Scott and his team were an absolute pleasure to work with! They arrived in a timely fashion, were very respectful of my things and very well organized. I was impressed that they were able to pack up my entire 2bd/2ba apartment in one day, then were ready to move everything the next. I'd 100% recommend them to anybody looking for assistance with their move.

Well Walter was very professional and the movers showed up 45 mins after the time window which was not bad. The move lasted 6 hrs to a one bedroom apartment which I felt was a bit too long. Some of my stuff got damaged as I saw after I started resetting my home so movers could use some extra caution. I know one guy was very cautious but not the other who I feel caused the damages I noticed later to my stuff and the apartment door and walls as they moved things into my place.

I needed help with moving some heavy furniture around my house (I have a 3-story house with narrow staircases) and also needed some larger furniture transported to a charity that I like (but unfortunately no pick-up service). I found the entire experience both convenient and very professional. Their website is great, very easy to set up an appointment and the text reminders were very helpful as well. Edward was also very responsive to my initial text before I had the website info. The movers showed up exactly on time and were very efficient (but careful with my furniture!) with the move. I had originally booked 2 hours but the entire move took much less time. Both movers were extremely polite, professional and helpful...the entire experience was very positive...I wish more services ran this professionally. I felt that their prices were very reasonable as well...I've spent far more money renting Uhauls and bribing my friends with food/drink to help ;-). It was very apparent that the owners of this company care very much about their company and customer service...I will definitely be using them again and highly recommend this company!!

I have moved many times and always something went wrong, and Silicon Valley Luxury Moving delivered the most professional service I've ever seen. The movers were quick and extra careful wrapping my furniture and getting it moved through our narrow doorways and taking it upstrairs at our new townhouse. Everything was placed where we told them and nothing was damaged or even scratched. They used their equipment to get it done fast, so they finished even before the estimated time. These guys are providing excellent services for very competitive price. I will definitely recommend this moving company to all my friends and will use them for my future moves! Our movers were Bogdan and Sergey, thank you guys for the great job!

Had a move scheduled for Sunday morning from 9-10 am. The team showed up exactly at 9. The guys very very friendly and they did not shy away from carrying heavy stuff. Team members including Juan, Murrilo and Hanssel were very professional and continued working for 6 hours straight. Overall I am very pleased and would surely recommend Main Movers to all my friends.

Excellent service! From the initial phone call the representative was friendly and extra polite. The movers were on time and very careful. They wrapped most furniture with blankets and plastic after we already had wrapped in plastic! They were careful, polite and effective. No surprises with cost, exactly as expected and they explained and itemized everything. Would recommend and use again!

They showed up on time and worked hard to get all of our stuff moved in safely. We were supposed to have 3 movers, but the night before they let us know they only had 2 available, so it took longer than we had expected, but overall we were very satisfied.

Moving can be a stressful and hiring movers can be even more so. I've had a couple bad experiences before, so I was a little unsure what to expect on thumbtack. Ken wasn't the first to reply to my request, but of the half dozen responses I received, he was the only one who wanted to see what we had to move in person. I had been considering another mover, although that fell through when that mover became unavailable for a two week period without any prior notice. Ken's quote was also more than reasonable, and I felt comfortable with him, so we scheduled the move. Our time was not specific (sometime mid morning). I don't know if that's typical for him, but it didn't bother me once we knew when he was on his way. Ken doesn't text, so you'll actually have to pick up the phone to reach him. I think that's probably better than email as well. I like texting, but I think Ken's old-school about that. Ken showed up as promised with a second mover, Theo. His quoted rate was for two people, not per person as with the other quotes I received. I later found out Ken (and Theo) are involved in scouting, which explains the ethics I saw Ken display before, during, and after the move. I was extremely pleased with the work Ken and Theo did. They were professional and amenable to all the extra requests I made of them. We ended up using them to help move some additional items, so the move took pretty much all day. And at the end, Ken didn't try to pad the hours or demand extra money (or any kind of tip--which I gave them anyway because they deserved it.) Ken charges mileage for his truck (fuel costs at 9 mpg) and return travel time from the origin of the move, which is pretty standard fare. Only one quote I received didn't do this, but their hourly rate was almost triple. You do the math. He also did not require me to commit to a minimum number of hours (although this move ended up taking more than 9 hours.) They weren't the fastest movers, but they weren't the slowest, and they were careful with our belongings, which I really appreciated. What's the good of hiring movers only to have your things damaged in the move? We also had difficult stairs at both the from and to locations. Ken doesn't charge extra for stairs, etc. It takes longer to be careful negotiating the tight corners, but that's to be expected. They put blankets down on all the railings. I think they might have run out of blankets, but I'm not sure. One suggestion: Be sure you've got everything packed and larger pieces accessible. They're used to moving furniture (I think Ken specializes in moving antique and high-end furniture) not packing boxes. Part of what slowed us down was that we were not completely ready for them, and we kept adding new items as they became ready to move. Still, Ken and Theo just smiled and asked what else we had. I would highly recommend Wood Frog Transport to anyone looking for a good mover. Ken made our experience a positive one, which may be the very first time that has happened for me in dozens of moves over the years.

Nancy and Carlitos from Fairprice Movers were great to work with. They were professional and personable. Most importantly, they followed through with their work. I live in the Midwest, and the project was to package 40 carts in San Francisco for shipping to the Midwest. In an effort to maintain quality assurance, I asked Carlitos to keep me updated with pictures and the amount of time each cart took to package. He sent pictures and updates frequently, which was exactly what we needed. I would recommend Fairprice Movers to anyone looking to package or move items safely and efficiently. Thanks, Nancy and Jensen! Ed

You WON'T find a better moving and cleaning company... trust me, I've used several before I found Mod Movers. They tell you it will only take 4 hours and end up taking you 12, and charge you enormous rates and horrible service.

A+ service from the crew at Indie Movers. I had used them for a previous move in the South Bay and decided to call them up to get a quote to do a job down in Alameda County; turns out they are expanding and just opened a new base in Pleasenton! My grandmother lives out in Dublin and had a medical emergency which required that she move to a downstairs unit. The guys at Indie Movers were able to take care of everything and set up her apartment the exact same way, carefully taking apart all of her antique furniture and assembling it just as it was. The two gentlemen that they sent, Will and Oren, were professional, respectful, courteous, and most importantly- on time and worked fast!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
