I took two one-on-one makeup classes with Mayra over the past few years and loved both. I enjoyed chatting with her and learning about her profession, and she was very skilled in makeup application and instruction for Asian complexions and Asian eyes. I am tan Chinese with asymmetrical eyelids (sounds weird, I know), so I wanted to learn makeup application and foundation matching. I'd always wanted her to do my hair and makeup, but had no occasion for it until my sister's wedding. I booked an appointment with her a few months in advance for the morning of the wedding. I explained that I had to drive out to the venue and when I had to leave her studio, so she knew when to schedule my appointment and have me ready and out the door. We started promptly and she had me ready to go at the time she promised. There was no hassle and everything went smoothly from start to finish. My hair and makeup turned out beautifully! I brought the bridesmaid dress I would be wearing for the ceremony and speeches as well as the dress I would change into for the reception, and Mayra made sure that the look would match both the sparkly sequined floor length dress and the more demure, dark blue lace overlay dress. She was able to work with my long, straight, flat hair and create volume and a stylish bun. The overall makeup application was relatively quick and I could tell Mayra had an expert eye gained from years in the profession. She explained how the foundation would look over the course of photos, ceremony, and reception, how I would only have to powder once but everything else would not need to be touched up, and how the makeup look would coordinate with both dresses and look fabulous. She also explained what color lipstick to use if the lipstick she applied on me wore off over the evening. Throughout the almost hour and a half appointment, she was very patient, easy going, and pleasant to chat with, whether about weddings, makeup, or skincare. I had a very pleasant experience. Everything Tiffany told me was spot on - I only had to powder once, my makeup did not smear in the heat and sweat (even though other bridesmaids' did), and the hair and makeup looked wonderful with both outfits. So far I have not seen the official wedding photos but all the photos taken of me on iPhones have looked so beautiful and flawless, yet I looked very much like me and not overdone. I got so many compliments over the day and evening, and she made me so beautiful for such a special event. I highly recommend taking her makeup classes and booking her for future appointments. She won't disappoint - she is very professional and has years of industry expertise to back up the price tag.

I loved working with Chantelle! She taught me how to use the makeup I already have in much more flattering ways for my coloring, and she gave me some great suggestions for some new products and ideas to try. I would highly recommend working with Chantelle for any makeup needs you have!

I trained with Cassandra at her makeup academy to become certified in HD Makeup because I didn't have enough money to attend a regular school and I'm so happy with my choice. She's a real teacher at Blush School of Makeup so I trusted she would teach me everything there is to know about makeup. She even went out of her way to help me learn more about basic and bridal makeup. She taught me the fundamentals to build my portfolio and website too, which has helped me with booking amazing jobs. I like that Cassandra was flexible with my crazy schedule. The best part? I received a letter of recommendation and master certificate for my hours of training at the academy. Thank you, Cassandra!

Susan has been doing it ALL of me for the past couple of years. From makeup, to ombré, to extensions, I only trust her. I finally decided to try hair extensions and it was amazing! Susan blended them perfectly and everyone just thought my hair had grown longer. When I looked at the before and after pictures, I was left wondering why nobody told me that my hair was extremely choppy. But the hair extensions fixed that right up! I'll be getting hair extensions again soon. Nothing compares to the fullness of having the hair extensions in! They are very easy to style, make your hair much more voluminous, and of course they add length. You won't regret having Susan take care of any of your hair and makeup needs!

Janessa was so wonderful! She did my hair and makeup for my baby shower. She was very competitively priced while maintaining a high quality job, was very flexible, always responded quickly, answered my many questions, was very friendly and ready for me even when I showed up a little early! I would highly recommend her and I will go to her again in the future! She even did my hair when I initially just wanted makeup done. I got to many compliments through out the day! My hair and makeup was still looking great by the end of the night, I didn't want to wash it off!

This was my first experience with Thumbtack, I must say they did an awesome job with this referral. Janill is truly incredible, informative and an expert with her craft. She very professional; I loved my makeover. She taught me how to use my makeup brushes, what types of eye shades works with hooded eyes, contouring and how to create my missing eyebrows. Her knowledge of makeup application was superb. I can't wait to schedule my next advance color class with her. I highly recommend her service. Thanks Janill

Kristine, of Makeup Mobile, is awesome to work with! She is an amazing makeup artists and knows how to enhance a person's natural beauty and make them look dramatic but not overdone. For those nights or days when you just need to look glam without the effort, call Makeup Mobile! She can even offer a personal class on how to do your makeup. I prefer her live training over trying to watch a very layer video that's hard to follow. Keep it simple - let her come to you.

Céci is amazing!! This past Saturday I took a 1 hour class on makeup application from her. She seriously changed my world. I can now apply makeup with ease, and do it right. She taught me the proper application for my face, eyes and lips. Its amazing how a little blush or bronzer in exactly the right spot makes such a huge difference. I can do an every day look and a dramatic look that is just perfect. She taught me how to use the color pallets that I have, and recommended a few things that I should purchase to complete my makeup collection. I would recommend her to the occasional makeup wearer, and to the every day wearer because I guarantee she will teach you how to enhance your beauty with tips and instruction that will make you feel great. Thank you Céci for taking your time with me and being super sweet. I will be seeing you soon.

Megan and Paola did an amazing job! They taught our group of 18 girls (13-14 yrs old) and kept their attention for two hours. The girls had a fantastic time and left the class knowing how to properly care for their skin and how to apply makeup that is suitable for their age. I would highly recommend Megan and Paola!!

Tracey has provided professional makeup and skin care services for me ( and my friends) on more than one occasion. I was thrilled with the make up she did for me for my high school reunion. She showed up early to get me ready and set up her equipment and styling tools. Tracey explained different options for make up and also suggested skin care for my type of skin. She also styled my hair and I looked and felt stunning for my class reunion! I plan on hiring her again for my next special event.

I had such a blast doing a personal makeup class with Amy! She’s extremely knowledgeable and personable and I feel so much more confident with my makeup skills now. We went through all of my makeup and brushes and she helped me to understand how to use them and where I had gaps. Then we practiced two looks where she did one side of my face and I did the other. Would definitely recommend to anyone!!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

          • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
          • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
          • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
          • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
          • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
          • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
          • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
          • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

          • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
          • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
          • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
          • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
          • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
