We found Stay Green and Clean Landscaping Services on Thumbtack.com. They came out to our home and gave us a proposal for cleaning/trimming up the front and back yard. When the job was completed, the yard looked amazing! We will be using them for a bi-weekly service now. We highly recommend this company!

I needed someone out to my house A.S.A.P and they were able to come out the next day and give me a quote on all of the work. We needed some major stuff done to our property and after the fantastic price we set up a date for them to come out. They arrived and played no games in getting started. The crew was courteous and very respectful. The work was seriously amazing and our house is now ready to sell not to mention stands out. I will definitely keep them in mind for future projects as well as referring them to anyone who needs landscaping help. As if their work and price was not enough, I needing other junk hauled away and again they beat out the price that others had given me and did a great job. Seriously without hesitation I would hire them again!

Charlie did a good amount of landscaping and softscaping on my backyard this year. He also did some fencing, paint jobs, and installed pavers for me. He is reliable, takes directions well, and his prices are competitive. ~ Dan V. San Diego, CA

They not only do landscaping but also hardscape. They did a fence, BBQ pit and pavers job for is and now we love speding most of our time in our backyard. Juan is a man of many talents...carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, etc. More importantly, he's bright and finds solutions to problems by thinking outside the box. Many times he's come up with novel approaches and fixes to problems that others could not solve. He has excellent communication skills, and is always fun to have around, but at the same time, he can work independently without constant supervision. He takes great pride in his work, and his product always shows it.

We hired Reyes Waterfall Landscaping to remodel/enlarge the waterfall for our existing pond and in the process, also fix the large leaks in the original structure. They really worked with us to follow our design ideas rather than their own thoughts - which ended up making the fountain changes we really wanted, while keeping our costs down. They also were on board with our using donated rock from a neighbor's yard, which saved us a LOT on material costs and also enabled us to use local rocks/boulders which matched the original materials used in the existing pond and fountain. I have already recommended them to a friend, and would do so again!

Reliable. Does a good job maintaining my lawn and landscape. They come through and mow, blow, weed and trim. A little on higher side for price ( we pay $60/visit for 2 guys 1 hour every two weeks) but they're good guys.

Ronsi had a positive attitude and worked diligently to complete the tremendous task get our landscaping spruced up so that we can sell our house. I especially appreciated how he transformed our backyard from a daunting field of foxtails and fig leaves, to a cleared space ready for someone else to improve! He has a joyful personality and great work ethic! I highly recommend him! I included a before and after pic of the backyard.

I have a large ongoing landscape project with Sal who has been punctual and professional at every milestone. He goes into detail in explaining what needs to be done and the timeframe for each part of the project which is greatly appreciated in knowing what you are paying for. He gave plenty of feedback when choosing the materials we are using and there were a majority of choices to allow us customization to the landscaping for all aspects of the project. Even though I've still got the project ongoing, I've recommended Sal to other friends who have interest in starting landscaping projects and will continue to do so.

Yard of Dreams has been a phenomenal company to work with to accomplish my landscaping projects. Due to my demanding work life, plus my active family, it created a formula which resulted in a neglected front and back yard, which was not the first impression I wanted to give to the world. I received a leaflet, which looked very professional, almost as if someone was telling me something (hint, hint, wink, wink). Called and scheduled an appointment, and they showed up to take care of everything I needed done. I will be recommending them to my friends and family, and I will definitely call them back to tackle all my future tasks. Thanks Yard of Dreams, for making my dreams come true...well, at least with regards to my landscape. ;)

I hired Ramon and his crew to take down a leaning retaining wall and put up a new one. It was about 50 feet long and needed to be about 4 feet high. Also, they were building stairs into the hill. Also we asked him to widen our driveway by about 2 feet. All of this took them less that 7 days and came out perfectly. They even built in another step going up to the wall without asking me (we had discussed options of what I could do on my own). It was a great surprise. Very professional, very courteous and amazingly quick. Will use Ramon for and landscaping needs in the future.

I had a wonderful experience getting the job done from Jose. At first I was not sure since I did not see any reviews for him, but then he offered a very competitive price and so I took my chances. Not only did he get the job done well but also cleaned up the entire area very well. He also helped me with some additional work to shovel up an area next to my house for no additional cost.

I had Lawrence out show us our options on turf. He went through the whole process and answered all of our questions. We ended up with the Jade Turf and a pathway of pavers as well. Would recommend them to anyone, quick install, 5 stars.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
