Came on time. Clean and professional personality. He has done a lot for me for his two different visits as a new homeowner. I made a list what I needed to be done and he performed all the required work. He went to the Hardware Store and shopped for the best materials for me. He assembled; added shelves, porch lights, grab bars; added more lightning in the garage; put up a new shower door, just name all the things you want and he will fix/repair at reasonable cost. No regret. My dad was also retired MCB 4 Seabee and he did a lot of mprovements at their house. When I saw Mr. Fred on the website, I chose him because of his experience and you only those military (Seabee can do!) . You will be happy that you hire him, Mr. Fred.

I had a porch swing built, painted and hung and Paul did an amazing job. He was on time, friendly and charged less than his estimate. I love my swing and will definitely hire them again!

I recently had my porch and deck remodeled by Monterrozo Construction and they did a wonderful job. I feel like the cost was competitive and the service as excellent. I can now enjoy my deck especially after work at night, where I am able to lounge.

I have known Paul for years and he is the only person we trust for our handyman needs. He is not only reasonably priced and knowledgeable, but he can fix/build/reorganize almost anything. Just to name a few projects: built a mounting block for my 17 hh horse, installed a Murphy bed plus custom headboard he designed, constructed a screen porch, exchanged countless toilets, helped me move four times, and organized my house/garage on numerous occasions. He is on time, professional, and a wonderful person to keep in your back pocket for your big or small projects.

Philip was awesome! He arrived and was very detailed in his explanation of how to fix our front porch light. We had been left with a mess from the previous home owners. Philip not only fixed the light but rewired an existing outlet that was previously installed incorrectly. He explained everything and walked me through the process. We plan to use Appleton Electric again and again.

Mr. Love was great. He installed a 3 way timmer switch for my porch light. He was quick and clean. I would recommend him. I have also used him in the past for my hardwood floor and base board and it included painting.

Picture Perfect has done several jobs for me, including tiling my bathroom floor, putting up decorative lattice fencing and porch railing, installing sprinkler system. All work was completed timely and in a most professional manner. Pricing was competitive and estimates were accurate. Justin is great to deal with and a neat worker. I would recommend his service highly. C. Brandt - Burbank

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
