Raquel immediately understood Kuma's (our 1-year-old Chow Chow's) personality and geared her training for it. Kuma is stubborn and lazy and she would only listen to us when she felt like it. Raquel shared some techniques and tools to encourage Kuma to start listening to us and we were amazed at how quickly Kuma started listening to us. Thank you Raquel!

Kym has a number of years experience with dog training. She has five dogs of her own plus she privately trains dogs at her home. Her technique is a combination of gentle and firm with alot of positive reinforcement. My dog and I trained at the Yucaipa Oak Glen Park location. She recommended taking your dog for two 45 minute walks per day so I would take my dog for a long walk at the park before training. I had concerns the dogs would fight but she has never had that happen. She instructs the owners to keep the dogs apart at all times. If you train at this location you will need to pay at the Yucaipa Community Center at the park prior to the class. They are open until 9pm. Remember to bring treats with you for each session. Kym trains with treats until the dogs have learned each command.

Denise was great with my German Shepard name Misty. When I started with her Misty was jumping and pulling me where I could not control her. After two months I was able to train with her in 4 Paws for Patriots. She is now a certified service dog. We would not have been able to complete that task without her training. Vance Myers

Paula has been such a wonderful trainer for our puppy who was full of anxiety and too much for us to handle. We needed professional help! Just a few weeks ago we started training and Izzy (puppy) was jumping, counter surfing, biting, and destroying property. She still has some of these behaviors but they are lessening and improving A LOT! Paula is incredibly knowledgeable, caring, and inspiring – as her business name implies. She always spends extra time with us and is happy to explain over and over again so we can understand what our dogs behavior. She truly speaks the dog language. Give her a try – you will be very happy with the results – we are!

Melissa is an awesome dog training. Just from one session, we saw a difference in our dog Frankie. She also has walking services that helps our Frankie with his anxiety. And not to mention more training time on the leash when she takes him out for his midday walks. She's flexible and very accommodating. I highly recommend her! Thanks Melissa!

I wanted to let you know how valuable the beginners obedience training was for my Airedale, Toby, and me. Tobey is 15 months old and before I brought her to you, she was out of control. I’m not sure I was ready to admit that when we started but I soon realized it was true. After just one week the difference in her was remarkable. After six weeks, she was like a new dog. She can now be controlled and no longer has the bad habits I thought were just "being a puppy". I have learned what you already know, that it is easier to train Tobey than it is to train me! Thanks again for a wonderful experience and if you ever need a reference, please don’t hesitate to call me.

Basic obedience training , and training my dog not to pull on the leash.. Philip and Michelle Kaough were awesome with my dog. I would highly recommend Philip and Michelle to people with new puppies. They have a true understanding of dogs and their underlying motivators. They helped my husband and I see how vital structure and consistency is for Bo's happiness and well being. I really hope in the furture that we get to continue to the next level of training class with them.

Alison was always a pleasure to have come to the house. Our dog Sonny just loved Alison. She helped us to teach Sonny basic obedience and he learned quite fast. She accommodated our schedules and was very flexible. She came to our home to work with Sonny twice a week. for 10 weeks. By the second week Sonny could follow commands pretty well. She gave us good advice on what kind of leach would help us because he would pull while walking. From the beginning, we could see a difference in Sonny's behavior and how well he would listen. We are very happy with the training Alison provided to Sonny and the tips she would give us on how to get him to do the things we wanted him to do. We will be calling on Alison again in the near future to assist us with future training. It was a wonderful experience and we are very happy and satisfied with the training we all received. This review is long overdue. We worked with Dave a few months back and he is fantastic! My husband and I have a 19month old Goldendoodle who has had previous training, puppy training through Petsmart and Petco but none of it compared to the training we received from Dave. He is great at what he does and explains things in a way that make total sense, like why didn't I think of this before?! He uses positive reinforcement training, which was huge for us. Dave works with your schedule and is flexible, he emails you after every session to go over what you've learned and how to continue the training when he's not around. We see a total difference in our dog after having sessions with Dave, we are looking forward to having him back in the near future to continue our training!

After working with David during the last couple of months, it's clear that he understands solution based approaches. Means different methods and solutions to each situation. Impressive training ability! David is very knowledgeable & his professional conduct gives way to his even friendlier demeanor. I can call him in between training sessions with any questions and he gives great care and concern to each call.

Jessie is knowledgeable and reliable about walking dogs. She has some training experience. My dog is very leash reactive and I'm not totally comfortable letting him go with someone without my supervision. Jessie was willing to let me do that. For now, I've postponed dog walking, but not because of Walk'n Wag'n. They seem to be a reliable and professional company. I would recommend them.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

Paul at K9city was amazing. Very honest, professional and caring. He has helped us so much with our dogs behavior problems. Still a work in progress but Paul continues to check in with us, gives us feedback and suggestions and supports us in any way he can. Paul and K9city have been a lifesaver for our family and our dog, we can not thank him enough!!

Brian trained my dog Bella. I hired him for 3 training sessions and the amount he taught her in just three sessions was awesome. Probably more important than training her, he trained me how to work with her and re-enforce what he taught her. Bella really seemed to like Brian (possibly partly because he always has treats with him!) and she really positively responded to his instruction. He does seem to have an immediate connection to dogs. The training was very interactive and he made sure to address any problems I was having with Bella and offered very practical solutions. I would definitely recommend him if you are looking for someone to train your dog.

Melissa has helped with our new dog who had serious abandonment issues. Our dog is now much more social and less anxious thru the positive training Melissa emphasized. She really loves her work.

Marissa has been great with my dog - after one session, he loved her. After the 2nd session, we were able to get him into a muzzle with no problems and the visit to the vet was much better than previous visits. She's very patient and is great at reassuring you that your dog's issues can be overcome.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
