I am a professional Tutor. I love tutoring and helping people and students improve their French. I have been tutoring for 20 years and I know what the difference is from teaching, since I have also been a teacher! Private lessons are the best since we study and learn at your own pace. Sometimes it is hard for a teacher to know a student is having difficulties to understand a lesson since there can be up to 30 of them in a classroom...
I always make sure my students understand every explanation. We work in a relaxed atmosphere and we focus on what they really want to do.

Here is more information about me and what I offer:
I started tutoring English and French in France in 2006 and have spent 20 years tutoring children from 9 years old to graduates and adults. I also worked a year as an English teacher in a private middle-school in the suburb of Paris.
I have tutored 119 students during private lessons including 16 students preparing the AP test, and have led 28 small group classes with up to 8 students in each. I know everybody has their own rhythm, so I adapt to yours.
I have worked or been working with employees from K&L Wine Merchants, Houlihan Lokey, Palantir, Apple, Adobe, Blizzard, Biocodex and the International Criminal Court in la Hague needing French lessons to teach, support and increase this skill for their job. I also translated for DHC Skincare for the launch of the brand in France and French speaking countries.
In April 2015, two of my students to whom I teach the French II program passed their exam for French III and were even offered to go to French III Honors. Both also won a medal at Le Grand Concours, the National French Contest held in late March.
Fourteen of my students took the AP test Between May 2016 & May 2025 and passed with success!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Sophie! We worked together for over 5 years and the progress I made with her as my teacher in learning and speaking French has resulted in my husband and I moving to France permanently. The decision to relocate would never have been possible without the guidance and dedication of Sophie teaching me all aspects of the language. Sophie is fantastic. She arrives very punctually and always prepared with more lesson material than we can cover to make sure we are always well engaged. I worked with Sophie to prepare for the French AP, and can say firsthand that she was a wonderful tutor. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My rates depend on the level and age of my students:
Kids (9+), Middle-school & High-School (French I, II): $80/h
Young adults (18-25 years old) & High-School (French III, IV, AP): $90/hour
Adults: $100/hour
I am happy to offer a $5 discount per lesson when you take more than one lesson a week.
Classes for 2 students of the same level are possible: add $30 per hour.
All materials are included. If you live further than Menlo Park, Atherton, Stanford Campus or Palo Alto, I may charge a supplement per lesson, depending on how far you are.
Here is my price policy:
1. If you need to cancel a lesson, you must notify me at least the day before. Any lesson canceled on the day of the lesson will be fully charged.
2. If for any reason I do not arrive on time, the length of the lesson will remain the same. For example, if I am 5min late, the lesson will finish 5min after the regular time.
3. The lesson starts the moment I arrive at your place. If for any reason you are late, we will have a lesson corresponding to the time we have left. The lesson will be fully charged.
4. If you have several lessons per week but you need to cancel one of them, the discount will not be applied for the remaining lesson. The discount is reapplied as soon as we start having several lessons again. For example, you have 1h twice a week at $80/h. Thanks to the discount offered, your rate is $75/h. But if you cancel one of the lessons, your rate goes back to $80/h for the remaining lesson.
5. If I am the one who needs to cancel one of the lessons when you have several lessons per week and we cannot find another time to reschedule it, the remaining lessons stays at the discounted rate.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I got my Master's Degree in English/French Translation in 2008 in France. I have been teaching and tutoring since 2006 (more details in the ABOUT section), and I opened my business here in February 2014. I have studied English, French, Translation and Linguistics and I have been doing this job for 20 years.
I often travel back to France, and I really stay tuned to what's happening there. I also check on new book and music releases, in order to offer my students the very latest ones, among of course more classical references, or cult ones.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked or been working with total beginners, junior-school/high-school/college students who wanted to improve their French or prepare an exam, adults who needed to work on their French for their jobs or just willing to continue what they started learning at school.
