After visiting in meeting with a couple of other marriage counselors in the recent past I can honestly say that dr. Lake was a breath of fresh air. In searching for a marriage counselor one looks for someone who is unbiased and open to both parties man and woman; and that is exactly what we found in Dr Lake. Our first meeting proved that he was wanting to know each of us as an individual, our feelings our thoughts and what we wanted. And that is what he bases his valuation and sessions off of. Highly recommended from husband and wife. Tony C

I turned to Fawn looking for when I was in a place of feeling very devalued. I didn't like my job, and didn't know where to go, what to do, but I knew I wanted more than the status quo. I reached out to her based on her years of experience in the field. She helped me immediately to revitalize and bring me back to the amazing woman I am, she reminded me of how strong, smart and skilled I am, and that my future is vibrant and fulfilling, I have the power to make that happen. I felt so disenfranchised working in a demoralizing environment after escaping an abusive marriage and going through an extensive divorce. She helped me to snap back to the woman I am, and break out of the cycle of anxiety and lies. I'd highly recommend Fawn as a life coach. I was hugely skeptical and at the place of last resort. She helped me to snap out of the cycle of toxic thinking and go to a path of peace and self-investment, a gift of which I'm eternally grateful.

I have had 2 appointments and I can genuinely say it has helped tremendously already. I had tried a life coach in the past and it really was just a waste of time talking and explaining my life....if you want to really change and not just talk and be a victim this is the therapy and the hypnotherapist for you. He is kind and humble and really wants to help people.

Working with Alik was a really pleasant experience! I've been to psychotherapists in the past and never felt truly comfortable or I felt like maybe they weren't offering actionable items to take away after the session. But Alik really seemed to LISTEN and UNDERSTAND me, he gave me actionable tips to walk away with, I even wrote down some of his words of wisdom on a sheet of paper so I could repeat it word for word later for someone that I'm having a current conflict with. I wanted to get his words exactly right, that's how valuable they are! He also showed me some practical breathing and meditation techniques, which were super helpful and I hadn't tried before. I am going through a current huge change in my life right now, thinking about moving countries for love. Alik listened without judgment, complete patience, and a way of looking at the entire situation more holistically. He feels not only like a competent psychotherapist, but a true confidant and wise beyond his years and training. Thank you, Alik! I'll definitely be back.

Murray was very experienced and professional with helping my husband and I get a better understanding of one another. Our relationship was strained over the course of several disagreements on key topics, but Murray helped provide us with some simple but powerful tools in order to work out our problems as a couple. His guidance and fair approach made sure we were both comfortable in speaking our mind. We were able to rebuild trust and repair the damaged foundation of our marriage at the end of Murray's counseling sessions. We would not hesitate to recommend him to a close friend if we saw they were having similar issues.

Working with Mira was felt like working with a old friend. She was so easy to talk to and open-minded and non-judgmental. Thoughts that I usually wouldn’t share with my therapist I shared with Mira with complete ease. During our work together Mira helped me think more positively, talk more positively about myself while still allowing me space for the full range of all my emotions and I saw some major change within just a short period of time. I can’t recommend Mira enough! She is truly a light and an all around amazing person. I would be truly lost without her help!

Pastor Charlie was such a blessing to us. When my friend's dad who is a pastor wasn't able to perform our ceremony we were left scrambling to find someone. Being christians and wanting a christian wedding ceremony I didn't want to just pick any officiant. I was really hesitant to find someone online but we are so thankful for Pastor Charlie. He is a wonderful man that has been married for many years and has a wife and children and grandchildren and also pastors a church. We also had pastor charlie do counseling for us. We live far away so we did skype sessions. We didn't necessarily think we needed counseling because we thought we were really good at communication and we are both on the same page with everything about life but we really learned a lot from him and there were things that came up with family and stress of wedding planning that he really helped us get through. I think it was great for us to have someone removed from our circle of family, friends, and church, to counsel us because we could really open up and share things and discuss things with him. He really got to know us and you can tell that he is doing this because it's really his heart to counsel people and not a job or for money. He has a lot of wisdom from his own life and wants couples to have the best Godly marriage possible. Our ceremony was beautiful and even though he didn't know us previous to our counseling, he took the time to get to know us and no one at the ceremony would have known we just met him a few months prior. Seemed as if we had known him for years. I would definitely recommend him. Out of all the people I researched in my area I found him to be the best honest, caring christian pastor for our ceremony.

Helena works magic on me! It's been wonderful knowing I have a go to massage therapist and healer. From my first experience and on, she takes time to understand my areas of pain and always follows up to make sure I'm doing well after the fact. I've referred several friends and clients and will continue to do so. Thank you Helena for always giving me the best healing therapy.

    • I have been to several therapists in the past and am usually very skeptical of life coaching and therapy When I began phone sessions with Grace, she was able to help me discover what was really at the bottom of my concerns and how I viewed the world. She gave me guidance to start me on a journey of self introspection. Grace very quickly helped me feel that the road to self-development and happiness is a rewarding one in which I have a trustworthy ally. She helped me understand my needs for stability, become successful in my home and personal life and I have become a stronger person because of her. I highly recommend Grace.

Absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I are in a long distance relationship and we only see each other once a month. I needed a therapist who could squeeze us in on the following day, a Saturday, when my boyfriend was in town. At first, when John informed me that he was completely booked on Saturday, I dejectedly said thank you and was going to hang up the phone. Then, I was very surprised and grateful that John was still willing to take the time to hear my concerns and provide feedback. He even offered to speak with my boyfriend so he could hear both sides of the story. My boyfriend, who was very reluctant to see a therapist, called me after his talk with John and was more willing to attend the session as well! Because my bf agreed to only attending one session, I did not want to risk seeing an ineffective therapist, so I begged John to see us an hour before his normal business hours and offered to pay extra for the inconvenience. John agreed to meet us super early in the morning at no extra cost! We arrived 15 minutes before our scheduled time and immediately began our session. John had my boyfriend and me facing each other and helped facilitate the dialogue between us. He provided pointers on what words to avoid, how to listen actively, show appreciation, and how to make each other feel understood and safe during conflict. The session was emotional (in a good way!) and in the end, we were both overwhelmed with hope and positive energy! John was very engaged and passionate about helping us. He even gave us a book called Getting the Love You Want that he thought would be helpful for us. Such a small gesture, but I was incredibly touched at the thoughtfulness and genuine care John showed from beginning to end. I cannot thank him enough! My boyfriend and I are excited for our next argument so we can practice what John taught us. We can't wait to see John again next month!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
