Hired Jose to complete a fabric patio cover installation. He was awesome!! Came to the house to review the job, gave me a reasonable quote, and completed the job the following week. His work was excellent and quick, and although we were short material to complete, he offered to return when we get the additional material to finish up the job. Thank you so much for the excellent experience!!

Thank you Jovani and Master ACR Glass. I needed someone to determine the extent of repair on over 100 windows on our building. Jovani replied quickly and came up with a plan to identify why water was leaking in numerous windows whenever it rained. Jovani remove several windows with frames out of the wall. He explained what was happening, provided pictures, made the repair, tested the windows with water, before billing me. The cost was as stated. Jovani then gave me a very fair estimate to repair all the windows. I said do it, they did it, it rained, and there were no leaks anywhere. Yes! This guy is the real deal. I am more than pleased with this repair from A to Z. Thanks Jovani! Kenny The Shoreline Church

DM painting saved the day! Managing a water restoration project from 400 miles away, I discovered there was a fair amount of drywall to be done at 3 pm on a Tuesday afternoon that would stall our flooring install the next day. Went on thumbtack, and had DM out there that same night. Got the job done and did a great job. Donaldo is reliable, conscientious, and hardworking. Two thumbs up!!! Thanks so much!!!!

Hugh is a true expert. He is very affordable and really cares about doing the job right. We needed two walls repaired and painted for tv mount damage and when he was done you could not tell that there was ever a tv there. He also repaired some wall damage from our baby gates and did an excellent job with that. So far I've had great experiences finding professionals on thumbtack. You won't be disapointed with Hugh's work!

I am a journeyman carpenter and I bought an aluminum single hung window for my home. My back went out and I was unable to install the window. I used thumbtack services to find help. Nick (Left Coast Windows) installed the window at a very reasonable price. He is friendly, courteous and respectful. He does clean thorough work from the caulking to the trim to setting the window nice and square! I would hire him again if need be and will recommend him to everyone and anyone that needs windows installed. Thanks Nick, you're the best!

I ordered 2 windows that were damaged on a fire, the windows are beautiful , from the day I signed the contract they told me was going to take 2 weeks and it took 2 months to get them and when they were ready to install they had the wrong windows so was postponed for 5 more days ( the maker company is in another state). Once they had the right windows,it only took less than hour to install them., they did a good job not messy. Everything was fine except the turn around time. I'll give 4.5 stars:)

So happy! Don’t miss doing business with this company. A total pro, Chuck Dorgan is as honest and trustworthy as they come and has the knowledge and skills in sliding door installation. He and his crew removed my old sliding door and installed a new Pella sliding door within a matter of hours last Saturday, the next day Mr. Dorgan completed the job with a beautiful wood frame around my new sliding door on the inside of my house and adjusted the sliding door and screen so they slide beautifully!! And I might add, he left the work area clean and spotless once he was done. On the outside, his crew did a great job on patching the stucco around the new door. I highly recommend this company for your windows and door replacements. Chuck Dorgan cares about customers, and will recommend the best solution for a fair price without sacrificing quality! Thank you to Dorgan's Remodeling Company for a great and superb job! I love my new sliding door! Peggy H.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
