Introduction: My work reflects universal love for community and people. I capture the essence of the human experience through the eyes, through gesture, and the way I use color theory to capture a feeling. I love the process. Learning and growing, solving the puzzle of a design that reflect the research I do to communicate an idea.

I have known Ruby since 1997. She is tremendously responsible and dedicated to any project she puts her mind to. I have had the opportunity to participate with her numerous times over the past 16 years.in the creation of Public Art for Third District Court & Tesch Law Offices. Ruby successfully mentored an entire elementary school of children in the creation of collaborative Art Projects at a local Art Museum. The children's art was later auctioned for charitable donation at the dia de los Muertos School Celebration.. Ruby representing her non-profit Mestizo was a wonderful presenter at the Salt Lake Bioneers Conference. Her session received rave reviews! Ruby is a hard working--extremely creative young woman. I can recommend her whole heartedly. She will approach any task with gusto and focus.

When I look for inspiration, I take a take a ride down some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the Westside of Salt Lake City. The neighborhoods around North Temple and 600 West explode in life and beauty through the outstanding, colorful, herstorical and powerful works of Ruby Chacón. Ruby's beautiful masterpieces, including impassioned paintings and breathtaking murals are displayed from the outside of pupuserias to non-profit organizations and the inside walls of coffeehouses to homes of people I care about and respect. Ruby's work is exceptional. I have been blessed with the opportunity to know Ruby, and I have seen her through the creative process of developing unforgettable and unique impressions on various forms of canvas, including a permanent display for the public transit light rail system in Salt Lake City (TRAX). If you are interested in excellence, I would highly recommend Ruby Chacón.

Ruby is a very talented self-motivated community artist who approaches her artistic interests and intellectual pursuits with innovation, experimentation, and a collaborative spirit. Indeed, her innovative and collaborative side has always impressed me. She demonstrates this side of herself via her numerous murals throughout Salt Lake City, Utah. With each of these murals, in fact with all of her public art projects, she engages in a community research process where she mentors youth artist interns and surveys local communities for ideas and issues they want represented in public art in their community. For example, she recently completed a public art project with the highly anticipated expansion of our local public transportation system, the Traxline. This involved working with local communities to gather input through focus groups and surveys, as well as work with the city and Utah Transit Authority. She and her apprentices took that information to design amazing artwork that is reflective of the neighborhoods the Transit serves. Ruby's creative force and imagination are evident not only in her portfolio, but also in her role as the co-founder of Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts (MICA). As the co-founder she imagined a creative space in her local working-class community that would strengthen and build community through arts, civic engagement, and dialogue. MICA provides this space and allows under-represented communities to engage the local community and/or use art as a tool for social change. The space includes an art gallery that hosts a range of exhibits and installations, a community art studio, and a small coffee shop. Ruby's creative force and her commitment to communities of color continue to inspire me.

Ruby came to Morocco and painted a mural in a dome space. The theme conceived was what spirituality meant to us. Her work ethic is incredible. Her sense and liberal use of color is one of the many reasons why I love her work.

Ruby Chacón is a powerful artist and activist. She has changed many people's lives through her work. She is a talented teacher as well and a delight to work with on projects. She is especially talented working with youth. Ruby has made such a contribution to Utah through her art—in changing the way people view the state's history. Ruby will have great impact in any community in which she works.
