Introduction: Curiously enough, many of my competitors are also my friends. When I created Paradox Magic I knew somehow I had to make it different from the rest. Big mistake… I realized trying to be different only offered me what I was not to be. The success of Paradox Magic relies on providing our clients with a whole different class of magic, Theatrical Magic. In my performances, you aren’t just witnessing baffling magic, but you are meeting characters from my show. I can guarantee you there are very few magicians who do what I do, and even fewer who can accomplish what I do, in the way I do it. This is Paradox Magic. The same reason why people become teachers is the same for why I do magic. I, too, stand before a group of people, who are all willing to take a leap of faith and to learn and see the world in a whole new perspective. I have passion for what I do and sharing my magic is the greatest gift. At least once a month, Paradox Magic, donates a show to a charity organization. These organizations cater to many different people, in many different situations. From domestic violence, those with learning disabilities, veterans, minority groups. In many ways, I can relate to those who have had to struggle in life. It has taught me to be grateful, and is something my character Nicolai Bayne reminds us all. I am so grateful to meet such a diverse group of people. “When you give… others will give back.” “David, Thank you so much for all the great energy and patience you brought to this event. You were MARVELOUS!! I say that because of the comments I kept hearing from people… I saw the attention that people were giving you and I couldn't imagine the party as successful without you. Thank you so much for being part of this occasion when so many other fun things were going on. Thank you.” -Family Justice Center “If preparedness is the key to success, David can certainly expect to be successful based on his preparedness the night of the performance. David introduced us to several different characters during the evening, all of whom dazzled us with feats of magic and illusion. Each of the themes resonated with the audience members in their own particular way. Magic, illusion and food for thought, all in one generous serving. And the residents of Walden House loved every minute of it.” -Walden House “"Impossible is not a word" is the phrase that greeted the eager room at Edgewood Center for Children and Families this fine October morning. In this instant we had all entered David Miller's World of Paradox. David, with his elfish energy and gleaming smile worked the stage and the audience masterfully and with such love for his craft that one could not help but be transported to a hopeful and happy place. His creative blend of traditional magic and uniquely nuanced performance art was nothing short of thrilling for the gap-mouthed children before him. What is most remarkable about David however is the way in which he seamlessly transforms from one clever guise to another. In one moment his mad scientist persona baffled us with clever games. In the next, we were treated to the clever tricks of Spellvin, David's innocent prankster. It was clear to me that in the minds eye of many of the children watching, these characters were different people entirely. And that even the most hardened of us, perhaps despite ourselves, had landed safely and magically in the World of Paradox”. -Bread and Roses

Magician

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

The day I decided to peruse magic as something more than a hobby, happens to be a very special day for myself. I was still in High School at the time, and many of my friends and neighbors knew that I did magic. On this special day there was a knock on the front door. It was a neighbor, and she was asking if I would like to come to her sons’ Birthday party and perform magic for 15 of his friends. Now I had lots of experience performing magic for close friends and relatives, never exceeding more than 6 people (outside of Christmas). This time it was for a room of “total strangers”… and 15 children. Oh, and the party was starting in 4 hours! The only thing going through my mind was, “I have a whole new audience to share my magic with!” So I said yes. The magic was a big hit, and aside from using a makeshift “magic table” and having no prior experience, I received my first, unsolicited, paycheck. It was a modest amount, and yet I was so grateful to earn something on my own, by doing something that I love to do. Of course, that’s not just why this day happens to be so special for me… I was able take my own family out to dinner with what I had earned, for the first time.

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

There was one evening where I was performing in front an audience at a large banquet hall. I admit, the audience was filled with magicians and their respective spouses and guests. On this faithful night, I too experienced real magic with the audience. I had prepared a very special piece of magic just for the occasion. For my first time, I was going to perform magic that was going to tell a story that was so compelling, I too, was scared of what the affect may be. The magic was about School Bullying. It was already an uncomfortable subject to talk about, and here I was about to perform this experimental magic. The magic itself was not flashy, nor designed to be a spectacle. It was only important that the magic merely accentuated all the right points. The story is told through poetry. At the end of the poem, the audience learns the unfortunate demise of school bullying. The audience was so quiet I could hear a pin drop. Then suddenly a roar of applause. Now, the magic for me happened after my performance. I met a woman who asked, “Can I give you a hug?” As she embraced me, she told me that she was a school teacher, and was so grateful that I was incorporating such a profound message with my magic. When she stepped away, I saw that her mascara was now running. I discovered the true power of my art, and that’s when I learned what magic is for the magician. It was quite an evening filled with pride.
