Nicholas C. says, "We wanted to create a new flush TV wall over an existing fireplace area in our family room from an awkward space into something that looked clean, modern, and intentional. I sent out a quote request to various contractors and Pascual at Big Sur Framing was one of the first to call to introduce himself and get a better understanding of my project. We chose to hire him because his quote stood out as fair, transparent, and reasonable and we are very glad we did. The finished result exceeded our expectations and looks like it has been part of the original home design all along. The framing, drywall, texture matching, trim work, and attention to detail all came out fantastic. Beyond the workmanship, Pascual’s professionalism, punctuality, and communication throughout the process was excellent. One thing that really stood out was that he brought thoughtful ideas and creativity to the project. Our original plan was to completely close off the side of the recessed opening with drywall, but he suggested that rather than closing it in, we utilize this space behind the front wall for a pantry or more cabinetry. I hadn’t originally considered this, but he saw an opportunity to add both functionality and character to the space and had no problem adding this to the job scope. It ended up making the overall design feel much more intentional, and it has turned out to be what my wife is most excited about as we plan to set up a coffee bar here. We’re genuinely grateful to have found Pascual and will definitely be hiring him for future projects."See more

Curtis T. says, "I am a real estate investor, home remodeler, real estate agent, former 30yr Real Estate Appraiser, Architectural Drafter, Property manager of commercial / residential & more. I have known Chris Thatcher for years and most recently had him work with me on a large home remodel project of mine in Mill Valley. The project included exterior deck framing repairs, siding and trim work, as well as painting days. Chris assisted me with many wiring and lighting changes, framing changes, floor leveling and supporting of previously unsupported work by others. This remodel was of a 2700sf home included 2.5 bathrooms and a completely new reconfigured kitchen. Chris Thatcher is trustworthy, capable and researches ways to complete new issues and problems which arise, has his own professional quality tools and works well on his own or along side me. I recommend Chris Thatcher to my Real Estate Clients for residential home remodeling projects or smaller modifications and construction assistance. I will be hiring Chris Thatcher for future work with me."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
