FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
The day I decided to peruse magic as something more than a hobby, happens to be a very special day for myself. I was still in High School at the time, and many of my friends and neighbors knew that I did magic. On this special day there was a knock on the front door. It was a neighbor, and she was asking if I would like to come to her sons Birthday party and perform magic for 15 of his friends. Now I had lots of experience performing magic for close friends and relatives, never exceeding more than 6 people (outside of Christmas). This time it was for a room of total strangers and 15 children. Oh, and the party was starting in 4 hours! The only thing going through my mind was, I have a whole new audience to share my magic with! So I said yes. The magic was a big hit, and aside from using a makeshift magic table and having no prior experience, I received my first, unsolicited, paycheck. It was a modest amount, and yet I was so grateful to earn something on my own, by doing something that I love to do. Of course, thats not just why this day happens to be so special for me I was able take my own family out to dinner with what I had earned, for the first time.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
There was one evening where I was performing in front an audience at a large banquet hall. I admit, the audience was filled with magicians and their respective spouses and guests. On this faithful night, I too experienced real magic with the audience. I had prepared a very special piece of magic just for the occasion. For my first time, I was going to perform magic that was going to tell a story that was so compelling, I too, was scared of what the affect may be. The magic was about School Bullying. It was already an uncomfortable subject to talk about, and here I was about to perform this experimental magic. The magic itself was not flashy, nor designed to be a spectacle. It was only important that the magic merely accentuated all the right points. The story is told through poetry. At the end of the poem, the audience learns the unfortunate demise of school bullying. The audience was so quiet I could hear a pin drop. Then suddenly a roar of applause. Now, the magic for me happened after my performance. I met a woman who asked, Can I give you a hug? As she embraced me, she told me that she was a school teacher, and was so grateful that I was incorporating such a profound message with my magic. When she stepped away, I saw that her mascara was now running. I discovered the true power of my art, and thats when I learned what magic is for the magician. It was quite an evening filled with pride.
