Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have an outlet installed?

If you plan on hiring a professional electrician to install an outlet, expect to pay $75 to $500, or an average of $210. But for an accurate cost estimate, you need to contact a few electrical outlet installers near you.

The light switch and outlet types may impact your cost. The location of the outlet also matters, as the electrician may have to route additional wiring and may not have access to existing wiring. If you need the outlet childproofed, this may also cost more.

Do I need a permit to install GFCI outlets?

Depending on where you live, you likely need a permit to install GFCI outlets. When in doubt, get in contact with your local government, and ask a licensed electrician to perform your electrical work.

Do I need an electrician to add an outlet?

Generally, this is a job best left to a licensed professional. A licensed electrician will be able to install your outlet using the most up-to-date code practices. If you need any permits to perform the install, the electrician should also be able to obtain them for you.

I contacted Omar about installing a 50a 240v outlet in my workshop/garage. He and his partner arrived on time and did very professional work. I’m very happy with the results and pricing was more than fair. They rand into multiple obstacles but quickly found solutions and got the job done. Highly recommended and will definitely be returning to them for future electrical work.

Hired Myro to run a new individual 20 amp circuit outlet I needed for a treadmill. He was prompt to answer my request, very reasonably priced and professional throughout the whole process. This young man did a impressive job. I needed the outlet in the family room area. Access to the attic had to be made from the bedroom to family room area. It was 98 degrees outside, so you can imagine how hot it was in the attic. I have a low roof line, which limits workable space in the attic. Then you add blow in insulation and A/C ducting into the picture and wonder if the job is possible? Not a problem for Myro. He installed the 20 amp breaker I needed in the garage panel and ran the wiring to the outlet, ready to use now. I would recommend Myro to anyone who has electrical needs. In the future, if I have a electrical problem, I know I’ll reach out to Myro.

I was getting a spa installed in my back yard and needed wiring run from the electrical Box to the far corner of the yard. He came out and did a good job hooking up the electric I've had no problems with that but his maids mints and cleanliness of the area left a lot to be desired. His handy man dug the trench and did not put down any tarp or paper to catch the dirt. When they were all done they left a sorted piles of rocks and dirt around the yard and there was a sunken channel running the whole width of my yard. In addition he chipped away the stucco and never came back and fix the holes. And the outlet that he installed underneath the electrical Box pulls right off the wall with no effort whatsoever and it was not sealed or waterproofed in any way. I reached out to him a few times to have him correct the issue he said he was going to swing by and take care of it but did not. I would not hire this contractor again
