About
Learning happens best when we can make connections between what we're learning and what we already know. So I really try to make material relatable to my students. I understand the importance of presenting information in many different ways to accommodate different learning styles. I also make concepts physically manipulatable. For example, I teach reading music by having students actually move physical representations of various note values around in space. Through years of experience, I have found that the more students play with a concept, the better they are able to retain it, connect it to what they already know, and use it as a preparation for what comes next.
In addition, I use a language-learning model with my students when I help them learn music. The same four skills that are necessary to be proficient at a language (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) are also necessary to be a proficient musician. My students learn to read and write and to discern qualities of music they hear, as well as to play/vocalize (depending on instrument). Some people call parts of this approach "theory" and "aural skills". I call it being a good musician.
I am a singer currently singing with the San Diego Master Chorale. I conduct the choir and accompany at church as needed, and also play the violin. I teach voice, piano, and violin from my home in the Clairemont area in San Diego (major cross-streets are Balboa and Genesee).
Please let me know if you have any questions. I'd love to help you achieve your musical goals!
Helping students discover that they can do the things they want to do.

My 10 year old granddaughter had a wonderful first lesson with Amy Long! Miss Amy is talented and creative. Her enthusiasm is contagious! By using a variety of techniques including placing notes between bar lines on the floor, to naming all the notes on the keyboard, and figuring out basic melodies, we came away excited and looking forward to next week's lesson!

After 3 lessons I am making good progress on expanding my range, in spite of being older. Amy is very good at explaining what I need to do to get the higher notes.

Our 5 year-old has improved a great deal while taking lessons with Amy. She has made it fun and has personalized her lessons to his interest and developmental stage. He now has a better posture while playing and has started to read music.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
For individual instruction, I charge $60/hr $50 per 45 minutes, and $30 per half hr. I also do group classes; if you're interested in a group class please contact me to discuss scope of work and pricing.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first lesson is always an introduction to the student's learning styles, aesthetic preferences, and current technical level. Of course, new students should also use the first lesson -- as an introduction to me and my teaching styles! I tend to ask a lot of questions. We will also get right to work! If the student is completely new to the field, or has not brought previous work, we'll dip into my library to find appropriate, interesting material at the right level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Current member of the San Diego Master Chorale.
Past accompanist for church children's music; current substitute accompanist.
Several years of past experience as church children's music director.
Several years of church choir director experience.
6 months experience teaching after-school general music appreciation to kids ages 4-5.
6 months experience teaching after-school drama classes to kids ages 5-11.
Opera program in college (voice performance).
Since I'm a performing musician, I have to keep up with repertoire, theory, and technique studies for myself. When I learn something new, I make sure my students learn it, too!
