I'm super-pleased with the work that Jose-David did on the installation of an overhead light for me. The room had no light fixture and required setting a new light box in the ceiling, cutting into and repairing drywall, and installing the chandelier. Jose-David and his team arrived on time, and immediately put me at ease because they covered everything with plastic or dropcloths. They worked with me to make sure the light was positioned exactly as they wanted it, and even went out to buy paint to match my ceiling exactly. Now that the work is done the light looks beautiful, the room is clean, and it's impossible to tell that the wall was even cut into. All for a very reasonable price and with no hassle to schedule the appt. I have already set up another appt. to have the team do another project!

I called Jose after i saw his pictures and cabinetry work on his profile page. i decided to change my request and had him build a rock wall in lieu of an entertainment center. He did multiple visits, to get measurements and requirements and to make sure he did the project right. The first part of my project was a rock wall in lieu of doing cabinets for an entertainment center. showed him what i wanted, he brought me samples and started the work the week after. It took him a day to complete the work, the wall looks gorgeous and those who have seen it, just love it. The TV mount was slightly crooked after we mounted the TV. He was quick to fix the issue. Took less than 2 mintues and we got the TV on straight and we were good to go after completion. Its been 4 days, and i still love the look of it. We will be starting our next phase with the LOFT coming up in a few weeks and painting right after. Give him a call, you will like his work and upfront pricing.

Hello, I needed a new 3ft high and 35 ft long retaining wall. I bought the keystone stack able blocks and Juan was able to complete that wall in one day. I needed the wall for support of the new fence that would be put up. That following Saturday Juan and his work partner put up the fence in one day as well. They completed the job fast, it was amazing. Juan is very reliable, very nice and offers a fair price. I will definitely use Juan for any major projects I can't handle in the future. I also referred Juan to my parents since they need some work done too. Definitely hire Juan and you will have a peace of mind that the work will get done fast and right. Thanks Juan!

Hired Larry to patch stucco along the foundation, and to cap a block wall. He did the work as requested at a fair price, with little mess to clean up. Color was not exact (trying to match 10-year-old stucco), but he went to the extra effort to spray dye to blend in the work, which helped. Appreciated him enough that we also hired him to complete a wall texturing job another contractor on Thumbtack was ill-equipped to perform. He did adequately on that work, but worked with us to ultimately get us a satisfactory product. Nice to work with. Thanks, Larry!

Contemporary Design Builders did home remodeling for me a year ago. It was a 15-year old house and the space was not so well designed. I bought it for flipping. The remodeling crew in Contemporary Design Builders removed the walls and created more space in the living room. Then they installed a new kitchen, the new wooden floor, and repainted the wall. It was a huge amount of work. Luckily the project manager made sure everything was under control and I didn't get unexpected trouble. I sold the house with a higher price than the amount I paid and the remodeling fees. I really wanna thank Contemporary Design Builders for helping me remodel the house. I made the right choice.

Antonio was hired to patch, match texture & paint a 2.5 X 4 ft hole in a wall in my parents home in Spring Valley. After leaving a message for Antonio, he returned the call quickly and worked with our schedule. He kept us informed on his availability, showed up on time @4pm, and worked until 7pm. The quality of Antonio's work was very high and his rates were reasonable. I would recommend him to family and friends.

Hyde Handcraft was one of the most professional, hard working and honest contractors I have ever worked with! When considering which contractor to hire I had multiple bids. Hyde gave a very fair bid but was actually not the cheapest. I decided to use them based on the other reviews on Thumbtack. I am so glad I did! They always showed up when they said they were going to, or they would give plenty of notice to a change in time. They moved furniture carefully and cleaned up every space cleaner than it was before! They were so kind to our kids always talking to them and never annoyed at the constant questions from our 2 year old :). They put so much pride in their work...while installing all of our crown molding it would have been easy to not work with the crooked wall. Yet they spent way more time than they planned making it look perfect! They also installed exterior doors for us and they did an amazing job! I will definitely be using Hyde Handcraft again for any other work I need done and I highly recommend them to anybody who wants a fair price, professional contractors and outstanding quality. Josiah

