Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a cheap DJ?

To find a cheap or affordable DJ for your party or wedding, search for local DJs near you and ask for free cost estimates from several of them. While some DJ profiles may provide an automatically generated starting cost, it’s important to contact the DJ to get an idea of how much your particular request will cost. This also gives you the opportunity to ask them other important questions and make sure you are a good fit.

How much is a DJ?

When you hire a local DJ, expect to pay roughly between $300 and $800. But be aware that the actual price will vary based on several factors, including the length of the DJ’s set and how much of a presence they need to be. Larger venues can drive up the cost, as this requires more equipment, soundchecking and setup. Adding extras like confetti, fog, light shows and black lights also adds to the cost.

How do you book a DJ for a party?

To book a party DJ, start by comparing local pros in your area. Check out their ratings and reviews to find out:

  • Are they professional?
  • Do they show up on time to set up for the party?
  • Do they know how to feel the energy in the room and adjust the music accordingly?
  • Are they friendly to guests and take song requests?
  • Do they specialize in the genres you want (pop, Top 40, hip-hop, etc.)?
  • Do they have experience playing at your type of event (weddings, birthday parties, etc.)?

Whenever possible, watch videos of their performances.

Your last step is to contact three to five different DJs near you to ask them questions and get price quotes.

DJ George came to my company's holiday party, and did an outstanding job! He kept the music flowing and played what we requested! He was very polite and professional! He came to the venue early to make sure all of his equipment was set up, and by the time my coworkers and I arrived, he already had music playing. He played music non-stop throughout the night, and brought extras microphones for my bosses to be able to give their announcements/speeches! I recommend DJ George to anyone who is looking for a very professional DJ, who's willing to take music suggestions and create a fun environment for all of your guests! Thanks again, George!

DJ Noel provided DJ services for our wedding and reception in our backyard. He was fabulous. Everyone loved the music, and he surprised us with some cool special effects. He provided music from 4:30 to 11:00, took requests, and we provided him with a play and do not play list. He was on time, and even played a little past 11. Nothing went wrong, although we did have to supply a light for him which was a little unexpected.

I'm going to try to be as unemotional in my review as possible. As a summery, if you need a DJ just for a party to get people dancing then he would be great for that, BUT DO NOT HIRE FOR WEDDING!! I had a meeting with Jamaal and Jeff early on in the planning and then again 1 week before my wedding. They seemed to understand everything I wanted and I was very confident. My wedding was scheduled to start at 5pm and at 4:57 my officiant told the DJ everyone was ready so we were actually going to start on time. He was told in response, "Oh I guess I should get dressed and set up the speakers." My wedding started 20 minutes late because we were waiting for the DJ. Next, for the song I walk down the aisle to I had discussed in detail that it has a long intro I dont like and would like to start the song 1:02 in and he said before hand no problem. Actual ceremony, he started it from the begining forgetting my request. Next, My mother in law wanted 10 seconds of a youtube video to play before the mother son dance started. He played the WHOLE video until someone when up to him and told him to stop and play the song. On several occasions i had to be asked questions about things I had reviewed in details and written out and emailed to them both. Once the dancing part started everyone had a great time and the mix was good. He can mix the music well but did not do a good job with with specific requests or with being the MC and leading the wedding along. Nice guys but they should stick to parties and not wedding that have so many specific requests.

It was my parents’ 80th and 78th birthday party and we didn’t have a clear agenda of the types of music to play throughout the 5-hour party, but Thomas was great in playing just the right genres of music at each given moment. He even helped with the musical eggplant game (like musical chairs). He played the requested birthday songs when I asked him to so timing was all good. He went with the flow in terms of music and everybody had a blast. His price was very reasonable, too! I would hire him again for future parties. Thanks, DJ Thomas!
