We hired Candice to reupholster an old winged chair and ottoman. The chair was in pretty bad condition, and Candice completely transformed it. We are so impressed with her work and highly recommend hiring Candice for any upholstery work you need done. She's an expert! On top of that, she's great to work with, super communicative and answered all of our questions right away (including which fabrics to choose and more).

Since May 7, 2018 I have been taking weekly sewing classes with Berna Alvarado. I love learning how to sew from her. She has a good sense of humor, tells wonderful stories about her sewing experience, and shows great enthusiasm for her subject. Berna explains different sewing procedures very clearly and patiently. In the beginning she suggested I bring my own sewing machine to class so that I would get used to it and be able to complete my "homework" at home. I made a linen tot bag with pockets, straps, and a lining within the first two lessons. Since then she has shown me how to install a zipper in a small make-up bag. She also taught me to hem several panels of fabric to be used for Hawaiian costumes for my hula dance class. I've learned important things like how to cut and measure fabric efficiently; how to thread a bobbin; "not to worry when you make mistakes because that is how you learn," says Berna; and how to fold fabric and use an iron so that I don't need to pin every piece before I sew it. Although Berna has certain projects in mind for me to work on, she is very interested in what I specifically want to learn to sew: our next project is to sew a Hawaiian floral full-length dress with two ruffles. She has years of experience sewing clothes for herself, dance costumes, drag queen outfits, draperies, and teaching all levels of sewing students. Berna is also a wonderful resource--she has directed me to inexpensive sewing shops for materials and recommended a great place for me to have my own sewing machine serviced. I look very forward to my lessons. They are fun and very informative. I highly recommend Berna Alvarado to anyone who wants to learn to sew!

Really enjoyed the "Intro to the Machine" sewing class and it taught me what I wanted to learn to get comfortable with basic tasks on a sewing machine that used to seem so daunting. It inspired me to buy my own sewing machine and start on some projects!

About

I use art as a way to teach people how to access their creative mind. You may have heard talk about a right brain and left brain thinking; I am here to tell you we all have both. Nobody is running around with half of their skull empty. We expect everyone to learn math and english even when they are more artistic. We should challenge everyone with creative exercise in the same way. You are as creative as you train yourself to be. Children are really good at it because they don't set limits. So why not encourage them to stay creative? I work with my students in a very different way, I do not hold up an example of my work and make them copy it, nor do I purchase kits for them to make. As a matter of fact I don't even care if they make a finished product at all. I introduce a combination of materials each session and I explain how they are to be used and what I get them to do. I then invite the students to try. My greatest joy comes when one or two look up and say "can we do whatever we want"? Such a request screams to me. There is no intention of a final product, just a child asking if they can explore their own imagination. This is where genious lives, and this is how I teach. I can come to your home or to your school. I am available to help you reevaluate your current art program. I am also available to adults and corporations who are looking for executive training in creativity and managing creative people.

It was very difficult for me to learn how to knit, so I am an exceptionally patient instructor. Our classes are always fun and easy going. We are a small shop, tucked discretely inside of a beauty salon, so if you also need some highlights or a cut, you're in luck!

I started my business to share my love of all things paper crafting with my local community. I love the process of designing and creating, but my passion is in sharing the craft and teaching others.
