Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

I very rarely do reviews but I was so happy with the experience I had with Ashley that even though I am very busy with the holiday I feel I must write one. My daughter lives in LA and only comes up once a year. This year she and her family were coming up for three days during Thanksgiving. I wanted to take that opportunity to have family photographs taken. I selected Ashley from the "Thumbtack" website and we agreed to meet at Lands Park the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving. As we got closer to the date it became apparent that the day would be rainy. Ashley agreed to instead come to my house a little later in the morning and take photos under overhangs or between showers so that we could get the family photos I desired. Ashley was so pleasant to everyone and had a lot of patience with the three toddlers. She was also very professional. She uploaded photos right away that I could use for Christmas cards and had the rest edited and loaded within a week. She also sent me a cd with all the edited photos within a week. All of this at a very reasonable price. I will definitely use Ashley again and recommend her to all my friends.

I hired Pete Marcellana to be a photographer for a family photo session. Tow of my daughters were graduating from college and my husband and I were flying into Sacramento from out of state. Pete was very accommodating to our very tight schedule and even was available to do the session on a different day then we had planned. Pete kept in touch via email and text which I appreciated. During the session Pete was very professional and was open to what ever we wanted to do. I received the email with the download of all the photos taken within the time frame promised by Pete. The photos were very nice and I am very happy with them. Thanks Pete Marcellana!

Lisa was amazing to work with. She was able to squeeze us in for a last-minute shoot, took adorable photos of our family and finished the editing in a few days, allowing me to get my Christmas cards out on time. Lisa had great props available and she and her assistant were so sweet and patient with my 7-month-old son. I would highly recommend her.

I Hired Robert To Take Pictures Of My Family For My Mothers 60th Birthday. I Had a Large Group Of 7, Including 2 Toddlers. We Decided On Having The Pictures Taken Around Sun Down At Land Park. We Started At A Bench Location That He Said He Had Scrubbed Clean In Preparation For Our Shoot. I Really Appreciated That Since We Wouldn't Have To Worry About Sitting On Duck Poop Or Anything Sticky That May Have Been There Beforehand. He Was Also Very Open To Our Suggestions To Locations That We Wanted To Have For The Photo Shoot. Overall He Was Very Nice And Friendly. I Only Wish That He Would've Given More Direction In How We Should All Have Posed And Given More Suggestions In What Would Look Good In The Photos. To This Day I Still Regret Not Having Gotten Single Shots Of The Toddlers. I'll Give Him The Benefit Of The Doubt Because We Were A Big Group So I Know That It Could've Been A Little Intimidating. I Did Enjoy The Pictures Of Our Family. I Was Able To Print Them Out And Frame Them For My Mom Which She Loved. I Would Definitely Request Kyber Light Photo In The Future.

Ricky is personable, reliable, and fun to be around...basically everything you could want in a photographer. Our courthouse wedding got canceled due to the coronavirus but we decided to proceed with our scheduled photoshoot anyways. Ricky helped to lift our spirits and we can't wait to see what he's captured. We ultimately decided to elope last minute on our own so we contacted Ricky again; he was very accomodating and responsive to our needs. He went out of his way for us which is amazing given that we contacted him last minute. I will be recommending him to all of my family and friends and he will be our go-to photographer moving forward.

Ashley blew us away! I am so grateful we found her! She was very responsive and was able to book us in very quickly for a family photo shoot. She was great to work with and very knowledgeable about lighting, posing, scenery etc. She is great at directing people in order to get good shots, which is nice because we’re not all models who know how to pose perfectly! She was also great at working with our 3 year old and got some fantastic shots of him. We got a ton of pictures and I’m so happy with all of them. I really hope to work with Ashley again in the future for more photo sessions!

LOVED everything Kelly did for us. My wife was pretty worried that our kids wouldn't cooperate but Kelly was able to keep them engaged - we all had a lot of fun. Kelly's communication and response time were impressive and she delivered the photos less than 24 hours after our shoot. I am definitely recommending Kelly to all my family/friends and hiring her again in the near future. I just wish I'd known about her when we got married :)
