I'm abosoulty happy with the way Don Kirkish works, he showed up to my house for an introductory session for only $50, showed up on time, was very friendly & easy going. He immediately receives my dog with open arms & instantly started working with him. To my surprise my dog Major caught on very quickly & right away listening pretty well! What i have been trying to teach Major in months, Don came & taught him in minutes! Major was very happy with Dons services as well! If my dog is happy. Im estatic! My favorite thing about Dons work is that he uses pure love & commands to train. Without treats! That way dog always responds. It was truely a blessing to find him.. My family & Major look forward to continue working with him! If your looking for a trainer for your dog & come across Don. Don't hesitate, give him a call!! You will NOT be sorry.. I MEAN IT!!

After years of my miniature Australian shepherd pulling on the leash and generally being unruly on walks, Kevin was able to show me how to walk him on a slack leash in 2 sessions. I never thought my hyper-mini could behave so well on walks, but already mid-course through his 8 session package I am seeing great results. I highly recommend Kevin to anyone searching for a Sacramento dog trainer.

We enrolled our two full grown German Shepherds (Brewski,4 yrs and Axel 2.5 years) into Offleash K9Training's two week Board and Train program and to say we are impressed is an understatement! Our boys are completely transformed and are now gentlemen! It's so nice to be able to walk and heel them with no pulling, no issues. They are all around more pleasant to be around and we couldn't be happier with our investment! This training is worth every penny! The hours and work that Gunner and all the other trainers put into these dogs is amazing and the results are incredible!

I've been working with Faith since getting my puppy this year and it has been excellent! Training is always a work in progress of course but my dog has benefited so much from training with her! We've been able to work on basic obedience, move onto advanced skills and work on issues specific to my dog. I frequently get compliments about how well behaved my dog is. I would highly recommend Faith to anyonewho is in need of a dog trainer. She is wonderful and a wealth of knowledge & expertise!

Susan Newell is an absolutely fabulous dog trainer. I have a 9 year old rescue Pointer mix, with serious issues including, barrier aggression, biting, and environmental sensitivity. Susan worked with the dog and helped me to understand him Today he is loving, has confidence and is very a stand up and well adjusted guy. We would not have made it without Susan. She is professional, timely and truly cares about her clients (people and dogs). I highly recommend her. Susan Gray, Davis,

Sheila is awesome! She has worked and connected well with my rescue puppy Marley. We worked on obedience with Marley and Sheila was very knowledgeable and gave us many tools to work with our pup. She truly loves and cares for animals and that's very important to have in a dog trainer. She has also promoted my dog bandana business and I thought that was so nice of her. She truly is a honest and amazing dog trainer and I recommend to anyone! Thanks Sheila!!

WOW!! What a great experience. Presley (One Fine Canine) met and exceeded my expectations at every level. I've worked with several dog trainers in the past, and I have to say this by far was the most successful training that we've had. One thing that I really liked is that she listened to my concerns. Presley is extremely knowledgeable and was able to share that knowledge with me in a way that I could clearly understand. You can tell that Presley is very passionate about what she does and the animals and owners that she helps. Plus my dog (Tucker) loved her. I will definitely call Presley again if the need for additional training arises.

I had the pleasure of working with Jamie and she really made a difference with my stubborn Lhasa Apso. My dog had the tendency to get overly excited when outside on his lead around other dogs. This made it extremely hard to take him places because it gave people the wrong impression. After only a couple of sessions with Jamie, he started to calm down and listen more attentively to me. Now Peace walks beautifully on his lead and is much more approachable!!! I would highly recommend Jamie to all of my friends!!!

We were very pleased with Jenni. She was very informative and gave us plenty of effective advise. She took our unruly puppy for training and 5 weeks later returned to us a very pleasant obedient and enjoyable dog. It is obvious that her main concern is the care of our pets. We are forever grateful. Thank you Jenni.

Our dog,Bambi, stays at Tug Dogs for a month at a time when we go out of town, a few times a year. Sometimes she is also there for a shorter stay. She is treated like a member of the family, with kindness, love and respect, The care, training and socialization she receives there is far superior to any she has had from other trainers. We have total confidence that she is in the best place she could possibly be! The care Bambi gets at Tug Dogs is way above the highest rating on your scale! We recommend Tug Dog without reservation!!!

We have a black lab who we got when he was 7 weeks old. When we got him, we were told that he had a mellow personality and that he would be calm. This was not true. Our puppy was a handful, high energy, and out of control. We tried classes, and a trainer, and things did not improve. We found Juniper, and she turned the situation around. She is excellent with dogs and puppies. She was able to provide the right training for our dog, which included positive reinforcement, and proper exercise and diet. Juniper also gave us a lot of pointers about how to interact with our dog. One of our challenges was that our dog had no attention span. Juniper taught us how to do mental training exercises with our dog that enabled him to increase his attention span. And he really enjoyed these too. Theo is still a high energy dog, but he is also obedient and fun to be around. Juniper found a dog park nearby, and we take him every week for a vigorous game of fetch, which he loves. We now live in the house in a more harmonious way and we are very grateful. It took a lot of human and dog social skills to transform our complicated situation into something that works. Juniper has what it takes to understand both your dog and you.

My husband and I have worked with Joyce for almost a year now. Words cannot describe our fondness of her. She has and always will be more than a dog trainer. In addition to her exceptional dog training services, Joyce provided us with tips on proper dog nutrition. The first day we met Joyce, she asked to take a look at our dog's food. My husband and I were so impressed as she skimmed through the list of ingredients on the dog food bag, nodding her head yes and no. She is passionate about the well being of all dogs and is always researching and learning new things to pass on to her clients. She is peaceful (very soft spoken), reliable, and of course - SHE KNOWS DOGS!!! Not only has Joyce improved the quality of our dog's already wonderful life, but she has also left a mark on our hearts that will never be forgotten. Anyone would be lucky to have Joyce in their dog's life at some capacity, rather it be as a trainer, walker, consultant or plain old friend. Thank you Joyce! Ashly Patton Ashly Patton

We needed someone to stay with our "special needs" dog, as we had to be out of town for a week and couldn't take her. Brittany was absolutely wonderful with her, patient and accepting. We tried leaving her once before and it was a disaster as our dog is afraid of everyone and everything, but Brittany was able to reach her and bond in a short time. I will recommend her to anyone I know who needs a trainer or pet sitter!!!

I used Docile Dogs last year when I was living in Elk Grove for five days of petsitting my two Springer Spaniels. Steve, the trainer/sitter did a fantastic job and even taught my dogs how to walk properly on a leash w/o pulling! I was very impressed with the notes he left me on my dogs' progress in their training session. I highly recommend Docile Dogs..his professionalism & knowledge of dog training was top notch!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
