- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $45 per 1hr session for subject tutoring (algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, physics, etc), and I charge $60 per 1hr session for test prep (SAT, ACT). Test prep courses are 12 week programs with one 1hr meeting per week, but if the test is coming up soon we can meet twice per week and compress the course. Be warned though: this won't yield as good of results as if we had the full 12 weeks to study. My sessions are all nominally 1 hour, but it's more important to me that the student gain a robust understanding of the material, so I'm not too nit-picky about the time. It's fairly common for my sessions to extend to 70 or 80 minutes, for no extra charge. If I have another student to meet with though I'll need to enforce the 60 minute session length.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
For subject tutoring: Meeting with a new student isn't a whole lot different than meeting with students I've already been seeing for a while. I will ask the student to bring homework or tests to our meeting, and we'll go through them together identifying types of problems that the student has trouble with. As we work through practice problems together, I'll show the student how the problem works and try to ascertain what it is that is causing confusion. I'll do my best to explain and show the nuances of the problem, and try to communicate it in a manner that makes sense to this particular student. For test prep: The first meeting with a test prep student is a bit different than the rest of the meetings: in our first meeting I'll basically just be giving the student a data dump of everything I know about the test and strategies for approaching its different sections. I'll then assign parts of a practice test as homework. In our subsequent meetings we'll go over the practice test and discuss the parts that are giving the student trouble. I'll recommend techniques for overcoming these problems as well as clarify any misunderstandings. I will assign practice tests as homework each week, and at each meeting we'll work together on improving the student's score.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my bachelors degree in computer engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, in December 2015. During this degree program, I studied many different aspects of mathematics, including calculus and signal processing. I also studied physics, particularly the physics behind electronics but also general mechanical physics.
