I have been teaching French for many years now. Currently I have 10 students aged 5 to 70 years of age. They are all very comfortable with me, for I have a very friendly personality! Learning French is difficult but I always manage to make my sessions both interesting and stimulating. Beginners won't be bored with grammar and advanced students will have the chance to practice what they already know and learn new material. I love teaching and seeing my students improving is vey important to me. Every lesson is unique and connects me with my students on various levels. Some concepts are hard to teach, and depending on the culture of origin of each student I need to adjust and find the right approach. This is where my degree in psychology comes handy!

My daughter has had one french lesson with Catherine. Catherine did her very best to accommodate us, being that we live so far from each other. She was engaging and friendly with my teenage daughter and helped put her at ease for her first lesson with her. She is very knowledgable and was able to help my daughter start remembering the things that she had forgotten and shared some new information as well. We look forward to continuing our lessons with Catherine.

This review is following our initial tutoring session with Catherine for my 8 year old daughter whom is currently in a french immersion program. Catherine is helping my daughter with reading and writing. Catherine was also able to meet us at our neighborhood library which is a good setting for my daughter to study (she sometimes gets to relaxed at home and looses focus). My daughter was very comfortable right off the bat and is looking forward to meeting on a weekly basis.

Catherine is very good at explaining challenging grammar and vocabulary. She found a helpful explanation and exercises for some verbs I have struggled with for years. By not correcting every little thing you might be saying or using incorrectly, she encourages you to speak freely so you can speak with more confidence. She does explain what you have said incorrectly or gives you ways/words to say it better but only after you've finished. I also want to add that if you want to speak French correctly you should work with a native speaker.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I evaluate the student and discuss his /her goals and expectations. A plan is then proposed and we can start to have some fun!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a native speaker born in Lyon (French Alps). I lived in France and Switzerland for 30+ years, then moved to the United States some twenty years ago. I earned a Bachelor's degree in psychology and is currently working on a Master's degree in French Literature at San Diego State University.
