Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: MY BACKGROUND: -Classically trained since age 4, about 30 years -Bachelor's degree in Music from Princeton University; Master's degree in Music Technology from Stanford University -7+ years of extensive teaching experience with both adults & kids -Wide range of musical training and knowledge (piano, violin, singing, classical, jazz, improvisation, music technology, music from other cultures) -Please see my website and YouTube / Spotify channels (click on icons at the bottom of my website) for examples of my work! You can also peruse through my portfolio below for videos of past recitals, etc. MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: -Music is a LANGUAGE and I focus on MUSICAL FLUENCY / LITERACY. My goal is to teach the building blocks, vocabulary, and grammar of music, so that YOU can discover and express the music that is in you, in whatever form it takes. This means that I don't strictly focus on perfect replication/performance of classical repertoire, but prioritize the student's full understanding of what they are playing, and being able to apply it creatively in different contexts. I base my teaching on certain aspects of traditional classical training (like reading sheet music, good technique, and repertoire) in order to build a solid foundation, and I also incorporate music theory, improvisation, ear training, music from other genres, etc. for wholistic musical development of the particular student. MY OFFERINGS / LOGISTICS: -I teach mostly in small group formats (2-4 students), which includes fun and stimulating group activities as well as focused individual practice and feedback. -I offer both in-person (in my home studio in Mountain View, CA) or online lessons through zoom. -I hold yearly recitals and occasional special classes or mini-concerts, which provide good opportunities for performance and additional learning. -The lessons are given weekly in 90 minutes ($90 for team) or 60 minutes ($60 for team, or $120 for private, availability permitting). -Bi-weekly lessons can be considered on a case-by-case basis, with $30 additional fee per lesson. -General availability on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday afternoon/evening in Pacific Time. Please inquire for details. WHAT I LOOK FOR IN POTENTIAL STUDENTS: -Good attendance with consistent schedule -Good practice habits / willingness to implement them -Respectful behavior / conduct in class -Generally age 7+ especially for online lessons

Hana has been working with my 14 year old son over the past 3 months and I have seen so much progress and enjoyment in this time compared to the previous few years he has been in lessons with other teachers. He gets along well with Hana, who is very patient, kind, fun, and teaches piano in an approachable way, breaking down a piece so that he can master each part and get a real sense for the music. Hana is a phenomenal teacher for any age and ability!

I've had about 10 teachers since starting piano lessons some 60 years ago. Hana Shin, by far, is the best! She is an extraordinarily gifted musician and teacher in so many ways. It's not just the immense depth and breadth of her knowledge across all genres -- from classical and modern standards to blues, jazz and pop. It's not just her appreciation of precision and her non-judgmental patience. It's not just her gentle approach and contagious passion for all things musical. What really sets Hana apart from my other teachers is her rare ability to create a process -- a logical roadmap -- tailored to this student's particular level and areas of interest. For the past several years, I have worked with four other teachers to try to go beyond sight reading and learn how to embellish or improvise around the blues and jazz. It's been a frustrating experience, to say the least. Until Hana. Hana is the only teacher who has adapted my capabilities -- and limitations -- around a clear, step-by-step, process that I can understand and execute on at my own pace. Along with working on recommended theory books, customized exercises, and my favorite pieces, Hana's guidance is helping me to unlock the the mysteries of blues and jazz improvisation. In a recent recital, I noticed how her personalized approach has inspired many other students, whether playing themes as solos or duets (with Hana) from Beethoven, Mahler, Wintergatan, "Moana,"or Ray Charles. Whether you're a beginner, an intermediate or advanced player -- a youngster or retiree like me -- look no further than Hana Shin to learn the infinite joys of playing piano. -- Mark Nelson

Hana is a wonderful piano teacher! She is nice, kind and very patient in working with kids. My daughters have two very different personalities and she’s very thoughtful in how to cater her lessons to both of them so they not only learn piano, but also cultivate a love and appreciation for music. If you are looking for a piano teacher, I highly recommend Hana!

It has been an absolute pleasure having Hana as my piano teacher. As a newbie, it is difficult for me to fully evaluate the breadth of knowledge and skill that Hana is able to provide, but it is clear that she has a very strong ability to provide an individually-tailored systematic method to learning various pieces, techniques, and concepts regarding music and piano. Her guidance has been instrumental (pun intended) in my piano-learning journey. I look forward to continuing working with Hana!

My daughter Stefanie started piano around 5, now she’s 6 years old. She has a couple of teachers before Hana. I feel lucky to find Hana, and now I can stopping searching for a better one. She has disciplines, but not super strict. She loves teaching, and knows how to direct and encourage my daughter whenever she could not focus or carried away. She makes efforts to hold recitals (twice a year), we just had the winter one, it was amazing. Thanks Hana, for inspiring Stefanie. You are more than a good teacher!
