Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Dennis was great! My headshots for LinkedIn are amazing! We did the shoot outside, he came all the way to Lake Merritt, which was my desired location for the photo shoot. Overall would highly recommend and would work with Dennis again! 😊

We worked with Eric to shoot our engagement photos last week. It was a great experience all around. He allowed us to be creative in what and where we wanted to shoot, and really worked with us to make sure that we were happy with the shots throughout the process. Eric was very reasonably priced and had a really quick turn-around to get us our processed photos. Would definitely recommend!

To say we are obsessed with our wedding photos would be an understatement. Edeelin and her husband shot for 6 hours on our wedding day and gave us nearly 900 photos! The turnaround time on the pictures was lightning speed, I have friends who got married months before me and were still waiting on their photos by the time I had mine. A 1 hour engagement photo shoot was also included in our package, which was a great way to get familiar with her shooting style. The candid shots that Edeeline is able to get are unreal, I just LOVE, love, l o v e, the angles and the lighting. During the ceremony, I didn’t even notice they were shooting, which kept the intimate feeling we were going for. And the cherry on top is that her price did not break the bank. I would hire Labra Photography again in a heartbeat.

It was such a pleasure working with Jasmeet! I needed some artsy headshots for my book, and my partner needed some more traditional LinkedIn headshots: Jasmeet was able to get both of those done for us in a single session, and the photos came out beautifully. During the shoot, Jasmeet was punctual, knowledgable and super easy to work with. We loved the photos we got out of the session, and the price is an extremely good deal (from a single shoot we got dozens of headshots and some lovely couples photos!). I would highly recommend Jasmeet to anyone who is looking for a photographer, and already recommended him to a friend.

Cindy was amazing. She was very professional and she has a great eye. It was raining the day we were scheduled to shoot and Cindy offered to come back another day. When we decided to shoot anyways, Cindy was able to find a beautiful indoor backdrop for our photos. I have 4 children and she was wonderful with all the children - was able to make them all smile! We will definitely call Cindy again when we need family photos!

I was anxious about driving to the city and having this photo shoot done. I was a little uptight, but needed the shots for branding. Dennis was relaxed and chill, took his time and encouraged me to just be myself. He's very good at giving simple directives to get the best angles, etc. Dennis really has an eye for the work he does. I highly recommend him and will definitely employ his services again whenever I am in need of photographs for my real estate business.

The end product was exactly what we were looking for! We enlisted Godoy Shots to do a shoot for a national nonprofit education organization to build our library of diverse and high quality promotional photos. Despite limitations in lighting and subjects, Nabor produced high quality, professional, and dynamic photos to fit with our brand character and personality. Nabor was easy to work with, flexible, took direction really well, and offered a great price. He is enthusiastic and aims to please. We would, with out a doubt, use Godoy Shots again.

My fiancé and I were so nervous about taking engagement photos, but Qamara from the introduction to sending us the final photos put us both at ease. She brought ideas, and encouraged us to share our own vision about what we wanted in our photoshoot. She really centered us in the process and made the whole thing feel flawless. The pictures came out amazing, and reflected who we are as real people while showcasing our love and excitement for our engagement. She was responsive, prepared (even when we showed up to the shoot really late!), and just a good person to work with. We'll definitely use her services again in the future and wholeheartedly recommend using her photography services. Thanks again, Qamara!
