"I have been looking for a good massage therapist who knows how to do a full body massage with some attempt for deep muscle without hesitating when asked to do it. I could not have asked for a better professional than Johnny. I was amazed at the short length of time he has been doing this which has been a little over a year. Amazing and shocked with my first therapy with Johnny.. No spot was missed and he is extremely discreet. I have been looking for a good, "head to toe" therapist since my last one in AK 30+ years ago. Johnny totally fits the bill & beyond. Not enough can be said for Johnny's ability as a new massage therapist for the short time he has been doing massage therapy. Unable to imagine how he will be in another year much less 10 years down the road. EXCELLENT. Strongly recommended."

"It was my first time trying “Reiki Body work”. I usually get massage but this was a unique experience. Pros: I kinda got the best of both worlds. Reiki and massage. My therapist was also a doctor!!!!! Very knowledgeable, and talented. Not pushy with products or selling things. Cons: I booked 1 hour session but took 90 min. No extra charge though, just got me behind in my schedule."

"I highly recomend Eric to others, he has a magic touch that helps relieve the pain and sourness of my back and other problem areas due to my osteoporosis and old back injuries. I went to him for several consecutive times within 3 weeks and it tremendously has helped with my back pain. I have been going to him for almost 6 months and now go to him at least twice a month since I find my self not taking pain medication as often and with a lot less pain and with more energy to be more physically active overall."

She offered people a variety of options from type of massage to length, working to fit people’s budget. I will definitely use her again!"

"Mary was extremely interested in helping me and my specific needs. I had explained, via thumtack, to her my circumstances and she took the time to do some research so she was prepared to ask more intense questions when I arrived for my appointment. Mary also added to my own research knowledge and how i can become more aware of my body's needs and possibly circumvent flare ups in the future. I have used massage therapy before and since relocating to Riverside, Mary has been the first massage therapist who made me feel like i have found a professional partner who will be helping me work towards my physical recuperation. I would say to anyone Mary is definitely a massage professional that cares about the client."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