I am new to US and this is for the first time I am posting a review. We bought a new house in university city. I didn’t like the popcorn ceilings on the roof. I wanted to remove the popcorn ceiling and make it smooth. I removed the popcorn ceilings myself for the whole home that is around 1000 sq ft. In the master bedroom, I completed mud, sand, prime and paint. But I was not satisfied with the result in getting a really smooth ceilings and it was overwhelming for me. I found The happy painter from Thumbtack and we hired them for getting a smooth ceilings. They took 5 days to do the whole job. I am extremely satisfied with their job. We got back a smooth ceiling as expected. They also fixed all sorts of small blunders that I made earlier. A small crack reappeared near the fireplace. Dean is kind enough to point out that he did everything he could to prevent it. He also gave us his word to come back anytime we need him. Dean is humble, gentle and trustworthy. Kim is also very helpful. She gave me more ideas over remodeling the walls and fireplace. I would highly recommend the happy painter. I hope they continue to excel in their job in future.

We ended up having Jason come fill in a door frame for us, and then apply a matching texture to the rest of the wall. He was very professional, gave us a great rate, and overall went above and beyond during the project. We (the customers) had a slight misunderstanding about the scope of the project (even though he provided a clearly written estimate), but he was able to pivot quickly and tackle the added work without much hesitation, and again, with a great rate. He and his guy worked efficiently and cleanly, getting the project done in less than half a day. Would definitely re-hire him again!

I had some miscellaneous outdoor work I contracted with this company including tree removal, demo and masonry wall repair/infill. Jason was punctual and professional. We communicated before the contract was carried out, during, and at close out. He was clear and upfront about cost issues. The cost was fairly priced as well as the add services. My advice as a client is to be clear and upfront if you have issues or questions. Most things can be resolved with your contractor if you keep communication lines open. You can always say no or ask them to fix the work if it is not the agreed upon expectations.

Edgar was great to work with. Very polite and professional. Did an outstanding job on my damaged (old house) plaster/lat interior wall which is no easy fix. He even did a few extra small repairs on adjacent walls and ceilings on the fly. The rooms were left spotless and time to complete the work was impressive. I would definitely hire SGP on my next job and you should too. Will (Ocean Beach)

Jaime came out quickly and provided a reasonable bid for a short stretch of fence. I wasn’t sure what color to do for the fence, as the rest of our yard fence is either brick/ rock or iron. Jaime identified a stained gate and suggested that we stain the fence to match - great idea! He created a cedar fence to fill gaps where we couldn’t finish the brick wall. The fence was completed in a day, which was awesome because my dogs had been locked in for a couple of weeks while the brick wall was being built. Jaime was on time, communicated well, listened to my requests, and completed the work on time. He left the site neater than when he began. Jaime has extensive experience in concrete work. Definitely call him if you have a concrete job, as well. The last two days, Jaime has been working on my neighbor’s gate! They were so impressed with him they hired him on the spot when they say the work he did for me.

Jesus answered me back within minutes when I requested a quote. He messaged me with questions and came out promptly. He was actually early. He did an excellent job installing a new ceiling fan. He climbed in the attic to wire it and put a new wall switch exactly where we wanted it. I have had a hard time finding professionals that do a good job and actually show up. Jesus will be doing another job for me next week. I would definitely recommend this company.

Marathon is the only company I trust to work on my 2 homes. They remodeled my out dated 3 bed/1 bath house and turned it into a beautiful and spacious 3 bed/2 bath. They up graded my galley kitchen and turned it into a gorgeous and spacious open kitchen. They added a much needed bathroom, turned my very small living room into a great room, gave me functional closets, extra storage space and got rid of that unsightly popcorn ceiling. Isaac worked with me hand-in-hand from start to finish and insured I was happy with the progress on my house. He did excellent work from design, to demolition, to rebuilding. He did everything from plumbing, electrical, windows/doors, drywall, flooring, paint (indoors and out), fixtures.....and more. Marathon completed the remodel on time, went above and beyond, and did it at a very good price. It is rare to find an honest, trust worthy, company that takes pride in their work. Well, Marathon is it and I couldn't have asked for a better contractor. Thank you Marathon!

Hugh did a great job installing my baseboards. Many pain-staking hours went into completing the job and he clearly took pride in his work. Instead of just throwing the base on the job, he took the extra time to level the wall so it would look perfect instead of just OK. Really happy with the overall job and would highly recommend him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
