Fast super fast response. Very detailed explanation of what exactly was found we were also provided video / visual of the issue. Originally thought there was just a blockage in the main line, after further inspection with camera it was found that main line needed to be replaced. This was done fast, professionally, and everything was cleaned up as new when they were finished. Detailed invoice received with pictures of project and detailed explanation of problem and repair. Repair included 25 year warranty. Would definitely use and recommend Manny and his company again.

I have to say hiring Nima for some electrical repair and installation was one of the best ideas possible. He did an absolutely phenomenal job from beginning to end. I had personally interviewed seven other electricians to install floodlights motion detectors and a beam for home. Nima responded immediately, professionally, detailed in his process and procedure, and came in well below any of the other estimate. His work was flawless. I couldn't be happier and I promise if you hire him you will not be disappointed. He is a decent good man who does fantastic work for a low cost.

Excellent experience with Juan. He was very responsive, punctual, quickly diagnosed the issue (I had a leak in my sprinkler system), and provided me a fair quote for the work to repair. He repaired the same day. I'll be using him on all future plumbing jobs I have. I strongly recommend.

This technician was so diligent I had a crash after my computer installed new updates. It was a mess to figure out. He came and worked on it for 3 days. He wouldn't take any money until he repaired the problem. I was so impressed with his knowledge about computers. He said he would have to reinstall windows 7. I didn't have the lic. # until I contacted the person who put the program in. When we finally got the # Alexey was able to repair my computer. I would highly recommend him to fix any computer. I am very grateful for the work Derrick did at our home. Derrick was professional, courteous, and very informative. He discussed what the process would be and what to expect. He repaired a door jamb and put back wood paneling back to the wall. He also repaired our sliding closet doors. Very well done! Thank you, Derrick, for your attention to details. I would recommend him.

I contacted Al's Rooter for 2 leaking shower head faucets. Some initial research shows it was time to replace the inside cartridges. I'm comfortable with general repairs around the house but this was a bigger job that was best left to a professional. Al's Service was very informative and their approach made better sense then my initial plan. The quote was reasonable and the service is great. Didn't take very long but within the estimated time of work. Very happy with the results, no leaks and new faucet handles and cartridges included in the price as quoted.

Golden Oaks Kitchen, Bath and Flooring company was our contractor to do all repairs on our home damages caused by water damage that happened to our home due to water leakage which was started from second floor bath room and flooded to 1st. floor damaging, dray walls, cabinets, laminates +++ .. at 1st. and second floors. This company started their restoration and repair works the day after we signed the contract. Their crew were very professional in their fields of repair and replacement, they were trying their best to satisfy us. Any time that we had comments for adding more repair at one area or paint the areas in a color to match other paints , they were not arguing that and wanted us to be happy with what we need and what they did for us. They were always on time and also helped us to deliver new cabinets, toilets ++++. Overall everything was done on a very smooth way, on time and the way that we wanted to be done.

Zuriel, is the best person I’ve ever had come and work on my projects. Very professional from the initial phone call, showing up on time, assessment of the project and providing constant updates to me and my sister. He had a person repair my broken water pipe, and then he drywalled the area after a few days to determine if the pipes were not leaking. Then another few days of painting and texture on the ceiling, drying and repeat. He matched the paints perfectly. Great value for the price and expertise. My schedule was chaotic and he worked around it and also with my sis to get the job completed on time. If he was running late, he sent me a text or called. I’m so pleased that I’ve walked him thru my house showing other projects. I know he is advertised as a painter but he is knowledgeable about other house maintenance projects.

I had him come to remove a ceiling fan and install a new ceiling fan and wall switch. Because did such a nice job, I had him remove and install two bath faucets one of which needed more repair than I thought. He also repaired my tub faucet which I knew needed lots of work. If I need anymore repairs, I will definitely call him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
