Counseling. If you struggle with hurt, we will find healing. If you have personal problems and issues, we will find new ways of coping as well as strategies for dealing with the tough obstacles that are before you in life.
Grief/loss counseling. If you struggle with loss, we will journey through this together to a new season in your life
Spiritual. You will come to a greater sense of the purpose and meaning of your life. You will find inner and outer resources that will empower you each day.
My clients have included hundreds who have journeyed through loss in their lives, many who have started their own enterprises, and countless who have become spiritual leaders in their churches and communities

As a coach and mentor, he understood what I needed to grow. He listened well and created environments where I felt safe. He asked questions and drew out what was really important to me and then encouraged me to act in light of those principles and goals. John has a tremendous ability to see potential, and he saw in me what I didn't dare believe. Beyond seeing it though, he helped create a plan for my continued development. As an obstacle-remover John's guidance is a gift to anyone who feels stuck and is seeking to take the next steps in their growth. He led me through a leadership development process 5 years ago that I am seeking to emulate in my relationships with young adults today. John is a master at mentoring and has forever changed the course of my life with his thoughtful questions, bold encouragements, and gracious affirmations.

If I were to count three people in my spiritual walk as being instrumental, John Poortenga would easily be placed within this group. John has a gift for listening and then creating discerning words to compliment what he has heard. It's not enough to be a good listener, you have to be able to put pieces together and then articulate something meaningful, something true, with love. John did this for me at a critical time in my faith. John demonstrated again and again that his heart, his mind wanted to see people excel, even if it meant he would take a lesser role.
If anyone has an opportunity to do any form of mentoring or counselling with John, I would snatch him up in a heartbeat. (In my time he wasn't bad at basketball or baseball either.)

John Poortenga was my mentor for 3 years and leadership coach for 6 years.
When he was my mentor we constructed quarterly goals, John mentored and supported me towards achieving those goals. When he was my leadership coach, he was available to shape me as a leader to be effective in my role as pastor.
John has wonderful insight into human potential. He has a powerful ability to encourage and strengthen another person. When you are with John, you often feel stronger, more confident and that life has more possibilities.
John was always available for me and when needed advocated for my advancement. John used his influence in very positive ways in my life.
John is one of the top influential people in my life and has helped shape and support me in my life and goals.

John is one of the most compassionate, understanding and supportive people I know. In the three years I worked with John I came to acquire a great deal of respect for his wisdom, practicality, intuition and support. When I needed a listening ear from someone who I could count on to support me with out judgement, John was the first person that came to mind. Words that come to mind with thinking about John would be Genuine, Gentle and "a knowing." This knowing, in my opinion, comes from John's strong faith base and it shows as well as can be experienced just by being around him. John always had a way of encouraging others to share difficult topics with love and kindness.
