. What type of access exists from the driveway to the pool, what is the gate size, how wide is the clearance between the fence and the house, what plants are along the track, and how thick is the patio slab ? These, he explained, would let him know which size of bobcat to use and also identify “roadblocks” to the pool site. He made recommended solutions which I found to be reasonable and doable. If I agree with the work and the cost, Marcelo indicated a tentative start date and completion date. Ylana, the project assistant, was as efficient and proactive. A complete packet of documents containing: demolition guidelines from the city of Martinez, copies of the company’s liability insurance, a job proposal, contract forms with highlighted areas that I would need to fill in should I choose US Demo, and a list of references with customers’ consent was mailed to me. Everything I needed to make an informed decision was included, I did not have to make follow up calls to ask for them. I also appreciated her prompt calls to notify me of changes and updates. The workers came very work day and utilized their time doing the job as scheduled. They came at 0800 and left when the day’s plan was accomplished. And, every work day, before departing, they cleaned the site. They availed themselves for questions and referred them to Marcelo if needed. US Demo/Hauling met the criteria for my business. 1. First, Marcelo’s knowledge about the business, his ability to communicate clearly, his talent to lead the company plus the ability to apply them into practice to meet the company’s mission and goals. 2. Ylana’s foresight and managerial skill. She is an asset to the company and facilitates her customer’s needs. 3. The dependable hardworking crew, who represents what the company stands for by showing up on time each day and doing what is expected of them. I would like to point out that my decision to select US Demo/Hauling had no bearing on the cost. I chose the company because of the personalized interactions I received from the staff. They demonstrated experience with their efficiency, honesty, capabilities, and trustworthiness from start to finish."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does demolition cost?

Demolition services cost $800, on average, with a cost range between $644 and $1,000. Demolishing your kitchen or bathroom may cost around $1,000 or more, depending on its size and the amount of work involved. However, demolishing a house can cost up to $30,000 (or more).

Contacting contractors is the best way to find out how much demolitions services cost in your area. That's because there are several factors that play into the total cost. The first is the size of your house, property or structure. Smaller homes that can be demolished with a single excavator will cost less than larger homes that may require more equipment and personnel, as well as more waste disposal fees. Also, labor rates will vary depending on your region.

How much does it cost to demolish and clear a house?

On average, it costs between $3,000 and $35,000 to demolish an entire house. Demolition also involves a number of factors that will influence the cost. House demolition pros will factor in the location of the demolition site, as well as whether they’re partially or completely tearing down the structure. They will also charge for outbuildings that need to be demolished, as well as dump fees for disposing of the waste.

How hard is demolition work?

If you’re not a professional, demolition work can be difficult, taxing and strenuous — not to mention dangerous, particularly when extensive precautions aren’t taken.

Demolition involves an understanding of structures and how buildings are built. This allows workers to understand the potential consequences of tampering with or removing things like walls, beams and other structures. Demolition also involves the use of heavy equipment like excavators. Dangers include falling debris, explosions, dust and other risks like collapsing ceilings and floors.

Who do I hire to get my home or property demolished?

If you choose to have your house torn down by machinery, you will need to hire a demolition contractor or company. These jobs require the use of heavy machinery like excavators, wrecking balls, bulldozers and more. The waste will then be scooped up and placed in dumpsters, which are hauled away by trucks. Another type of demolition is done by hand, and this service can leave you with salvageable parts to reuse in another home.

Search for demolition professionals on Thumbtack, and make your decision based on their customer ratings, reviews, project photos and cost estimates.

How long does it take to tear down a house?

This depends mostly on the size of the house and the complexity of operating on the worksite. Generally, you can expect a house teardown to take between one and several days. When you’re discussing your demolition project with potential local contractors, also ask them how long the project will take.

What's the difference between demolition and excavation?

Demolition is the act of tearing down a structure, like a house or building. It has its own name because the process itself is a skilled trade. Demolition crews must know how to safely and effectively bulldoze or tear a house down, how to handle different materials and occasionally even how to salvage certain materials from the house.

Excavation is the use of excavators to perform manual work like digging, trenching and tunneling. It also often involves surviving the ground, removing topsoil and clearing rocky surfaces.
