Shea is an amazing singer. She was easy to work worth and prompt in responding. We gave her an idea of what we wanted for the playlist and she then made her own that worked very well for our Christmas party. We would definitely hire her again.

Summer performed for a small group of us and we were all very impressed and very happy with how it all went. I had asked her to blend in some 90's bands into her repertoire (my wife's favorite music!) and the choices were fantastic. She arrived early, played far longer than we had originally allowed time for (which was great) and was a very pleasant and easy person to get along with and communicate with. I'd hire her again in a heart beat.

I have been taking guitar lessons from Kimberly via Skype for about six years. I really like her teaching style which is systematic and focused. She tailors her lessons to my goals and time. Her teaching method is to help you gain insight and skill through patient practice of gradually changing exercises. She doesn't snow you with theory, but presents it to you in digestible amounts just when it will make sense. She welcomes questions and I always learn from our discussions. She has led me to learn techniques on the guitar that I was absolutely sure I could never learn. For something to seem impossible at the start, to seem possible a week later and to be routine a month later is amazingly uplifting. Kimberly's background was first a life of teaching herself and playing gigs with all kinds of bands in all kinds of places. She has also deepened and strengthened her knowledge by gaining academic degrees in guitar and jazz and also by studying under masters. This gives her an incredibly deep understanding of learning and teaching music, an immense skill in playing guitar, and an appreciation for the challenges of playing with other people. I especially love her continued enthusiasm for guitar and that she really enjoys teaching. I have found in Kimberly the best of teachers and highly recommend her without reservation.

We hired Tyler to play a 180 person cocktail party and dinner at Pelican Hill for a corporate event last Saturday. He was so good that the crowd wouldn't let him stop so we ended up hiring him for an additional hour! We wanted him to play more pop music versus more traditional jazz as we wanted an upbeat performance. He did an awesome job with his playlist and provided exactly what we were looking for. He worked the crowd by walking through the dinner tables while playing all types of genre. He had everyone up dancing including the CEO, not something you usually see from a one man sax player at a dinner event! He received more than 1 standing ovation. Received tons of feedback following the event from the attendees that it was their favorite part of the 3 day event. Would hire him again in a minute. Tremendous value for the cost.

Peter was responsive and accommodating to my music inquiries. He played for 4 hours straight basically, playing many classic and more modern songs, too. Many people at our party were impressed with Peter, wondering how I found him. Great guitar and vocals !

Chris and Zach were fantastic! We hired them for our house party at the last minute (due to my poor planning) and we couldn't have asked for better! They were professional, fun and high-energy. I highly, highly recommend them! Thank you, guys!

We had Skip Johnson and his band, The Zippers, perform at our daughters wedding and reception last weekend. Skip played acoustic guitar at the ceremony and the band played at the reception. They are all great musicians and performers and definitely know how to keep a party going!! We had so many compliments from the guests and everyone loved their music and personal interaction with the crowd. Having the right band is a huge part in making a party a success – and Skip Johnson and The Zippers nailed it!

My son started formal drum lessons with Steve two and a half years ago. Steve set the bar on professionalism, flexibility, communication, and has the patience to teach music to younger kids. My son went from a kid banging on a toy drum, to a musician that could play drum set rhythms in an elementary school jazz band. We've had other instructors since Steve left the Los Alamitos area but none of them compared to his high level of attributes listed earlier.

Drew was the DJ for my mother's 90th birthday party and he did an awesome job! Played lots of the songs my mom loved from the 40's and 50's at the perfect volume before and during dinner- not too loud that we couldn't converse, but loud enough to enjoy. Just right! After dinner, he started throwing in some 70's and 80's rock and got the crowd up and dancing. Even Mom got up and danced a bit! Everybody had a great time, in large part to the way Drew could read the crowd. Would definitely use Drew again!

JD catered a very delicious and very elegant dinner party for 20 people for me. The food was so scrumptious that several diners were compelled to eat off other, more light eater's plates! Jon is very creative with menus and his staff was very friendly and professional. I will definitely use them again for my next party!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

            What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

            • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
            • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
            • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
