My name is Christa Kropp. I'm the Program Chair for the Orange County Philharmonic Society Town and Country Committee. Summer played for 50 minutes without stop. She gave new meaning to the word "medley". Her playing, apart from flawless technique, was filled with great emotions that went right to one's soul and lingered for hours. She is a true artist! The audience was dazzled showing their appreciation with an extensive standing ovation. It was a dreamy performance that will not soon be forgotten by anyone in attendance. I am so pleased to have found her. Love to have her play for us again sometime in the future. She is such a warmhearted lovely person with stunning looks. Christa.

I originally wanted to buy a kazoo. When I went into The Horn Guys in Lakewood, CA (they sell brass instruments), I discovered that Kipp Kahlia was teaching guitar and vocals there. I decided to sign up for some lessons. I’m a singer and a songwriter, and I wanted to improve my vocals, grow as a songwriter, and become more versatile on the guitar. Kipp worked with me on all fronts. As a songwriter, I’m more aware of rhyme schemes that work without being cheesy. I’m also way more deliberate about creating my melodies, and making them hold together better. And I write phrases that are rhythmically compatible. As a singer, Kipp called me out on enunciation -- she said it was frustrating to hear only parts of the stories I was telling. My words were being lost because I wasn’t singing them clearly enough for them to be understood. She also worked with me on learning to support my notes with solid breathing technique. We worked on tightening up my pitch -- I notice it faster now when I sing a little off-key, so I can fix it faster. And we worked on my range. Now, when I sing high notes, they’re strong and solid instead of being kind of hesitant like they were before. As a guitarist, I can happily say that I can now play in any key I want to. We worked through bar chords and how to use them, and have started working on jazz chords. Kipp also showed me some ways to come up with different strumming patterns so that my songs all sound different rhythmically. Since I’m a solo performer, that was really important. I can’t rely on a different drum parts or bass parts to make my songs have musical variety. I’ve improved a lot as a musician under Kipp’s guidance.

AY Musik performed at our Christmas party for youth in south KC. Their passion for music and zest for life are contagious. Positive message, professionalism and fun are a tough trio to come by these days. They excelled at all three! Thank you AY!

Great trio, was ahead of schedule all set up and ready to go before the event. The evening with wives and some children present was enjoyed by all. The mix and volume were great to be able to hear the music and still be able to have a conversation. Good Job! Thank you

Mariachi Trio was very professional and cooperative with the planning considering that they were gonna have to walk in and surprise my father singing Las Mananitas. They drove a long way to celebrate my father bday. They stood out in the cold weather with a smile on their face and singing away. They were on time and Rodrigo is really easy to get a hold of and replies to any questions/concerns via email in a timely manner. I would give them five stars and would definitely recommend them for your special event. I'm sure that you wont be dissatisfied. They had a variety of selections for songs and they all had great voices. Its my first time contracting a Mariachi and because I had a good experience I am considering doing it again.

Masatoshi played with his trio for my wedding reception and I couldn't have asked for a better band to play. He was flexible to the weather (it was a rainy reception!), finding a dry place to set up, the rain did not stop them! They really set the mood, creating a jovial and social ambiance. They played while guests were eating and talking and really captured our guests with their talented musicality and and stunning performance. Thank you so much for being a part of a memorable day!

As a rookie guitar player I was looking for my first teacher. Andrew provided a good first look about the basics of guitar playing. He helped me make notes and find effective way to practice on my own. Tought me my first scales and the importance of "Neck knowledge," knowing your basic strings and cords. Showed me how to tune and string a guitar. Very knowledgeable about the history and mechanics of many guitars. Very patient as a teacher and always happy to review

My wife and I hired Anthony to provide ceremony music for our wedding in April 2016. Anthony arrived early with his other musicians to set up, get situated, sound check, etc. This was great because it was just one more thing that we didn't have to worry about on our big day! I actually had a specific folk song that I wanted played during the ceremony that I thought would sound very pretty as part of a string trio that we envisioned. Not only did Anthony agree to play the song, but he personally composed the parts for both the violin and cello that accompanied his flute playing. I will never forget that moment, the music calming my nerves during one of the most memorable moments of my life. He also agreed to another unconventional (for a string trio, anyway) pop rock song for our recessional that had my wife and me bouncing back down the aisle!!! We can't recommend Anthony enough. He is a top-notch professional musician and a joy to work with!!! Cheers, Mel & Mark

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
