The kids at my daughter's 5th birthday party loved it. He brought little music shakers for all the kids so they felt like they were in a band. And great music to listen to as you're eating and hanging out with friends. Thanks Tucker

Doc Rock-It , Rocks they play all over Southern California. I went to see them at Alpine Village a few weeks ago, and I had a fantastic time. When they sing, The Bird by Morris Day, every body hit the floor, they not only sing the song but they show you how to do the dance, it was so much fun. Like I said they Rock. If you want a great Rock and Roll band I would hire them every time.

My daughter is a professional singer with her own band, and also works as part of a duo. She started asking me at some point to come and play with her band sometimes, and I decided I'd better take some lessons because I felt utterly unprepared. And I WANT to play some gigs with her. Years before, I had taken a guitar class with the Parks and Recreation Department of Long Beach, and Kipp was the instructor. I liked how she used humor to keep us entertained while she crammed a ton of information into our heads and drilled us on playing technique. I learned so much from her in the five short weeks of that session that when I thought about taking private lessons, she immediately came to mind. I was able to track her down, and she's been putting me through my paces. At first, she had me focusing on playing chords and learning standard chord progressions in different keys. She's often asked me to write out chord charts for different pieces of music so I'm comfortable with reading charts. She wants me to be so familiar with those kinds of common progressions that when I play with my daughter's band, I' be able to handle anything they throw at me. We've also worked on rhythm and groove so I can easily complement whatever the other musicians are playing, and actually ADD something musical to the songs. Now she's started to drill me on scales and melodies. She made me play a solo last week, saying: "This is where it begins -- might as well get started!" I've gone way farther with Kipp's guidance than I would have ever gone on my own.

Reckless was the host band for my wife's recent surprise birthday party. They were professional in every way. Kim was always responsive to texts and emails as the date got closer. On the night of the event they were an absolute pleasure. So many of the attendees were impressed with their set list and musicality. I would highly recommend them as a classic rock cover band.

Our university student organization booked Noel and his group on two separate occasions for a fundraising event as well as a banquet dinner. Noel was responsive and flexible with our needs, and we heard numerous compliments throughout the entirety of both evenings on the music provided by the band. We were immediately impressed by his professionalism and ability to accommodate all of our requests. His musical selections set the perfect ambiance for both evenings, and I would not hesitate to recommend or book him and his group again in the future.

Masatoshi played with his trio for my wedding reception and I couldn't have asked for a better band to play. He was flexible to the weather (it was a rainy reception!), finding a dry place to set up, the rain did not stop them! They really set the mood, creating a jovial and social ambiance. They played while guests were eating and talking and really captured our guests with their talented musicality and and stunning performance. Thank you so much for being a part of a memorable day!

Jonah has been tutoring my son on the trombone for 4 years. My son has made great progress, joined a jazz band, and is inspired by Jonah's talent to practice which is key! Jonah is always a pleasure to work with and has very fair rates. He is also easy to comminicate with and punctual, hence the 5 stars.

I first heard CJ and the Palmer Jazz Band performing at a friend's birthday party. I am not a big blues fan, but I was so intrigued by their sound, and stage presence, that I texted a friend and sent her a picture of them performing. They were/are awesome. I later hired the band to perform at that friends surprise party. She was speechless, we all, danced, cheered, and sang with the band. We all had the best time. Mr. Palmer and the band are timely, helpful, entertaining, friendly, accomodating, talented and professional. My friends and I love listening to, singing along with and dancing to their music. CJ makes it even more engaging as he serenades the crowd while playing his saxaphone.

I went into their studio to simply lay down a few guitar ideas for some songs I was writing. I mentioned how I heard drum parts in my head to go with my guitars but I don't play drums. The audio engineer suggested I "beat box" my drum ideas and he tracked exactly what I had in mind. I came back home with a legit sounding demo to show my peers in hopes of forming a band. Overall great experience. Would definitely recommend. Great atmosphere, good time!

Very skillful with his guitar and has a very accurate ear, which is very important when you play in a band. He has been teaching me and my friend for two years on a weekly basis, focusing on how to play together in a band. I definitely recommend him to anyone who really wants to improve. He does not appreciate when you come without practicing the current song a little bit at home

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
