Bathroom and living room remodeling work done by Contemporary Design Builders. They have really good architects, craftsmen, concrete, tile installation workers and so on. I recommended them to my neighbors.

We hired Carlos to do the final touches and electrical wiring in our pool/concrete deck remodel which included wiring for a pool light with GFCI and other poolside receptacles, pump and heater. Instead of giving us the rigamarole about how our midcentury ranch house needed to be electrically updated (we've found that electricians love bring old things up to current code), he gave us what we wanted with our current panel. Carlos was honest and sincere and produced a VERY fair price. We are very happy with his work.

I hired Cheryl through Thumbtack in Feb 2015 to fully renovate a 1700sqft home in what we thought would be a quick two months. First and foremost, she's a fantastic designer - she understands color, is particular about details, and can visualize what a space should feel like. Different times of the day, different seasons of the year ... she thought through it all and got the right combination of lighting, windows, and heating/cooling to get it right. In ADDITION to that designer's touch, Cheryl is a tiger of a General Contractor. I really can't overstate how much energy and passion she put into the project getting bids from subcontractors, managing and directing her own crew, and fighting to keep everything on schedule. I felt entirely comfortable letting her pick fixtures and finishes, which lessened the load on my shoulders. And, from an owner's perspective, the way she documented every dollar spent and provided reports and accounting was beyond anything I've seen anyone else do. It's amazing. In the end, the project did NOT go as expected. After opening walls, we discovered extensive termite damage (which meant some new exterior walls), antiquated electrical, and sub-standard plumbing work. Most other contractors would have walked off the job or taken advantage of the situation. Most other contractors would have taken an additional four months to finish. Cheryl didn't - she poured her whole self into the challenge and worked tirelessly to get the project done. The end product is fabulous and it took only one month longer than originally anticipated. Perhaps most importantly, Cheryl's integrity, "whatever it takes" attitude, and her extremely high Say/Do ratio is a testament to her character. She's the type of person I like to work with, and I'd be delighted to share any details of my experience with anyone who's considering her services.

I have had the opportunity to Brendt work on 3 homes that I have purchased over 15 years. He has done extensive remodeling from - Tile, Installation of Doors, movement of walls, electrical and even putting in a structual beam and at all times the work has been excellent, exactly what we were looking to do and done on time within budget; and was open to chages as the project moved forward. Highly Recommended

Tom and his team did a great job redesigning and remodeling our kitchen about a year ago. He put a lot of thought into how we use the kitchen, and found some cool solutions to our small kitchen space. We'd definitely hire him again!

I needed a new fence carpenter to build a fence and add a wall inside my home that was being remodeled. The fence looked beautiful and the wall was done well so I decided to ask if they also did bathroom or kitchen remodeling work. Bill said that he had a wide range of work he could perform or manage for me so I started small and had them redo a small bathroom. The bathroom work included cabinets, bathtub, shower walls, new travertine floor and painting. After the bathroom was complete and saving up for a few weeks we moved on to the kitchen. He assisted in the design and layout with the designer. The work took several weeks but it was beautiful and was much better than the drawings. After several months of work on my home, it is perfect with there help. I can't thank them enough and will pass there info on to friends.

In short Luke is excellent. Luke was very detail oriented, has excellent communication and clarity . Over that he was also reasonable and understanding. He listens to ur needs. He is extremely clean and makes sure he leaves the work area clean and not like most other folks I have had work on projects before. He completed his task and went beyond his allocated time to make sure it was perfect and did not try to overcharge me... He is coming back to take care of some of the left over work my Kitchen contractor was overcharging me for. .. Cant wait..If I had known.. I would have gone to Luke in the first place.....Next project... Overall I will recommend him!!

I was fortunate to find Preece Contracting Services -- a recommendation from my next door neighbor -- following a natural disaster. At a time when prices could have been inflated due to supply and demand pressures I was charged very reasonably for excellent repair work. This led to working with Preece on additional kitchen remodeling work to great satisfaction. A thoroughly satisfied customer.

Michael McGonigle - the general contractor for MTM - exhibits extreme attention to detail. This results in a perfect, super-professional job every single time, no matter what issues the underlying structure may or may not have. For example, in laying the solid Brazilian Cherry wood, my staircase was not square (the two sides were NOT parallel!) and the underlying concrete was not level or even flat! The previous carpet hid those imperfections but with solid wood, but wood doesn't! Michael took the extra time to painstakingly make sure that the new wood precisely fit. And today, I admire the beauty and workmanship every single time I walk on those stairs. Which is quite literally many times, every day. I've seen the work of other contractors. Some are great too, but some definitely seem to think minor imperfections are acceptable. To me, as well as to Michael McGonigle, any imperfection is unacceptable. Whether you are walking on a new floor, or enjoying a newly remodeled kitchen or bath, you don't want to look at flaws every day. With MTM you won't. I've seen Michael's work on a few other sites, as well as every single day in my own house. And it's flawless.

I'll start with the good. The guys who arrived to do the work--3 cabinet/counter installs, 3 lighting installs, 3 toilets, 2 new floors, 3 paint colors--were all good men, with the primary contractor being exceptional (Javi, I believe). Communication was an issue at times, but we worked around it as best we could. Work ethic was strong, they were respectful and careful, even when I requested touch up after touch up. And, when I decided last minute to have the showers painted, they called a friend and worked around him. The items selected all came from the Pykles showroom, and with my budget constraints, I didn't have much choice, but what we got is still very nice. We went a tiny bit over budget once I realized brushed nickel fixtures weren't included, but they found them for me to save me having to buy them myself and made sure I got all the counters I wanted. Quality of workmanship and products is high. And my baths look amazing! Now, the bad. I'm not sure how it happened, but somehow the cabinets that arrived for my 3 baths were not the right ones, so we were off to a bad start on the first day. We had one that was the right size, but the drawers were on the wrong side for the plumbing, so we had to make adjustments. They told me they would be installed on Tuesday, then Wednesday, but they didn't actually install the other two until Friday and the last one on Saturday (I at least had one toilet and one shower the whole time tho--whew!). That whole ordeal set us back almost two days, so what was originally going to be a 4-day install took 5.5 :( The last day, Saturday, was a scramble to get them done quickly enough to make it to another job, and there was a miscommunication with the crew chief, but we worked it out, apologies all around. The chief came back later in the day to take care of a few quick things, and he'll be back later to handle the absolute last thing--a soap dish that couldn't be mounted without damaging the new shower paint. I appreciated the extra concern. I've never had a contractor show up when they say in the morning, leave when they say in the evening, or finish as planned, and these guys struggled with that a bit too. I give 4-4.5 stars because of the miscommunications and minor delays in what was otherwise a good remodel.

Nick Ghosn and his crew at G E Fay Construction have done several projects for us including remodeling work as well as drought tolerant landscape projects in several sections of our property. The professionalism and reliability is what sets them apart from the competition. We highly recommend this company for any job as I believe that no job is too big or too small for them to deliver customer oriented quality work at the best affordable price.

Mike has been our "go to" contractor for a few of our home and rental construction and remodel needs. All in all, he's done 6.5 bathrooms; 2 kitchens; 2 complete Re-do's (1 - two story 3 BR condo with new balcony, 1 - 2 BR Apartment; 2 other flips for rent-readiness). He has a very keen eye for colors and styles and we use him as a design resource also. He is also experienced in landscaping; so do not hesitate to ask about that as well. He and his team are very professional, clean and prompt in their work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
