We recently bought an older fixer upper and Jose has helped us with several jobs. He removed popcorn ceiling, texturized, put in new drywall and pot lights, did painting, installed floor tile, and is now tiling my new shower. He has a lot of overall construction experience and brings important knowledge to the job. His work has been quality and looks really nice. His pricing is very competitive and he is responsive and easy to work with. We had a few last minute delays on our end getting materials and he kindly rescheduled several times. We are going to work with him on some outside hardscape and fencing as well. We highly recommend Jose and his team. (I will add some photos soon)

We had a leaking dishwasher that apparently had been leaking for some time without our knowledge and caused some water damage. We had him demolish part of our kitchen because the problem was somewhat extensive and put in new cupboards and a kitchen sink, as well as repair some drywall and he did a brilliant job. I will definitely hire Miguel in the future without hesitation. I contacted Thumbtack late Friday afternoon, approx 5-6pm and I saw that I had a response from Miguel by 8.15pm. I replied not expecting a response until the next morning, but instead I had an appt for Miguel to come out and inspect the job the next day and he started work on the following day (Sunday) and completed the job on Monday. Miguel's prices are more than reasonable and I am glad I found him.

Carlos's team that came to do the drywall repair and texturing are skilled, fast and friendly. Carlos was very responsive to my call, came out and gave me what I considered to be a very reasonable price. The quality of the work exceeded my expectations. My experience with Contemporary Design Builders was wonderful and I would highly recommend their services.

I hired Donaldo & Manuel to remove the popcorn ceilings in my condo and to also remove the 'orange peel' texture (ugly, 'pimply' drywall finish sprayed on by drywall contractors) that was on every single wall. The last step was to paint the entire place. D & M came to my house to bid the job and I received a quote the next day. They came over to my house second time to show me samples of smooth drywall texture finishes to choose from. They were on time, asked questions and answered all my questions. Much of the 1st day D&M was on the job was spent prepping my unit. I recently had new laminate flooring installed which was a big concern for me considering there were so many messy, scraping/drywall sanding and painting steps to follow. Each day great care was taken with the prepping for whatever step was being done. The first step to be completed was the removal of the popcorn ceiling. The second step was putting a thin coat of drywall over the existing texture, letting it dry, lightly sanding and then smoothing and lightly texturing the final coat of drywall mud for the finish. The last step was rolling the paint on the walls and painting the trim color. The crucial and important thing for me was the care that D & M took every single morning to re-lay plastic and paper covering over my new floor. Every evening they would remove it and clean up meticulously as possible before leaving. It was amazing. D&M arrived every day promptly at 8AM and worked a full day. They were friendly, courteous and very concerned with my satisfaction every step of the way. They always asked questions, never assuming anything which was great. I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat because this 6 day paint job was done with the utmost concern for quality (theirs) and satisfaction (mine and theirs) at every step. I could not give a higher rating for Abe. This is an extraordinarily kind, honest, hardworking, and likeable guy. He does great work for a good price. He communicated through every step of the process and the end product was wonderful. He did a bunch of misc things for us, including drywall, insulation, and duct work. He is very talented and knows his way around most every trade. Best of all, you can't help but feel comfortable to have him around your home. He is just a great guy and a reliable, affordable option when you don't want to do the work yourself. I'll be hiring him again, that is for sure.

I hired Hugh to paint my kitchen and dining area during a remodel and he did a fantastic job. He's really good at patching up textured drywall and making it look normal again. Plus, Hugh knows so much about home repair you can pretty much ask him about anything that needs fixing around the house and he'll give you honest feedback on how to go about it and the general cost. Very fair pricing for his work too. Highly recommended!

GW Construction helped me with a remodel. The job consisted of uprighting a 12 ft. support beam and approximately 25 drywall panels. The price was a lot less than other contractors that bid on the job and they completed the job in one week. Matt and Jody communicated with me on a daily basis asking how the job was going. They were absolutely dedicated to my satisfaction. The contractors that worked on the project were professional and made me laugh all day long. They even let me know when they saw a better idea for my remodel or saw something that we needed to tweak to make it look better. No fuss, no hassle, no problems. Matt gives you his price and sticks to it, even if something comes up and a little more work needs to be done. Overall a great experience and a job well done!

Martin and his crew did great work for us. They were professional and friendly. We originally had them give us a bid just to remove popcorn ceiling and repair some drywall, but we ended up hiring them to do lots more work - everything from installing can lighting with new electrical lines to installing new vinyl windows.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
