Megan has been my personal shopper for the last 2 yrs, and thanks to her fashion knowledge, honesty, and an eye for flattering lines... My closet and look has improved dramatically! For example, she was my stylist for this weekend's gala, and I received more compliments than I ever have at an event... All this while being 4 months pregnant and I still haven't told anyone! She is amazing and fun to shop with... I highly recommend her for anyone wanting an amazing shopper and stylist... With an equally amazing personality!

Shelley is a terrific fashion consultant and stylist for men. She accompanied me clothes shopping one weekend. She has a terrific eye for fashion and an easy manner. She made the entire process fun and successful. Like most men, I loathe clothes shopping. Nevertheless, I finished our adventure with some great items and felt good about the whole experience. I will definitely hire her again.

Sana is a pleasure to work with and her photography is on point. Working with her feels like you're just hanging out with a friend because she keeps every situation at ease and comfortable. I was very impressed with the final images, her impromptu creativity on the spot and collaborative process. Needless to say, she gets the job done and I look forward to hiring her again for portrait, product and fashion photography.

It takes a unique combination of a warm and inviting personality, a strong fashion sense, incredible insight, and contagious inspiration to truly be a stylist. Without hesitation, I can say that Betina has it all! She has an outstanding ability to (re)-create an image that leaves one feeling confident, motivated, and full of life. From the first meeting, her insight and gentle persuasion was awe-inspiring. She has your best interest at heart with her finger on the pulse of fashion. But, her personality steals the show. From her optimism to her compassion, she is, in every sense of the word, a BFF.

I had a wardrobe consultation session with Carrie as well as a shopping trip. Both times with Carrie was amazing. She was very thorough and direct helping me organize my closet. She immediately understood my taste and put different looks together. Then we went on a shopping trip. She pulled more than 70 pieces for me and we picked the best ones together. I loved that we focused on finding timeless, signature pieces and I get a lot of compliments on those. I am a picky person when it comes down to fashion, there are certain brands I like and Carrie was an expert in them. After our trip, we continue to collaborate on my lookbook online. It is an excellent experience. I highly recommend Carrie.

I really enjoyed working with Jodie. She knew exactly the right types and quality of clothes that worked best for my body type. I really (really) dislike shopping for clothes and she made the whole process very easy. She is very knowledgeable about fashion and her enthusiasm really helped me over the bump to get an awesome outfit for a wedding that fit my personality perfectly. It took a lot for me to get some new outfits and no matter what, she did not give up on me…which is what I needed. Thanks for all of your help!!

My time is limited and spending hours scouring stores for “that dress” seemed a daunting and distasteful task. Jessica was not only helpful in identifying my style but was able to locate the perfect gown plus accessories that reflected my taste. It was perfect. Working with someone of Ms. Barr’s caliber is exactly what one wants in a professional stylist. I highly recommend her service, you will be delighted.

My experience with Yarilis was nothing short of magical. Before working with her, my fashion sense was that of a 13 year old boy - not very impressive, professional, or inspired. She empowered me to release the wardrobe items that were not serving me in order to create the literal and emotional space for a look that really expresses my authenticity. After purging my uninspired closet, she took the pieces that had merit and transformed them into cohesive, professional, confidence-boosting looks. We went shopping for a few additions that took my look from pre-adolescent boy, to empowered, stylish adult. I couldn't be happier with the transformation that occurred. Thank you, Yarilis!

A++ ~ Would totally hire again! Jessie is an amazing closet cleanser / fashion advisor! After a year of personal shopping she did for me through an online service I asked if I could get help with a closet cleanse / consult. She was a blast to hang with and go through my closet with, we were laughing the whole time while choosing tons of old clothes to get rid of that didn't really fit my life anymore and I came away with a much better sense of the stuff I was missing the whole time.

Rheannia is one of those people that helps you see something new in yourself. She has helped me many times to break out of the same ol' fashion routine in ways that fit my taste and lifestyle, but that I never would have picked for myself without some help! Working with her is so empowering!

I really needed a clothing update and Nicole did a fabulous job. She put together great outfits for work and play that I love and that fit. Everything was stylish and fashionable and received rave reviews from friends and coworkers. Even my husband thought every outfit was a hit. It was so easy working with her and everything she selected was perfect for me. She made my ‘shopping’ experience fun and easy. I feel like I even learned about fashion and styling by how she pulled everything together from clothes to shoes to accessories. I can’t wait to start shopping with her again for next season.

