We highly recommend Lois For tutoring. She is well known in Honolulu and has years of experience. She tutored our granddaughter when she needed to take the entrance exams into private schools. Lois has great knowledge of children and skill in getting them to do their work. Her lessons were challenging and fun. Our grandaughter could hardly wait to return to her next session. We wish Lois was here to tutor our grandaughter in her college SATS. Carol Lehman

I actually hired Daniel for poker tutoring. I had never played cards, knew nothing about Hold'em and had three days to learn and then play for a business opportunity. Daniel asked me what I knew, and then we went from there. He absolutely knows what he's doing. He knows his stats, he knows the game and he knew I was starting from 0. Turns out I lost my buy-in (just my origonal buy-in), but told the table at the end of the night that it was my first poker game. Got a lot of compliments after that, not kidding, all due to Daniel. It couldn't have went better.

Viva Test Prep has been incredibly great to have for our College Bound SAT program with Boys & Girls Club of Venice. Word of mouth of high school students has increased our weekly SAT prep classes each week over the first month we have used Viva Test Prep. I highly recommend them, Connor, our test prep teacher, has been fantastic. Highly, highly satisfied. We hope to continue to use them over the course of the year!

I'm seventeen years old and took the new 2016 SAT test for the first time. My score was significantly lower than my GPA would indicate. I had several offers from tutors to assist in improving my SAT score. After reading the reviews and talking with several people, I choose to work with Sarah. I have had multiple sessions with her this summer. I highly recommend Sarah to be your tutor. She has a very pleasant personality and always makes sure you understand the current concept before moving on to another. She is very understanding of your schedule and will do whatever she can to work with you. I am ending my sessions only because to my pleasant surprise I have been offered an athletic scholarship after my senior year that will accept my current gpa and current SAT as completely satisfactory.

I’ve had a few tutors throughout my education, and Randy has been by far the best one. He tutored me in high school all the way up to community college and I’m happy to say now I’m attending my dream university and I couldn’t have done it without his help. He helped with Algebra 2, math analysis, math SAT tutoring, and community college level Pre calculus which I earned the highest test scores in the class and completed the class with an A+. I was also balancing a student athlete schedule while tutoring with him so he was always so accomadating and helpful of my busy schedule and would help me anyway that he could. After tutoring sessions he would take time out of his day/night and send me extra notes or explain further if I needed it. He was the first tutor I felt completely comfortable with from the very first session. My family is also so happy with Randy’s work over the past few years with us and enjoys Randy’s company just as much as I do! He tutored my sister as well as my friends. He really tries to see what way works for each student and tries to make concepts as applicable as he can. There were times when professors explained things a way in which I did not grasp well and Randy always knew how to explain it in a way I could understand and succeed with. I recommend Randy to a student that needs help in any subject, he is the best!!

My son is on the spectrum, and i thought it would be almost impossible to find someone who has the passion and understanding of how unique a kid with any LD could be. I am pleased to say that we couldn't of found a better tutor than Mrs. Erin. She's wonderful! I've observed and listened to some of her teaching/tutoring techniques. I really like how she fully explains and goes over tutoring assignments with my son. Her patience, dedication and ability to help not only my son but many other students amazes me! I can really look forward to a great outcome from his tutoring sessions. Im sure academic skills that are needed to be successful are going to be met! Thank you Club Z tutoring for having such amazing tutors!!! I would definitely recommend to any of my friends or to whom ever is looking for a tutor!

In preparation for the LSAT, I've taken a Blueprint course, done tutoring with a highly rated, expensive tutor for four months, but at the end of the day, if I had to choose a tutor, it would be Cyrus. He communicates concisely and clearly, making the learning process easier. And during the sessions, he writes down all the tips and suggestions he makes on Google docs, available to you at all times to review. I've suggested him to all my friends studying for the LSAT and I don't doubt his skills are as great in the other fields of study in which he tutors.

Anybody who needs a private tutor should use Premier!!!! The team really makes you feel like you're taken care of and the tutors are amazing. My daughter used one of their tutors for the SAT and she exceeded her target score. She had some remaining hours after the test so they matched us with a tutor for AP Physics and he was truly great. Very knowledgeable and professional and was able to answer any questions she had. I will continue to use premier tutoring throughout the rest of my daughter's education.

If you want the best of the best, Todd Frost is the tutor to hire. My sixteen year old son has been struggling with math since middle school. I have literally spent thousand of dollars on tutoring programs that didn't work. I wish I would have found Todd back then, but better late than never. Thanks to Todd, my son is now on track and feels more confident in his current Geometry class.

We hired Ed to provide Algebra II tutoring for our son Tim at the beginning of the 2015 school year. I can say that after a year working with Ed, Tim’s Algebra skills have improved significantly, and he has found a great friend and mentor in Ed. We will definitely be hiring Ed again this year to tutor our other sons! Overall, Ed is calm, good natured, knows how to handle teenagers, and is very knowledgeable in the field of mathematics. The best part is that Ed is a UCLA grad – LOVE that! I highly recommend him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
