At the age of 11, she began occasionally stumbling and falling down. Kate's mom took her to a specialist where she was later diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. The disease rapidly progressed to a point where by the age of 14, she was permanently wheelchair bound. Being confined to a wheelchair for life at such an early age would have caused many others to spiral into depression and give up.
Many expected this to happen, which drove her even harder to achieve more and to succeed in school and business all the while helping people along the way. She credits her positive, go-for-it attitude and her inner strength from watching her single mother raise three children alone, with two having special needs.
In 2000, Ms. Morena earned her bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in both communications and geography. Her passion for helping the underprivileged led her to the helm of inner-city diversity programs and student ambassador seminars. She then achieved a Master of Fine Arts in film and social change from Sonoma State University.