    About

Few style consultants do it all, from color analysis and make-up through to wardrobe consulting and closet evaluation and all the way through personal shopping and accessory design and coordination. I'm also a visual artist and at the top of the field in terms of color knowledge. Author of 2 books on style. I love the language of color as a vehicle for self-expression. I also love to problem solve, and wardrobing is full of challenges. It is great to take the time to really get to know a client and their needs so I can help. Knowing how to bring out your beauty and deal with the overwhelm of shopping is a challenge and being able to be of assistance is very rewarding.

If you need an overhaul of your wardrobe or a few special, key pieces- Marcie Montgomery Styling is perfect for you. I am a stylist with a love for helping others feel their best. My pricing is reasonable, and I can create custom packages to accommodate your budget. I will join you in your home to help you sort through your clothes, weed through what is needed and not needed, and then shop with you to create the newly polished, confident you! Below are a few testimonials of my work: "Marcie is my dear peer who I have known for a decade. I have always admired her sense of design and style. Marcie keeps abreast of current cultural trends and is in tune with the lifestyles of both career women and mothers who work within the home. Marcie came to my rescue when I was 4 months pregnant, and I had no idea how to integrate maternity clothes into the work place. Marcie helped me select a new wardrobe that would take me through my entire pregnancy. We had a wonderful time shopping together. Marcie has a rare talent for helping people rediscover themselves. Marcie showed me how I could look, both professional and fashionable, while pregnant, which was not an easy task. Thank you, Marcie!" - Hollace B. "After being a stay-at-home mom for 9 years, the thought of trying to put together a new work wardrobe for my re-entry into the workforce (a conservative law firm environment) was overwhelming. What remained of my old work clothes was out of fashion, and I needed to be on a budget. I have never used a wardrobe consultant and was uncertain about the idea. But Marcie's help and advice ended up being invaluable, and I am so glad that I hired her. We started by meeting at my house to go through my clothes to figure out what might work. Marcie had a great eye for combining pieces I never would have thought of, and making a wish list of pieces that would work with what I already had (This also made the shopping process more streamlined because by that time, we had a definite idea of what we were looking for). Marcie also expertly noted which pieces needed to go bye-bye (I think when we have some pieces long enough, it's easy to lose perspective as to whether they are actually still cute, so I appreciated Marcie's input and feel so much better cleaning out the unworkable pieces). By the time Marcie left my house, she had lined up 5 outfits for my first week at work; I never would have come up with one and felt so relieved. Our second get-together was a shopping trip, which proved to be extremely productive and fun (Not stressful, as I was fearing!). Marcie is so fun and good at what she does, it felt like I was shopping with a friend, but also getting a lot done. By the end of that day, I went home with almost the full wish list done and a collection of mix-and-match pieces (pant suits, dresses, blouses, shoes, belts, and coats) that are perfect for my job. I've now been working for almost 2 months, and I cannot express how grateful I am each morning when choosing an outfit is easy and quick and I feel put together everyday. I would enthusiastically recommend Marcie's help whether for work or casual clothes. She has a great fashion sense and is a pleasure to work with!" - Suzy D. "Marcie Montgomery was an amazing help in recreating the new me after a major life change. I was approaching my 60th birthday, had recently ended a 35-year marriage, lost 25 pounds quite effortlessly, and was stepping into a whole new existence. Marcie had seen me through many days of change and this retail day was no exception to her caring and creativity. Nothing in my closet fit, defined me, or spoke of who I was now. In the usual way that we get on in life, a quick talk, a date made, budget checked, we were off to the retail playground with excitement and camaraderie. We chose new sizes, smaller, tailored a whole line with names and numbers that would fit in the future, if needed. Basics in seasonal colors that enjoyed compliments of scarves, sweaters, cosmetics and jewelry. We experimented with styles that were new, current and me. Styles that gave creative vision to a slender, active, new-age woman. More than picking and choosing the new fashion for me, Marcie taught me how to shop. She did it in a way that was celebratory and within my budget. How great was that? I got daily compliments at work and in life. I felt great. I realize now that her help allowed me to explore a part of my femininity that had never been actualized. Thank you, Marcie. Can we go again?" - Heidi S.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

    What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

    What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.
