I cannot say enough about Thinque Prep and Joyee Lin. He is dedicated to his students success and does a very thorough job of preparing them for the ACT or SAT test. My son, Zack, who is very bright but requires a lot of patience worked with Joyee over the summer and brought his composite ACT score up from 30 to 33. His math score increased a full 4 pts. and he scored a 35 in English. Thinque Prep has other services related to tutoring and college application preparation. Zack will be working with Joyee on his college application essays. Joyee is in California and we are in Texas but this was never an issue as the sessions are done via video chat. The office manager Jen was great to work with and the appointment process was easy to navigate. I found the rates to be very competitive for like services. If there was a way to give extra stars I would!!

Mauri was by far the easiest to talk to, friendly and above all, intelligent, organized and creative minds I have ever encountered. Always terrified writing my own resumes, with several bad and uncomfortable experiences with third party companies who never seemed to listen or convey the information I gave them, it was a true breath of fresh air to find Mauri. Not only did she actively listen to me go on and on with the patience of saint, but was kind enough to help me find the self esteem and for the first time in my life, have a resume I not only feel comfortable representing me, but proud to present to perspective employers. Too bad there aren't 100 more like her.

I had never used a professional resume writing service but I am so glad I did. I love my new resume. Ashley did a fantastic job - exactly what was promised and worth every penny. I’m glad I’ll have a fresh resume when I officially kick off my search.

Karen is amazing! She encouraged me to think harder about what I was writing, and pushed me to create my best writing. Most importantly, Karen helped my voice shine through in my essays. She was wonderful to work with, and she always got edits back to me quickly. Her comments and suggestions were very intelligent and got me to really think about what message I was conveying in my writing. I wish I could go through the college application process again just to work with Karen a second time!!

I have collaborated with Katie on many writing and editing projects. Katie’s been an invaluable resource and collaborator in helping me put my best foot forward through the written word. Whether you need a second set of eyes for general email correspondence, to help with business presentations, to edits on your resume and LinkedIn profile (all things Katie has helped me with), Katie writes and edits with a keen sense of beginning, middle and end, getting to the core of what’s most important to convey all while keenly focusing on succinctness, and a sensitivity to the nuances of effective written communication. I highly recommend her.

Flexible in approach - I explained what I wanted and Joseph worked my wishes into his style of getting the child to do what was required. My son hates writing but Joseph did a great job of getting him to churn out some work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
