Our new rental home warranty plumbing coverage does not include tile work, but the plumber they dispatched needs a bigger opening behind the mixer on the tile shower wall to confirm the source of the leak. I hired Arisel from AA Cardenas Construction to help me with the tile work. I would have hired him for the plumbing work itself if I had known him earlier and had got to choose my own technician under warranty. From the get-go responding to my Thumbtack request for quote to finishing the job, Arisel had been very responsive, professional, friendly, punctual and helpful. The job was beautifully done! While I was writing the check, knowing the job is being contracted to Home Warranty company Arisel still took the initiative to inspect the leak checking the ceiling downstairs and share with me what he thought the problem might be. With him pointing out, I was convinced that he was spot on! Arisel is apparently a hard working, honest and friendly young man! I will definitely hire him again for future jobs. I highly recommend Arisel.

Walter and his crew are one of the best contractors that we have hired on a home project and their estimate was very reasonable. They did an absolutely beautiful job on building our retaining wall and were hard working and patient in every detail. He is very honest and dependable and did not try and take any short-cuts on the job or substitute for cheaper materials. Throughout the process, his crew was very friendly and cooperative and made sure from the beginning that we were happy with everything. They also made sure to clean up the yard after completing the job. We are very happy with their work and will use them again for other projects. I would highly recommend Walter and his crew to anyone looking to hire a great landscaping contractor.

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

Eli and his team completed my bathroom and roof in 1 week. It was superb! There were 5 guys there every day all day, and they were great. Recommend to anyone looking for quality work in quality time. Will use for my next project which is my kitchen, painting and flooring throughout and I am looking forward to working with them again next month.

Todd did a couple of little projects such as installing new fixtures in the bathroom shower, under the bathroom sink fixtures, and water line into the refrigerator. This allowed me to evaluate his work for future bigger projects. Todd was timely, professional, and did a great job. I was very happy with his work.

In twenty years of home ownership, this might just be my first *purely* positive experience with a major remodel. I can recommend Ruben and his team without reservation. Ruben took my yard from dirt with a few clumps of remaining weeds, to a lovely, useable space -- with a gorgeous paver patio; a lawn for dogs and kids to play in; a small area of artificial grass for the "dog bathroom;" an area ready for raised garden beds; a green screen of wax myrtle; and along two sides of the yard, a beautiful bed of hardy, colorful, low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants. He installed a couple of sprinklers in the lawn and a nice drip system in the planted area. Throughout the process, Ruben had ideas of his own but was very willing to listen -- and best of all, he used what he heard to inform his own thinking, so the ideas he offered were increasingly tailored to what he'd learned of my taste and needs. Ruben's prices are not cheap, but they are fair and clear, with no surprises. And as a bonus, he's just the nicest guy you'll ever meet, as are the men who work for him. One of them is a good carpenter, and fixed a gate that wasn't swinging properly just because he could and he knew I'd like it. I really cannot recommend this company highly enough. They offer a rare combination of integrity, expertise, and just plain niceness.

i had a small 20 square foot bathroom to tile. I wanted large format (12x24 tile) which resulted in the job needing many cuts. Chris took on the job and was very professional, punctual, and thorough- values that are hard to come by these days with most people out there. You can trust that Chris will be there when he says he will and that he will get the job done to your satisfaction. My tiles look great and i would highly recommend Chris. I will definitely hire him again should i need any more work in the future.

I ended up interviewing 10 different contractors for our exterior siding job because there were so many different opinions on what needed to be done and how best to do it. I'm so glad that we ended up going with Kris and his team. Great communication throughout, incredibly high quality of workmanship on a very difficult job (it is an older house that hasn't been maintained very well before we bought it). I really appreciated Kris' attention to detail and letting us know what was going on throughout the 6 week long process. Also did a great job working with the county inspector, which is never an easy process. These guys are pros - won't hesitate to hire them again for our next house project!

I hired Bay Wide Hauling to clear out a retail space, which included removing an old linoleum tile floor, a half wall, and a large awning, as well as hauling away old carpet and debris. They showed up on time, did a great job, as well as they were friendly and polite. I believe the cost for the scope of work performed was very fair. Without a doubt, I will hire them again!

If there were a sixth star, I would award it to Osbaldo. This is a bit of a late review as the project was completed prior to Thanksgiving 2014. We had carpeting, tile, and baseboard removed. New tile was laid in the kitchen and half bath. Hardwood flooring and 5 1/4" baseboard were installed in the family room. Moreover, a custom hearth, mantel, and stone facade were added to the fireplace. The result was excellent and we are still pleased with the craftsmanship. We will be hiring Osbaldo again for additional projects.

C&D tile saved our lives!!! I cannot write enough good things about this company and workers. The job was done efficiently, at a very fair prices, with no impact to our lives. The job was a small bathroom tile job in a tenant unit. C&D had to remove the floor vanity and toilet to complete 3 day however every night the bathroom was in working order so that my tenants did not have to move out. The work was high quality and the floor and all details look amazing. I would not hesitate to hire C& D again.

Victor ended up helping me redo a bathroom including partial flooring, installing a shower door and new toilet, new sink cabinet, removing the large mirror and repainting the wall. He was heoric in locating and fixing the main into the apartment unit, situated deepin the garage with no map. Victor also removed all the old items and took them to the dumpster, with a nice cleanup, all at a reasonable price. I would recommend Victor to anyone who needs help in bathroom work, as well.

I contacted Chuck for my mom, she doesn't go online, and she was very pleased with the outcome. I don't know what she paid for the work, otherwise I may have clicked "value" as well. I think she said it was similar to some other quotes she had gotten. What was not similar though, and what my mom was very happy about was the responsiveness, follow through, and results that she received from Chuck and his crew. Months ago, my mom had 2 or 3 estimates given to her but for some reason or another those contractors did not follow through. Chuck was very responsive with call backs and an estimate, and began the project quickly thereafter. His crew was always prompt, continuously working, and each day's clean up at the end was perfect - they very considerate how they left the area. One thing that may be good to mention for those reading this and looking for a contractor, is that my mother and I felt comfortable and safe with them in the house at times we had to leave for work. My mother is older and I am very cautious and skeptical of people in general, but we both quickly noticed that Chuck and each of his crew that showed up were straight forward, easy going and courteous at all times, so they were easy to be around. As for the bathroom remodel, my mom loves it! Even when there was a snag for a second they helped my mom through it and got her to the new bathroom she's been wanting for years--- thanks Chuck! Mike is a great contractor, adding a second bathroom with ceramic tile steam shower and tankless hot water in about 6-8 weeks. He does excellent work (the shower glass contractor commented on the great tile work). He sets expectations, listens/explains well, is sensitive in delivering news that will require a change in plan, and has multiple suggestions for changes so there are informed choices. He and his crew clean up at the end of each day, and were all pleasant to be around. I have two dogs and was able to work out a plan to keep the dogs calm and out of the way; it helped that the crew are dog-friendly. I am in the planning stages of the next project I'd like to propose to Mike.

Angel really came through for my clients. I'm a real estate agent and I have two listings that were in need of updating their bathroom showers, tub and one countertop. Angel updated all three bathrooms and kitchen countertop in one day. He came through for my company. He will be the first person I call whenever I need tile grout updating. I'm 100% satisfied by price and his work. Angel was easy going and focused on me being satisfied by his work. Thanks again Angel!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
