Natalia B. says, "Julian was absolutely delightful to work with. I had a fairly difficult request where I wanted about half of my cabinets resurfaced and the rest spot fixed in my kitchen and 2 bathrooms and my front door. There were various levels of damage and Julian carefully went through each cabinet and door to sand and restain them. He also stripped and re-stained the front door which had 2 different colors on the outside and inside and 2 large holes that needed to be patched from a new doorknob. Julian consulted me with a plan daily and showed up ready to work. He was tidy and peaceful to be around. He was also easy to text about the project and what we should do next. He is a highly skilled craftsman and I will continue to hire him for projects. I can't recommend him enough!"See more

Michael C. says, "Building an 800 sqft detached ADU with Barcci Builders was a fantastic decision. From the initial proposal to the final touches, their professionalism and expertise were evident. The team worked diligently, adhering to the timeline and budget, which was greatly appreciated. The quality of construction is excellent, with every detail carefully considered and executed. Bar and his team provided invaluable advice and support throughout the process, making a potentially daunting project manageable and exciting. Their policy of supplying rough materials while we chose the finish materials suited our needs perfectly, allowing us to customize the ADU to our liking."See more

Erika Ashley B. says, "We’ve had at least 5 estimates before we decided to go with Bark and Build Builders. One of the reasons we chose them was because we felt comfortable with Mike and Miki from the initial on-site meeting.   This is our first major renovation project covering the kitchen and bathroom and we had a lot of questions. Mike can take a long time answering our questions, but he does his best in responding given he has other clients as well.   Preparations can be OVERWHELMING…from the meetings, choosing the design, materials, changes in plan, etc., but Mike provided guidance along the way.   Fast forward to the bathroom and kitchen renovation – Mike and the team made our vision a reality. Our view was taken into consideration, appropriate design suggestions were made catering to the vision we wanted. Surprises happened along the way, but we were able proceed accordingly. Changes to the original design and plan were happening in relative frequency but the flexibility of the team made a tremendous impact.    It would be misleading to say we did not have any problem during this process, but there were some great resolutions. There is room for improvement.   Overall, a great experience for us. We are more than satisfied with the outcome. We love our new bathroom and kitchen! We highly recommend Bark and Build Builders.   Tips for others: * Be vocal, * Ask questions, * Be involved in the process because once it’s done, it can be tricky to work around it, * Follow up if needed, * and ask more questions.   Additional project: * House flooring"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.
